Triggering her powers

His grip on her tightened even more as he inhaled her scent and willed his own heart to believe the words—that everything would be fine. Her cries subsided a few minutes later, and she slowly went limp in his arms. He pulled her onto his lap as he sat back down to face Rylan, his arms still holding her protectively against him.

She had fallen asleep. He looked down at her flushed face and damp, long lashes that cast shadows over her red cheeks. He raised his hand and delicately wiped away the wetness on her cheeks, letting his fingers linger on her small nose as he traced his finger over it slowly, as if trying to memorize the shape and every perfect mold that made her features. He cradled her head against his chest and looked at Rylan, who was staring at him quietly.
