The Reason Why

Katherine bit her lower lip, the pressure of her teeth grounding her as she stared blankly ahead. Her fingers fidgeted in her lap, twisting the edge of her blouse. She sat quietly in the front passenger seat of Felix's sleek black sedan, the leather interior somehow feeling too stiff against her skin this afternoon.

Felix cast a glance at her as he turned the steering wheel, navigating the quiet road leading to the kindergarten.

"You're too distracted to drive. I'm not letting you go alone while you're like this." That's what Felix said earlier.

Katherine didn't argue with him. She had simply followed him when he took the keys from her hand earlier and told her to get in the car. Now she sat beside him, her gaze flickering between the road ahead and the passing trees outside the window.

Her heart hadn't stopped racing since she got the call from the school.
