The two wasted no time.
Jesse began to run towards the wall with the suits with Kaori following his lead. She kept a close eye on what he was doing, copying him quickly.
First unzip the front, from the collar to the naval. Step inside, no need to undress, then zip back up. Step into the boots, strap them tight, then put on the gloves and strap them too. Lastly the helmet is as simple as twisting and locking. Luckily her backpack fit comfortably too.
"Push this button here," he pushed a small green button on his left breast bone, causing the suit to light up.
Kaori did the same.
She got slightly startled when a voice immediately began to talk to her. "Hello, Kaori," an AI voice began, "your oxygen level is 80%, and no damage detected. Your vitals are unsteady, and a possible infection is detected, shall I alert home?" It asked, as the oxygen level appeared only to her on the upper right of her helmet.
"No, no, it's alright," she whispered, hoping Jesse didn't hear anything.
"Okay, Kaori. There are also a few new anomalies detected, shall I display those upon your helmet?"
"Sure." Then she saw in the bottom left, her level, 6, and current experience points. Then to her bottom right was the number of memory shards and essences' she currently possessed; 1 and 0 respectively. "Thank you."
"My pleasure. Please be safe, Kaori."
As if their luck couldn't get worse, the community ship they were on suddenly shifted before the ship's AI let out a warning. It was letting all occupants know that the ship's power was near empty, and to begin evacuation protocols immediately.
Following the announcement, the sound of every door opening echoed the halls.
Including theirs.
Jesse began to panic. "Get to the ship!" He yelled at Kaori, as he darted towards the small console near their door that had shot open.
Doing as he told, she took off towards bay 2. Underneath the ship was a set of stairs that was down, leading up into the belly of the ship. Kaori felt helpless as she watched Jesse stumble to the keypad in his heavy suit.
By the time he reached it, the sickening sounds of a rapidly growing herd of zombies were getting louder; they were already heading straight for them.
"Warning, warning," an alarm began to sound throughout the ship, "directing all possible power to Bay 2 of the Captain's Floor in 5 minutes. Current power status will result in complete failure. Please proceed with caution."
The space cowboy then took off towards their escape ship, with Kaori making her way inside, but stopping just at the top waiting for him; scared. She was unable to see anything due to a small maze of shipment boxes. And on top of it, the doors surrounding their bay opened upon the warning finishing; the power being directed towards them keeping their ship from dropping.
The herd of zombies, while slow, were quickly catching up with Jesse due to the weight of his suit and the slight pull of space, and he could feel his heart begin to pound.
Their snarls were deafening; their hunger undeniable.
He pushed himself harder, before getting to the stairs.
Upon seeing Kaori at the top, he screamed at her to type in the code on the console at the wall to her left.
"0378." She said to herself as she typed it in with her fat, gloved finger. He then quickly guided her through the menu until she successfully triggered the stairs to begin to lift up, just before the zombies had a chance to get onto them.
Upon passing her, he hit a button on the center of her chest, triggering a blade to shoot out from each fist; he heavily suspected there were stragglers on board.
And he was right.
Luckily for them, but saddening to witness, it was obvious the ones who had tried to escape hadn't gotten far, nor had there been many to begin with. The door to the belly was still sealed, no signs of being opened.
There were 5 normal zombies and a crawler; or a zombie that just can't stand so they have to drag themselves around.
Jesse took the lead once more with Kaori following suit; the both of them together killing the 6 undead swiftly, while unwillingly painting their suits red. Kaori had killed 3 and received 15 experience points; the information entering her memory like a computer.
When they made it to the heavy, metallic belly door, Jesse typed in the code to unlock it. It only took a second for it to begin to open, letting off a refreshing pop as it opened horizontally out towards them.
Leaving no time for it to open all the way, they squeezed themselves inside, and shut it, locking it. Unfortunately, the ship was dimmed, using only minimal power despite being powered fully.
They then made their way through the cockpit employees only door that was immediately to their right upon entering, which lead directly to the where Jesse would hopefully be able to start their only way at escaping.
It was quite a climb in heavy suits, and by the time they reached the room, locking themselves inside, they could hear the AI of the community ship inform that there were only 2 minutes left before complete failure.
Jesse rushed to a large control board in the center of the room, his heavy boots dragging against the floor with each step. He was rightfully gasping for air by the time he reached it, but managed to click a few buttons upon it without error. The combination worked, initiating the power to turn on throughout the entire RV ship; the first time Kaori has seen a fully lit room in what felt like forever, and she had to squint to shield her eyes for a second.
Upon the power turning on, the whizzing of electronics filled the room, and a high-backed, leather cushioned chair emerged from the floor for Jesse, while a steering wheel emerged from the console; the board simply shifting to allow it to come out.
However, with the internal power turning on, it also made the outer lights to power on as well, revealing a sight that almost caused Kaori to die of fright; they were illuminating the large room that was now filling with a horde of thousands of zombies, all of them heading towards them in an attempt to climb the RV.
Jesse pushed a few buttons, causing another chair to emerge from the floor next to him, and he instructed her to strap herself in.
"1 minute left." The AI voice began to count each second down from 60.
Kaori ran to her own high-backed chair and hastily buckled herself in; she felt like her heart was in her throat.
"Hold on, Princess," Jesse nervously said. "I had to focus power to be able to have an immediate exit, otherwise it would be a very loud exit. The only other thing running during its power focus are the ship's anchors. Though, the community ship wouldn't have enough power to restart itself after a hard focus; so, it's doomed to fail." He gulped, pushing a few buttons before a red, circular button upon the board began to blink red. "And we didn't have any time to waste."
"10 seconds." The ai voice announced loudly.
Jesse smashed the button with his daggered-fist, which opened the hatch underneath their ship while simultaneously powering the engines in order to fly the moment they entered space.
Thousands of zombies began following their suit, though floating down slower compared to the RV's heavy drop.
Kaori watched as some of them popped, and others stopped just shy of it. Some of the zombies began to spin uncontrollably while others somehow remained in control and were trying to almost swim to them, but instead going nowhere other than where the vacuum of space wished them to go.
When she could hear the faint announcement of the timer hitting zero, she heard a loud explosion, before the community ship went completely quiet. Kaori could only assume the anchors had shut off, because it quickly began to plummet into Earth's orbit while slowly beginning to spin out of control.
Unfortunately for them, as they attempted to fly away, due to the much larger ship that dwarfed theirs, a part of it hit their RV hard. The blunt force quickly caused it to begin to spin as well, while simultaneously causing a warning to sound out that there was damage to their top anchor.
Kaori began to get sick as the ship spun, but Jesse remained calm and quickly regained control. He speedily switched the controls to full manual overdrive, and began steering it away from the large, devastating, out of control wreckage they were escaping from.
After only a few minutes of rough flying, she realized they were finally in the clear when Jesse evened them out and the flight became steady.
Kaori's sickness quickly went away, and once able to appreciate her surroundings, the ex-influencer's eyes locked onto their path; she was unable to look away.
It all felt fake as she watched them fly through the stars, while thousands of distant ships of all sizes floated in place just outside of Earth's orbit; all waiting for the end of the apocalypse.
She then heard the faint sounds of Jesse switching the ship into auto pilot upon giving the computer the coordinates of their destination; A 5-hour flight away.
As she sat in her seat, strapped in waiting for his command, he silently unbuckled himself before hopping to his feet and immediately removing his suit.
The cowboy then turned to her, "you're not my Kaori, are you?"
