The next few days passed quietly, but the tension hung in the air like an invisible weight. Alex had taken extra precautions, doubling the security around the mansion and at his office. Even though Isabella tried to focus on her daily routines, the knowledge that Ethan was back in Tokyo gnawed at her, a constant reminder of the danger that loomed over them.
Alex, however, remained a steady presence by her side, reassuring her with his strength and determination. Every evening, they spent time together at home, enjoying quiet moments of peace amidst the chaos that had defined their lives for so long.
One afternoon, while Alex was out handling business matters, Isabella found herself wandering through the garden outside the mansion. The air was crisp, and the late afternoon sun bathed the flowers in a warm, golden glow. She paused near the fountain, letting the soothing sound of water calm her restless mind.
As she stood there, lost in thought, Mrs. Grey approached her from behind, a gentle smile on her face.
"Enjoying the fresh air?" Mrs. Zhou asked, her tone kind.
Isabella nodded, turning to face her. "It helps clear my head."
Mrs. Grey joined her by the fountain, her gaze softening as she looked at the garden. "This place has always been my sanctuary. Whenever I needed to think, I would come here."
Isabella glanced at her, surprised by the candid admission. It wasn't often that Mrs. Grey opened up, especially not to her. But since the pregnancy, Isabella had noticed a change in Alex's mother—one that was both surprising and welcome.
"You've been through a lot, haven't you?" Mrs. Grey continued, her voice quieter now. "I can see it in your eyes."
Isabella hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Yes, I have. But I think we all have, in our own ways."
Mrs. Zhou smiled faintly. "That's true. Life has a way of testing us, doesn't it?"
Isabella didn't reply, but her thoughts were racing. She had often wondered what had caused the distance between Alex and his parents, especially his mother. They were a family with a powerful legacy, but there was an undercurrent of tension that ran deep beneath the surface.
"Can I ask you something?" Isabella finally said, her voice tentative.
Mrs. Grey looked at her with curiosity. "Of course."
"Why... why did you treat me the way you did when I first came here? I don't mean to bring up the past, but it's something I've been wondering about for a long time."
There was a moment of silence as Mrs. Grey seemed to weigh her response. Finally, she sighed, her expression softening even more.
"When Alex first brought you into our lives, I didn't know what to think," Mrs. Grey admitted. "You were so different from what I had imagined for him, and I feared you would be a distraction. My husband and I... we had plans for him, and those plans didn't include you."
Isabella bit her lip, unsure of how to respond. She had always sensed that Mrs. Grey had wanted something different for Alex, but hearing it spoken aloud still stung.
"But," Mrs. Grey continued, her gaze softening, "I was wrong. I can see that now. You've made Alex happy, and that's what matters most. I may not have shown it before, but I'm grateful for the way you've stood by him through everything."
Isabella blinked, taken aback by the admission. It wasn't exactly an apology, but it was as close as she had ever come to hearing one from Mrs. Grey.
"Thank you," Isabella said quietly. "That means a lot."
Mrs.Grey smiled warmly. "You're part of this family now, Isabella. And I want you to know that I'm here for you, too."
Before Isabella could respond, they heard the sound of the front gate opening. Alex's black SUV pulled into the driveway, and moments later, he stepped out of the car, his gaze immediately locking onto Isabella.
As he approached, Mrs. Grey gave her a knowing look. "I'll leave you two to talk."
Isabella smiled at her before turning to face Alex as he walked up to her. His expression was serious, but his eyes softened when he saw her.
"How was your day?" Alex asked, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her close.
"Quiet," she replied, resting her head against his chest. "I spent some time with your mom in the garden."
Alex raised an eyebrow, a look of surprise crossing his face. "Really?"
"Yeah," Isabella said with a small smile. "She was... surprisingly nice."
Alex chuckled, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "I told you she's warming up to you."
Isabella nodded, but her thoughts quickly shifted back to the underlying tension in their lives. "Have you heard anything about Ethan?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Alex's body tensed slightly, but he kept his tone calm. "Not yet. My men are still looking for him, but I don't want you to worry. I've made sure there's extra security around the mansion."
Isabella nodded, trying to push the anxiety away. "I trust you."
"I know," Alex said softly. "And I won't let anything happen to you or our baby."
They stood there for a while, holding each other in the fading light, finding solace in each other's presence. No matter what challenges lay ahead, they knew they would face them together.
Later that evening, after dinner, Alex and Isabella retreated to their room. The night was calm, but the weight of everything that had happened still lingered in the back of Isabella's mind. She sat on the bed, absentmindedly rubbing her belly as Alex changed out of his suit.
"You're thinking about something," Alex said as he walked over to her, sitting down beside her on the bed.
Isabella glanced up at him, giving a small smile. "I'm just... trying to wrap my head around everything. Your mom, Ethan, the baby... it's a lot."
Alex took her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers. "I know. But we'll get through this. Together."
She nodded, leaning her head on his shoulder. "I believe you. It's just hard sometimes."
"I know it is," Alex said softly, kissing the top of her head. "But I promise you, Isabella, everything will be okay."
They sat in silence for a while, the warmth of their connection providing comfort amidst the uncertainty. As long as they had each other, they could face whatever storm was coming.
Isabella looked up at Alex, her heart swelling with love and gratitude. No matter how complicated their journey had been, she knew one thing for certain: she was exactly where she was meant to be.
