Chapter 3: Please run for office

Harvard Law School, located on the high ground on the north bank of the Charles River, is the oldest law school in the United States. Although it was founded nearly two hundred years after Harvard itself, it has relied on Harvard's rich heritage to rapidly rise to become one of the most authoritative law schools in the United States in the past two hundred years. It has also trained many American presidents, perhaps not the most in number, but definitely the most well-known.

A black Buick sedan crossed the Anderson Memorial Bridge to the main Harvard campus on the north bank of the Charles River. Zhou Ming was sitting in the car with Ye Ning and Alan.

May is the time when the birds are singing and the grass is growing at Harvard University, and the roads are lined with thriving greenery. However, Ming Zhou is obviously not here for sightseeing, and in fact there is no need for him to study here, so his car speeds down Harvard's main road, directly up to the Law School's highlands, past the statue of Joseph that stands tall at the entrance, and arrives in front of the Law School's library building.

'I graduated from Harvard Law School, and I know that the usual extracurricular activities of Harvard Law School students in their spare time is to come to the library to read. You know, there are so many strange and weird legal provisions in the United States, and there is no other way except to memorise them by heart. Here, the more outstanding the student, the more they will definitely study hard. Since Omar is the first black president of the Law Review, I think he will only work harder than others, and I guess he will be here.' Alan told Zhou Ming his thoughts.

'I have full confidence in Lawyer Alan's judgment.'

Zhou Ming nodded and then got off the car with Ye Ning. Ye Ning looked up at the magnificent Greek-style colonnaded building in front of her and asked Alan, 'Lawyer Alan, the library is so big, how are we going to find it?'

'Everyone entering and leaving the library must register at the guard's office at the entrance. Of course, there are some bad students who maliciously try to avoid it, but most of them are night owls who want to stay up all night reading. Some of the guards are also willing to turn a blind eye, but during the day I believe the guards will still not let any little mouse who wants to sneak in, and there is no need for that either,' said Alan.

'So you mean we just have to go to the guard and check?' asked Ming.

Alan nodded and replied yes, and then they walked towards the guard room. Ye Ning wanted to go up and ask, but Alan stopped her. He said, 'I'm sorry, you can't do that. The guys at the law school are a bunch of arrogant idiots. Although you are very pretty, I think they will still refuse to disclose any information because you are Chinese, so I will do it.'

Ye Ning was very angry at Alan's words, but sometimes that was just the way reality was. Wasn't that why Zhou Ming wanted to master politics?

'Mr. Zhou Ming, the guard just told me that since it's a holiday today, Omar came in very early today. We now have two options: the first is to go straight to the library to find him, and the second is to wait at the door...'

Before Alan could finish, Zhou Ming gave his answer: 'Let's go straight in and find him. I'm not Mr. Wharton. Waiting outside for him isn't my style.'

Alan was not surprised by Zhou Ming's choice, but today seemed to be their lucky day. As soon as they walked into the library building, before they could split up to look for people, they saw a tall black man walking towards them with a few books in his arms.

As a member of the special forces, ** instinctively recognised him first and whispered to Zhou Ming that it was Omar.

In fact, for Zhou Ming, there was no need for **'s reminder. Zhou Ming had already recognised that person. After all, in the future, as the President of the United States in the era of the most explosive information, Omar was a re-elected president and also the first black president. As long as you go online, there is no one who does not know him. And twenty-five years ago, although Omar was much younger and had a short, curly and explosive hair, his unique face still made Zhou Ming recognise him at first glance.

Zhou Ming nodded to** them and then took the initiative to go up to Omar and stop him.

Zhou Ming stood in front of Omar and looked up and down at the other person: so this is the future President of the United States? He looks quite tall, is it the racial advantage of being mixed black and white?

This was the first thought in Zhou Ming's mind. Originally, Zhou Ming thought that he would be very excited when he met Obama, just as he was when he first met Yang Lao and the President of Northern Russia, Nikolai. But in fact, Zhou Ming's heart was very calm. Apart from being a little surprised by Obama's height, Zhou Ming suddenly remembered that the reported height of Obama was 185 cm.

Zhou Ming was able to remain calm because, on the one hand, he had experienced so many things and had met two heads of state and legendary figures, which had made him a lot stronger mentally; and on the other hand, he had once held Omar in high esteem and had had high expectations of him, so naturally he felt a little disappointed when he met the real person.

Zhou Ming was calm on the one hand, but Omar was shocked on the other. He looked at Zhou Ming, who had suddenly appeared in front of him, and asked, 'I'm sorry, classmate, but I have some things to do back there. If you need to talk to me about something, can we finish quickly?'

Zhou Ming came back to his senses and said to Omar, 'Hello, classmate Omar. I do have something very important to discuss with you. Of course, before I do, let me introduce myself. My name is Zhou Ming, and I am the CEO of Wharton Insurance.'

'I'm sorry, I don't need any insurance right now, but you can leave me your business card, and if I need it in the future, I'll contact you. Is that okay?' Omar asked.

Zhou Ming felt very helpless to be treated as an insurance salesman. But Omar, didn't you pay attention when you introduced yourself just now? Have you ever seen an insurance company where the CEO personally goes to the campus to sell insurance?

Although he was thinking this, Zhou Ming still said, 'Omar, I'm sorry, I'm not here to sell insurance. I'm asking you to be my elector.'

'Elector?' Omar was stunned, and it was obvious that Zhou Ming's big jump made him unable to react for a while.

Zhou Ming nodded and said, "That's right. My insurance company recently established an election foundation, which is going to nominate and fund an elector to run in this election during the community or district election process.'

'So you chose me?" Omar asked in a daze. 'But I don't understand why you chose me.'

Because I know you are the future President of the United States. If you can even elect the President, what election can you not pass?

This was Zhou Ming's biggest reason, but it was too shocking to say, so in the end, Zhou Ming simply said, 'Because I have seen some of your work and your speech in the law review, and I really admire your dedication to the law and your eloquence when debating. But most importantly, I heard your vision for the future of politics, and I think these are very much in line with the qualifications of an elector.'

Omar had come back to his senses by now, but instead of speaking, he looked around at Zhou Ming and Ye Ning and Alan.

Seeing Omar's behaviour, Alan took the initiative to introduce himself: 'Hello, Omar. My name is Alan. I am a lawyer and a graduate of Harvard Law School. I think you may have heard of me. I now work at Gold Medal Law Firm as the legal advisor to Mr. Zhou Ming, providing him with the necessary legal services, and of course, providing him with the necessary guarantees at the same time, as in this case.'

Alan continued, 'Omar, I can assure you that Mr. Zhou Ming's election fund company is completely legal. You can sign a cooperation agreement with him, and then he can provide the necessary funds and other services for your campaign.'

'But you have to guarantee our interests!' Ye Ning added.

'Or you can say that you must guarantee to honour your campaign promises after your successful campaign,' Alan explained.

After Ye Ning and Alan, Zhou Ming asked, 'Do you understand what Omar is saying?'

Omar nodded and said, 'I think I understand very well, but I'm afraid I'll disappoint you, because I have no intention of running for office. If it were the president of the student union, I might consider it, but to talk about things like mayor or district chief, I'm sorry, I'm not interested. I have things to do back there, so please move aside. Thank you.'

Omar finished speaking and wanted to leave, but Zhou Ming didn't intend to move out of the way. He said, 'Classmate Omar, perhaps I haven't made myself clear enough. The cooperation I'm talking about in running for office won't cost you a single cent. In fact, I'll even pay you a salary. But what I need from you is for you to represent my election foundation in the campaign and honour your promise to me after you're elected.'

'I'm sorry, Zhou Ming, but I understand perfectly what you just said. On the contrary, it's you who doesn't understand what I mean!'

Omar said to Zhou Ming, word by word, 'I just want to say that I am not the least bit interested in running for office. I hate the government, I hate the parliament, I hate the tax bureau and the police even more, and I hate everything to do with politics, because politics is incredibly dirty. And I am a student at Harvard Law School, and my future goal is to remove all this filth and restore the law to its original state.

'And now you want me to join such a dirty government? This is shocking. I doubt you really know anything about me,' said Omar.

'But this is a very good opportunity. You have nothing to lose, and you will be paid a certain amount. You come from a single-parent family...'

Ye Ning desperately tried to make a last-ditch effort, but before she could finish her sentence, Omar interrupted her sharply. His eyes widened with anger as he looked at Ye Ning and said, 'I ask this lady to please watch her words. If you are here to attack me, then you have already achieved your goal, but I will never allow you to insult my father and mother in any way in front of me.'

Instead, Ye Ning was taken aback by Omar's words. She hurriedly explained, 'I'm sorry, Omar, I didn't mean to insult your parents. Maybe it's just my English...'

Omar still shook his head and said, 'I don't care what the problem is. I hate you all now. I don't want to say another word to you!'

'I just want to say one last thing to you: screw your election campaign and your bullshit foundation. I just want to be my own Omar. I'm not running for anything, I don't want to be anyone. Please don't come looking for me again. If I see any of you again, I'll definitely call the police!'

Omar left with those words, leaving the four Zhou Mings standing there, looking at each other.
