Chapter 25: This is the reason

May 15th was the day of the Fenway District Council elections, and it was also the day of the judge's hearing at the South Brighton District Court.

According to Massachusetts law, anyone who wants to become a judge must be approved by the council. It can be said that the council's hearing is equivalent to the election of a judge, and it is the most important step to becoming a judge.

Omar wanted to become a judge, so that morning he arrived early at the South Brighton District Council building, carrying a notebook and a pen with him.

Omar's hearing was at 11am. Before that, he sat in the council corridor, writing something in his notebook with his pen. Suddenly there was a tapping sound, and a man came up to him. Omar looked up and saw a tall, handsome white man, an acquaintance of his. Omar smiled and said to him, 'Kane, is your hearing next? Good luck.'

Kane also smiled at Omar: 'Of course I will have good luck. Although I didn't win against you at Harvard, this time is different. I will definitely become the new judge.'

Omar shrugged: 'Good luck to you then, but I think I will still do my best to win against you. After I become the new judge, I will buy you a burger, the kind with two beef patties.'

'Don't get too excited, wait until the hearing is over. You can keep that burger for yourself, otherwise I'm afraid you won't be able to eat it again.'

Kane left those words and walked into the hearing room first. Omar waited until 10:45. He closed his laptop. At 10:50, the staff of the parliament came out to prompt him to enter. Omar got up, tidied his clothes a bit, and then walked into the hearing room with his head held high and full of confidence.

The hearing venue was actually a small parliamentary hall with a podium and dozens of MPs sitting opposite to hear the testimony.

Kane walked down from the podium, passed Omar head-on, and said to him, 'I did pretty well. I hope my old opponent won't let me off just because he feels sorry for me.'

'Don't worry, I still have to buy you a two-patty cheeseburger, because I don't think you can afford it either,' Omar responded unceremoniously.

Kane then left the hall, and Omar walked up to the lectern. He took a deep breath and said, 'Hello, distinguished ladies and gentlemen. My name is Omar, and I am currently pursuing a doctorate at Harvard Law School. My dream is to become a judge and uphold the justice of the law and fairness of society with my own hands. Please believe that I will become a qualified judge!'

Omar's hearing lasted for a total of one hour. In addition to his own speech, he also had to face the inquiries and difficulties of all the members of parliament. However, Omar passed them all. When his final speech ended, there was even a burst of warm applause. This made Omar very happy, because he couldn't remember hearing applause after his hearing in Kane.

Omar walked out of the hall and saw Kane and said, 'It seems that I played better than you this time.'

Kane, however, smiled condescendingly and said, 'It's too early to tell until the results are announced. Maybe the results will be a surprise.'

The result of the hearing was announced a week later. Omar still arrived early at the South Brighton District Council building. He thought he would surely become a judge, but instead he was told that he had failed.

'I'm sorry, but we need an American who can guarantee loyalty to the law. You have excellent grades, but you are black, and it is difficult for us to guarantee that you will uphold the law fairly, especially in cases against blacks or cases with racial overtones. We need more time to keep track of your behaviour, so perhaps you should start by working as a court clerk.'

This was the answer Omar heard, and his eyes widened. 'Just because I'm black, you won't let me become a judge? Aren't you being racist?'

To Omar's words, the other person sneered and replied, 'That was the answer I gave you as a staff member of the council. Next is what I want to say to you as an individual. The law is not for niggers like you. You'd better go back to your slums and play with your drugs and violence! We won't allow God to allow you to become a judge!'

The words of the council staff member hit Omar like a heavy hammer, shattering his yearning for freedom and fairness.

No, this must be a conspiracy by those racists. I'll go and ask the speaker for clarification!

Omar thought, and then he hovered outside the door of the council chamber, trying to get in. But before he could think of a way to sneak in, he saw the speaker come out with Kane, which surprised Omar very much. He hid quietly on the side, and as a result, he heard the shocking news.

'Mr. Speaker, thank you very much this time. If it weren't for you, I'm afraid I wouldn't have been able to become a judge in Brighton,' said Kane.

The speaker waved his hand and said, "The thought of letting a nigger become a judge in our Brighton makes me sick. I don't know what the other urban districts think, but it is definitely not allowed in our South Brighton district!'

Then the speaker said, "But, Mr. Kane, I wonder how your father feels about supporting me in next year's mayoral election?'

Kane smiled and said, 'Of course it's no problem. Mr. Speaker, you know that my father has always hated those niggers. My father will be very concerned about my candidacy for judge this time. He knows that you are so principled, and I think he will be very happy. In fact, the reason I came to see you this time is that my father would like to invite you to have dinner together. Do you have time?'

The speaker also smiled and said, 'Of course I have time. This is a great honor.'

As Omar listened to their conversation, his fists clenched, his lungs about to explode. It was then that he realised what Kane had meant when he spoke to him before the hearing. He had colluded with the Speaker from the very beginning, just to target him.

But then Omar let go of his fists. Who made him a black man? Who made him a poor student at Harvard without a very rich father? Even his own biological father, the Kenyan student, had left because he hated his black lineage so much.

These questions made Omar very depressed, and his fists gradually loosened. He sat on the ground, staring blankly as Kane and the speaker left, laughing and joking. It was a long time before he emerged from the bushes where he had been hiding.

Omar walked back to Harvard Law School in a daze, but here he saw something else that made him feel miserable.

Outside the Abraham dormitory, a beautiful blonde was kissing a handsome white guy intimately without any sense of shame.

This would have been a very romantic and beautiful scene, but in Omar's eyes, it was so ugly and unbearable, because the blonde was his girlfriend, and the handsome white guy was named Kane.

'Why? Lucy, why did you betray me?' Omar ran over angrily and asked.

The cheating couple were taken aback by the sudden appearance of Omar. The woman called Lucy hid behind Kane at once, while Kane instinctively took a step back. However, when he saw that it was Omar, he stood up again. He looked up and down at Omar a few times and said, 'Omar is back? I'm sorry to tell you something. Lucy broke up with you, she is now my girlfriend.'

Omar ignored Kane completely. He just looked at Lucy angrily, gritted his teeth and said, 'Lucy, I want you to tell me that this isn't true.'

Lucy didn't answer Omar. It was still Kane who answered him, 'This is true, but I advise you not to ask why, because I'm afraid you won't be able to accept some bigger blows.'

'I want to know, you bastard, tell me quickly, did you cheat on Lucy!'

Omar said, taking two steps forward and grabbing Kane by the collar. He looked at him menacingly, and Kane was startled. Lucy subconsciously said at this time, 'Omar, what are you doing? Let go of me, or I'll call the police. You should know what the consequences are if you, as a black man, are arrested and taken to the police station!'

Omar froze at Lucy's words. Kane took this opportunity to push Omar to the ground with both hands. He pointed at Omar and cursed, 'What do you want, you black bastard? Do you want to go to the police station and get stabbed in the ass? I'll tell you, Lucy was originally my girlfriend. It was only for this judge's hearing that she was forced to be with you. Otherwise, do you think she would look at you with your disgusting appearance?'

Omar shook his head in disbelief, mumbling, 'No way, this can't be true, we were so good...'

As if he felt that wasn't enough of a blow to Omar, Kane continued, 'You think you were really that good? Let me tell you something else. Remember the first birthday you were together? That was the first time you slept together, but unfortunately you drank too much.'

Hearing Kane say this, Omar suddenly raised his head, as if he had thought of something very terrible.

Kane looked at Omar triumphantly and said, 'It seems you've guessed it. Yes, that day was when Lucy gave you the sleeping pills. Then on your birthday, in your room on the bed, I was right next to you, fucking your girlfriend hard. Can you understand that feeling? That feeling was really great. Niggas like you deserve to be treated like that. Haha!'

'No, that's not true. You're lying. Lucy would never betray me like that. You're lying!'

Omar shook his head desperately and said in pain, and in the end he yelled at Kane like a wounded beast.

'Believe it or not, you have lost everything, whether it's the judge's hearing or your girlfriend.'

Kane said, reached up Omar's head, looked at Omar's eyes and said, 'Remember what I told you at the last debate? No matter how you win, it's useless, because you can't change any facts except for satisfying your vanity. But I, whenever I want, can make you lose at any critical moment that changes life and destiny, and you can never recover.'

'For example, at the judge's hearing this time,' said Kane, "I learned about your hearing paper from Lucy. Referring to your thinking, it made me discover a lot of new problems, so I did very well this time. In that case, I have to say thank you to you.'

'You are a bastard!" Omar cursed with clenched teeth.

Kane said with a laugh, 'I like that name,' and then put his arm around Lucy's waist and left. Omar watched in pain as he saw Lucy turn to him one last time before leaving and say sorry.

'All liars! Any law about love and equality is a fucking lie!' Omar let out a painful wail.

...

'This is the reason I came here today, to claim my rights. I want to change this. I know you can help me,' Omar said to Zhou Ming, Chen Shuyu, Li Yang and the others.
