Ryan's POV
It was strange to me. Was something wrong with her? It just didn't make sense.
She kept on pointing her fingers at my eyes, calling them pale blue. Of course they were pale blue, but how did they relate to the new bond that was started in us?
For a while, I had felt that her reaction was part of the mate bonding process, but her continued walking away from me had made it seem otherwise. But she had kissed me, and everyone had cheered us up. What could be the problem with her? I had no idea.
I had found myself sitting on the floor without a care that everyone was looking at me, and someone from afar would have thought I was an art piece.
Allerio, the man who had come with me, made an effort to get me on my feet.
"Everyone is looking at you." He whispered into my ears. "You have to stand up!"
It was then I noticed that the ball had come to an end, but no one was leaving. The music that was being played in the hall had stopped, and even the musicians had joined in looking at me. I had given myself to feast their eyes on as another form of entertainment.
"Let's pretend that nothing has happened!" He urged on.
I managed to stay on my feet. "What was wrong with her?"
My eyes had become teary. As an alpha, I had to try to hold it in, but it kept pushing to come out.
"I can't tell."
I had asked him to stay some distance from me just so it wasn't known that he had come with me. I had wanted to feel alone.
"It's just a light case," he said.
A light case? I didn't believe that. What was light about my mate running away from me just after we kissed? It was not close to something easy to solve.
We were already leaving the hall.
"You can always look for her," he went on.
My head was already spinning, and I fixed my eyes on the girls that were still around with a false hope that one of them could be my mate
"She didn't tell me her name, and also behaved as though I stinked."
He didn't give up trying to make me feel better. That was impossible to do, but he felt I could feel better if I got some assurance that everything could always be put in place.
I kept mute all through the journey back to my pack. It was as though I was dreaming,
If it was a dream, the first part of it, the part where my mate had kissed me, appealed so much that I didn't consider waking up from it. But the second part had turned my heart apart.
"Ryan!" One of my mistresses, Celine, rushed to hug me.
I took a minute or two to stare at her. She was close in resemblance to my mate. Her golden hair and eye color had made it feel so, even her average height added to it.
I hugged her tightly as though I was hugging my mate, completely startling her. Something had gone loose in my head. The hug was mainly to aid my imagination that my mate was in my arms, but then, I got to my senses. She could never replicate the same strange feeling I felt from my mate.
It made me pull her away, and went straight to my room.
My second mistress, Priscilla, was lying on my bed. She was lying on it before I had left for the ball, and the way she was dressed showed that she had not left it since the time I left her.
"Ryan, you are back."
I was more intimate to her, to the extent I always poured out my deep emotions to her.
I went to the other side of the bed without speaking to her.
"Are you okay?" She asked.
I did not answer, and was facing the other side of the bed so she wasn't looking at my face.
"If you had a mate, you would not have to be in this state."
She brought up the same topic that had made me attend the mating ball.
"I could always become your mate." She rubbed her hands on my back. "You don't have to go looking for a true mate."
She had come up with her usual request, always looking for ways to make me hers by all means she could think of. Sometimes, it offset me, but I had become so used to it that I stopped bothering to make her stop spouting.
The fact was that I had a longing to find a mate. It would make me feel complete, I had thought.
"Everything would still be normal, and I would become your Luna, always staying by your side."
I got up from the bed as I was tired of listening to her.
"I have good news for you!"
That made me stop my attempt to turn the door knob.
"Good news?"
I was curious to know. Maybe it could cheer me up a bit.
"Yes." Her face lit up with a smile that was a good view to my eyes.
"Tell me about it."
"Could you make a guess?"
I was in the worst of mood, how was it possible for me to come up with a guess?
"Okay, I'm pregnant for you!"
My face changed in an instant, and the kind of expression she wanted to see on me couldn't show.
"What about my mate? What would happen to her?"
Her face twitched, looking at me as though I was one of the seven wonders of the world.
"Did you attend the mating ball?"
I didn't answer, instead, I got to the bed. The countenance of my face spoke out the answer to her.
"And you have kept it a secret from me!"
"I have just met my mate, what am I going to do about her?"
"You did not consider how I would feel if you tried to put me behind!"
My ears were deaf to her words, and what kept ringing in my head was "I am pregnant!".
"You do not cherish me after all!" She was hitting her hands against the bed as though the sheets had caused everything.
There was a rule among different packs that every alpha must follow. The first person to have a child for an alpha was always considered as a wife and Luna to him, even though they weren't mates.
Was that going to be the same fate for me? How would my mate co
pe with it?
Everything was happening too fast.
