The school courtyard was bathed in a warm, golden glow as the sun started to set. With their laughter and talk fading into the background, students started packing up and headed home. But Kai Smith trailed behind, his head a whirlwind of contradicting ideas. He was an underachiever before the "Top Student Genius System" changed his life and made him a genius in nearly every profession. But as he mastered each new ability, a growing uneasiness crept into his chest. What was he turning into? Was he only a vehicle for the abilities of the system, or was he still the Kai who had formerly had trouble solving basic math problems?
The girl who had supported him through thick and thin, Luna Williams, observed the shift in him. She had witnessed Kai's transformation from barely passing his classes to dominating every endeavor he undertook, including academics, athletics, and the arts. She had first been happy for him and proud of his achievements, but something didn't feel quite right. His grin had lost its brightness, and there seemed to be a difference in the glitter in his eyes. She couldn't get rid of the impression that he was keeping something significant from her.
Luna made the decision that she could no longer put off her worries. She went up to Kai as the last bell of the day sounded. He was sitting by himself on a seat beneath a big oak tree, gazing at the notes he was holding in his hands.
"Kai," she murmured, her voice containing a mixture of worry and resolve.
Kai snapped out of his reverie and glanced up. He tried to grin, but it stopped short of his eyes. "Hi, Luna. What's going on?"
Luna took a seat next to him and attempted to read his face with her sharp eyes. That's the question I had for you. What's the matter with you? You've changed so drastically lately, and I'm concerned.
A beat skipped by Kai's heart. Knowing that Luna would ultimately see the change in him, he had been dreading this talk. He was afraid of frightening her away, but he didn't know how to tell her the truth since he cared about her too much to lie.
"Luna, I…" He paused, trying to think of the proper phrase. "You know, I've just been so concentrated. attempting to improve oneself."
Luna trembled her head, a scowl on her forehead from displeasure. "Kai, no. It goes beyond that. It goes beyond simply "doing better." These days, you're nearly a genius at everything! You seem like a whole different person, and I'm not sure how that happened. Just be honest with me, please."
The terror Kai had been holding within for so long started to surface as he felt the weight of her words bearing down on him. He was no longer able to conceal this from her. She was entitled to the truth.
Breathing deeply, Kai met Luna's gaze as his voice faltered a little. Luna, there's something you should be aware of. I haven't disclosed anything to anyone."
Luna's eyes became wide with a mixture of fear and excitement. "What is it, Kai?"
He paused for just one more time before revealing the reality. "This system is to blame for it. I discovered an old book a few months ago, and when I opened it, I set off something known as the "Top Student Genius System." I can now study anything and become an expert in any skill I desire, thanks to it. That's how I've managed to do everything."
Luna was shocked as she looked at him, her thoughts racing over what he had just said. "A system? like a superpower of some sort?"
"A little bit," Kai said, his voice almost audible above a whisper. "You know, at first it seemed like a godsend. I got my chance to turn my life around at last. However, at this moment, I'm not really certain. As though the more I utilize it, the more my true identity eludes me. Luna, I'm afraid. I'm afraid I'm changing into a person I can no longer even recognize."
Luna's eyes filled with tears as she heard Kai's confession. She was able to see the weakness and fear he was desperately attempting to cover in his eyes. She was devastated to see him in such pain and to learn that he had been bearing this weight by himself.
She quietly whispered, "Kai," and reached out to hold his hand. "You remain who you are. You may have these abilities because of this system, whatever it may be, but it doesn't determine who you are. You remain the same diligent, compassionate, and kind person I have known my whole life. The Kai who assisted me, who cheered me up when I was down, and my schoolwork when I was having trouble. That is who you truly are.
Kai's palm tightened around hers as her words calmed the turbulence in his emotions. He felt a sensation of relaxation, as though a huge weight had been removed from his shoulders, for the first time in weeks. This was no longer just him in it.
He murmured, "Thank you, Luna," his voice full of love. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
Luna shot him a quick, comforting grin. "Kai, you don't have to do this by yourself. I'm always here to support you."
Kai became aware of how much Luna meant to him at that very moment. She was his anchor, the one person who saw him through, not just a buddy, even if he was blind to the truth about himself.
Kai and Luna sat silently, hand in hand, while the sun sank below the horizon, creating long shadows over the courtyard. Confusion and dread had preceded the encounter, but understanding and connection had won out in the end. And Kai realized that he wouldn't face the problems ahead by himself as they sat there and watched the sky change from gold to a deep purple.
