The battle intensified as the mecha moved with surprising agility, far faster than any of them had anticipated. The old laboratory floor shook under its massive metal legs, and its onboard weapons unleashed a hailstorm of heavy-caliber bullets. The sound of gunfire echoed throughout the room, filling the air with the screech of metal and the shattering of ancient concrete. Bullets ripped through the brittle walls, sending shards of debris flying and shattering the remaining glass of the old research facility.
Modeus quickly dove to the side, pressing himself against a large chunk of rubble for cover. His weapon, the Longstrike M-12, roared as he fired rounds specifically designed to pierce steel. His eyes locked onto the weak points Neumann, his Quantum AI, had highlighted on the mecha's body. Each shot was aimed at the vulnerable joints, but the mecha's incredible speed made it difficult to land accurate hits.
"Neumann, lock onto the weak points!" Modeus ordered, frustration creeping into his voice as the mecha's agile movements threw off his aim. Neumann responded instantly, adjusting Modeus's targeting system for more precise shots. One round hit the mecha's knee joint, causing a burst of sparks and a screech of metal grinding against metal. But the damage was short-lived. The mecha let out a loud, ominous hum, and the damaged area began to repair itself.
"It's repairing itself!" Modeus shouted to the others. "We need to find a way to stop its self-repair mechanism!"
On the other side of the room, Takashima had already deployed the powered shield from his back. With swift movements, he blocked the barrage of bullets fired by the mecha. His shield absorbed most of the impact, though each shot forced him back slightly with every hit. "I'll hold its fire! Take out its ranged weapons!" he shouted, keeping the shield firmly in position.
But Takashima wasn't just on defense. From behind his shield, he quickly pulled out the portable missile launcher he'd been carrying, locking onto the mecha as it advanced. "Marlene, cover me! I need a few more seconds!"
Marlene, positioned on the right, didn't hesitate. She immediately set up her automatic turret, activating it with practiced precision. Though small, the turret provided a steady stream of suppressive fire. The sharp crack of rapid gunfire filled the room as the turret sprayed bullets toward the mecha, forcing it to shift its movements slightly to evade the onslaught.
"Keep it off balance!" Marlene called out, adjusting her turret to maintain pressure. Meanwhile, her hands expertly prepared a grenade, ready to lob it when the opportunity presented itself.
Takashima seized the moment. With the mecha distracted by Marlene's turret fire, he launched two missiles from behind his shield. The projectiles streaked across the room and slammed into the mecha's torso with a deafening explosion. Chunks of its outer armor shattered, sending metal fragments flying in every direction.
But just like before, the mecha emitted that same eerie hum. The damaged pieces of metal began to shift and reassemble, regenerating right before their eyes. "Damn it! The repair system's too fast!" Takashima cursed, frustration evident in his voice.
Modeus clenched his teeth. "We have to cut off its power source. That repair mechanism must be drawing a ton of energy. If we can take out its core or disrupt its power supply, it won't be able to fix itself."
From his position in the middle, Abigail tried to remain calm under the relentless assault. "I saw some panels open up when it was repairing itself," he said, narrowing his eyes at the mecha. "That might be where we can hit it hard!"
He quickly aimed his weapon at the exposed sections of the mecha that appeared momentarily during its repair cycle. Each time the metal panels shifted, Abigail fired off a burst of rounds, trying to damage the internal mechanisms. "I need someone to help me focus fire on those weak spots!" he called out to Modeus.
"Target locked!" Modeus shouted back, his voice tense with focus. Neumann swiftly processed the visual data, helping Modeus aim precisely at the exposed panels. He fired repeatedly into the gaps, sending sparks flying from inside the mecha's body. For a moment, it looked like one of the internal mechanisms had taken some real damage, but it wasn't enough to stop it.
Realizing the mecha was growing more erratic, Takashima pulled an EMP bomb from his backpack. "If we can shut it down temporarily, we'll have enough time to destroy it completely," he said, yanking the pin. He shot a quick glance at Marlene. "I'll throw this. Once the system's down, you and Modeus hit its power core."
Marlene nodded, fully grasping the plan. Modeus readied his weapon, preparing for the crucial moment when they'd deliver the final blow.
Takashima waited for the right moment. As the mecha fired missiles toward them, he lobbed the EMP bomb toward its legs. A small blast followed, accompanied by a loud, crackling hum of electricity. Instantly, the mecha froze in place, appearing completely disabled.
"NOW!" Takashima shouted.
Modeus and Marlene sprang into action. With perfect coordination, they both aimed at the now-exposed energy core. Modeus pulled the trigger, and Marlene hurled a grenade into the open gap. The resulting explosion was deafening, blowing apart the internal workings of the mecha. Thick black smoke billowed out from the cracks in its armor.
The towering machine staggered, its massive frame groaning as it lost balance. Before crashing to the ground, it let out one final, ear-splitting hum—a death cry of an ancient machine. Then, with a thunderous crash, it collapsed onto the rubble-strewn floor. Sparks and small fires flickered within its shattered remains.
Takashima, Modeus, Abigail, and Marlene stood in place, panting, drenched in sweat. They exchanged glances, momentarily silent, ensuring the danger was truly over.
"I think… that's it," Marlene sighed, lowering her weapon and catching her breath.
Takashima powered down his shield, while Abigail cautiously approached the now-lifeless mecha. "We did it," he said with a relieved breath, though his eyes continued scanning the debris, wary of any lingering threats.
Modeus, with Neumann still active behind him, gave a faint smile. "Let's hope the next one doesn't come with self-repairing mechanism," he muttered.
As the battle with the mecha finally came to an end, Modeus, Abigail, Takashima, and Marlene stood around the now-motionless metal body. The ruins of the lab were eerily quiet, save for the sound of their heavy breathing as they tried to catch their breath after the intense fight. Thin smoke rose from the cracks in the mecha's armor, and small sparks flickered from its damaged parts.
Modeus, still gripping his Longstrike M-12, kept his distance, while Abigail moved closer to inspect the wreckage. Marlene stood a little further back, keeping watch on her surroundings, her eyes occasionally glancing at the detection screen on her wrist to make sure no additional threats were approaching.
Takashima carefully stepped forward, switching on a small light on his helmet as he began to inspect the mecha's body. "We need to figure out what made this thing so tough and capable of self-repair," he said, sifting through the shattered metal pieces. He pulled out a knife and started prying open one of the armored panels, revealing a tangled mess of cables and hardware inside, some of it worn down but still partially operational.
Marlene, a cigarette dangling from her lips, watched Takashima work. "Never seen a repair system work that fast," she muttered. "If my car had something like that, I wouldn't have to stop in the middle of the desert for repairs again."
"This is strange," Abigail said, gently touching one of the exposed sections. "This thing should've been dead by now, but its systems were still functioning before we blew it up."
Takashima finally managed to pry open the deepest panel of the mecha's system. In the dim light, a small, faintly glowing component came into view. It was a rectangular processor, with ancient-looking text etched across its surface. The processor gleamed under the light from Takashima's helmet. Written clearly on it in bold, silver letters was the word "Aether."
Takashima's eyes widened. "This is it," he whispered. "An automatic processor. Aether… It looks like part of an old security system from this facility."
Abigail leaned in, intrigued by the processor. "So this isn't just any mecha? It was built to defend this place from intruders?"
"Exactly. They used these autonomous mecha to protect the facility from anyone trying to break in or loot the place. But it's been running way beyond its intended capacity, and it's been modified—by someone or something," Takashima explained, cutting a few cables leading to the processor, shutting down the remaining power within it. "Based on the data I gathered before we entered these ruins, this facility was used for military and experimental technology research back during the war. This mecha was likely meant to protect whatever secrets were stored in this lab, and it wouldn't have stopped until we were all dead—if we hadn't managed to destroy it in time."
Abigail studied the processor with a sharp gaze. "We got lucky destroying it. If its repair system had been more advanced, we might not have made it out of here alive."
Marlene, keeping watch behind them, took a long drag from her cigarette before exhaling the smoke. "So basically, we just took down some ancient security guard that should've died thousands of years ago?" she quipped with a grin.
Modeus shook his head. "There's more to this. If this was a security system, why did only one mecha show up? Could there be more?"
Marlene blew out the last of her smoke and flicked the cigarette butt away. "Well, let's hope this was the only one," she replied sarcastically, though a smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.
They stood there for a moment, taking in the wreckage of the mecha and trying to make sense of the ancient technology they'd just faced. The brief calm didn't last long, though.
Marlene's detection device, always scanning, suddenly beeped. She raised her hand, signaling everyone to stay quiet. "Something's coming," she whispered, her eyes locked on the screen. "And there's more than a few."
Takashima quickly pulled the Aether processor out and shoved it into his backpack. "We need to get out of here, now."
A familiar, unsettling sound echoed from the hallway where the mecha had first appeared—the scraping of metal, but mixed with something more organic, more alive. Everyone tensed, their eyes narrowing as they focused on the dark corridor.
Takashima snapped back into action, reactivating his shield and preparing his weapon. "Everyone, get ready," he commanded.
Out of the darkness, strange creatures emerged, sending a chill through them all. They were massive, like bears, but their bodies were grotesquely altered—parts of their flesh missing, replaced with crude mechanical components that looked like the result of twisted experiments. Each movement made an eerie whirring sound. Their eyes glowed with a sickly green-yellow hue, showing they were some kind of mutant or experiment gone wrong. Low growls mixed with mechanical noises filled the air, thickening the already tense atmosphere. The creatures emitted a strange radiation, warping the air around them and filling the space with a sharp ozone smell that stung the nostrils.
"Damn," Modeus hissed, his eyes widening at the sight of the creatures. "This is way worse than we imagined."
"Mutated biological creatures... and they're emitting nuclear radiation," Marlene said, her voice almost disbelieving. "We need to get out of here, now!"
Abigail had already taken several steps back, his eyes fixed on the bears, which were picking up speed and charging at them with unnatural swiftness for their size. "If we're trapped here, the radiation will kill us before we even get a chance to fight them."
Marlene turned her detection device back on, the numbers on the screen showing escalating radiation levels. "We need to leave immediately. If not, we're all at risk of fatal radiation exposure."
Takashima, recognizing the increased danger, said, "We don't have any other choice. We need to fall back to the main entrance and call for help from the guards outside!"
Hearing this, Modeus immediately turned around. "Everyone, fall back now!" he shouted urgently. Without wasting a second, they all ran toward the laboratory entrance, retracing their steps. The once-quiet corridors were now filled with the sounds of hurried footsteps and the ominous growls of the creatures pursuing them.
Takashima, with his powered shield, stayed at the rear, blocking energy blasts from the mechanical parts of the bears. Each energy beam that struck his shield caused sparks and loud noises, but Takashima pressed on, ensuring no one was left behind.
"Their speed isn't natural," Takashima shouted, his breath heavy from the strain of his shield. "If we don't get out of here soon, we'll be trapped!"
Marlene, quick on her feet, activated her communication device and connected with the outside guard team. "All units outside! We're under attack by mutated creatures emitting radiation! We need immediate support at the main entrance!" Her voice was filled with urgency but remained firm.
As they continued to run, Abigail pulled an EMP grenade from his belt and threw it behind them, hoping to slow the creatures down. The EMP blast hit one of the pursuing mechanical bears, causing its mechanical parts to momentarily stop functioning. Unfortunately, the effect was short-lived. The creature writhed, its biological components seemingly unaffected by the electromagnetic explosion.
"The grenade only disrupted their mechanical parts," Abigail said. "But it's not enough to stop them."
Modeus, leading the way, sprinted as fast as he could but kept an eye on the situation behind him. "We need to pick up the pace. The entrance is just ahead!" he shouted, the heavy thuds of the creatures' footsteps growing louder.
Finally, after racing through endless dark corridors and rooms, they could see the light from the main entrance ahead. "We're almost there!" Marlene gasped, pulling out her weapon and preparing for whatever awaited them outside.
As they reached the entrance, the guard team outside was already in position. The large security robots that had been with Takashima since the start were ready with their heavy weaponry. Takashima gave a quick signal. "Open fire!" As the team emerged from the ruins, the guards immediately started shooting at the mutated biological creatures emerging from the lab entrance.
The robots unleashed their firepower on the advancing monsters. Heavy gunfire and explosions shook the air, and one by one, the mecha-bio monsters were torn apart. Sparks, metal, and burning flesh flew in all directions as the security robots ruthlessly destroyed the enemies.
Takashima, still holding his shield, stepped back to ensure none of the creatures breached their defenses. Meanwhile, the guards in powered suits began attacking with heavy-caliber bullets and missiles. The shots hit the creatures directly, causing massive explosions that obliterated most of them.
After a few minutes of intense fire, the biological monsters fell one by one, their bodies shattered and the radiation they emitted began to subside. The atmosphere grew calmer.
Everyone stood in silence, staring at the wreckage and the now-motionless creatures. "We made it," Modeus muttered, his eyes still alert for any remaining threats.
Marlene took another deep drag from her cigarette, as if trying to calm her frayed nerves. "Who knows what else might be hidden in there."
Takashima lowered his shield, still breathing heavily. "This isn't just ordinary rubble. We need to report this to the Old World Network as soon as possible."
Abigail, his gaze fixed on the ruins behind them, wore a serious expression. "This isn't over. If Aether is a security system, then there's likely much more hidden inside. We've only scratched the surface of the problem."
Modeus, remaining silent, simply nodded. He realized that this journey was just beginning, and greater dangers awaited them within the ancient ruins filled with secrets.
