Lila woke up to the gentle sound of rain tapping against her window. The gray skies and soft drizzle made for a perfect cozy morning. She stretched lazily in bed, feeling more rested than she had in weeks. There was something serene about a rainy day, a sense of quiet that mirrored the calm she had begun to find within herself.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, and she reached for it, smiling when she saw a text from Alex.
Alex: Hey! Hope you're feeling good today. Fancy grabbing lunch? I've got a surprise.
Lila grinned. Alex was always good at surprising her, and she could use a nice lunch out. The thought of spending more time with him, especially after the comfort he had provided over the past few months, filled her with a sense of warmth.
Lila: You know I love a good surprise! Where should we meet?
Alex: How about the little Italian place on Oak Street? 1 PM?
Lila: Perfect! See you then.
After a slow morning, complete with a hot cup of tea and a chapter of her favorite book, Lila made her way to the Italian restaurant. The rain had slowed to a light mist, and the streets were glistening with the soft sheen of water. The restaurant was a small, family-run place with cozy booths and the smell of fresh pasta that greeted her the moment she stepped inside.
She spotted Alex immediately, sitting at a table by the window. His brown hair was a little damp from the rain, but he looked cheerful as ever, a mischievous smile playing on his lips.
Lila took a seat across from him, raising an eyebrow. "Alright, spill. What's this surprise?"
Alex chuckled and leaned back in his chair. "Patience, Lila. You'll see soon enough."
They ordered their food—Lila opting for her favorite spinach and ricotta ravioli, while Alex chose a hearty lasagna. As they waited, they chatted about the shelter, Lila's progress, and Claire's idea for a mountain getaway.
"So when's this trip happening?" Alex asked, clearly intrigued.
"Hopefully soon," Lila said with a smile. "We're thinking about sometime in November. A nice break before the holiday chaos."
"Sounds like a dream. You and Claire deserve it," Alex said earnestly.
Their food arrived, and they began eating, the conversation flowing easily as it always did. Lila was halfway through her ravioli when Alex checked his watch and grinned.
"Alright," he said, "I think it's time for the surprise."
Lila put down her fork, her curiosity piqued. "Okay, what is it ? "
Alex gestured to the door. "Just wait."
Lila turned, watching as the door to the restaurant opened. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw who walked in.
It was Ethan.
Lila froze, her mind racing. She hadn't seen Ethan in months—not since everything had happened with Mark. They had lost touch after the chaos, and Lila had assumed he had moved on with his life. But here he was, standing in the doorway, his eyes scanning the room until they landed on her.
"Surprise," Alex said quietly.
Lila blinked, trying to process what was happening. Ethan walked over to the table, his expression a mix of uncertainty and hope.
"Hey, Lila," he said softly, his voice familiar and warm. "It's been a while."
Lila stared at him for a moment, her emotions swirling. She had missed Ethan, though she hadn't let herself admit it. Their relationship had been complicated—he had been there for her when things started to unravel, but when Mark's threats escalated, they had drifted apart. Lila had distanced herself, not wanting to drag Ethan into the mess. But seeing him now, she realized just how much she had missed him.
"Ethan," she finally said, her voice steady but laced with emotion. "I… I wasn't expecting this."
Ethan smiled, a little awkwardly, but his eyes were kind. "Yeah, Alex mentioned you might be surprised."
Alex stood up, giving Lila a gentle pat on the shoulder. "I'll give you two a minute." He shot Lila a supportive smile before slipping out of the restaurant, leaving her and Ethan alone.
Lila stared at Ethan, her heart pounding. "How have you been?" she asked, feeling like she was tiptoeing around something bigger.
"I've been okay," Ethan said, sitting down across from her. "I've been thinking about you a lot, though. I wanted to reach out, but… I didn't know if you'd want to hear from me."
Lila sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I wasn't sure what I wanted back then, either. Things were so… chaotic. I didn't want to pull you into it."
"I get that," Ethan said gently. "But, Lila… I cared about you. I still do. And I wanted to be there for you, but you kind of shut me out."
Lila bit her lip, guilt creeping in. "I know. And I'm sorry. I wasn't in a good place, and I didn't know how to handle everything. It was easier to push people away."
Ethan reached across the table, his hand covering hers. "You don't have to apologize. I just want to know if we can start over. I've missed you."
Lila looked into his eyes, the sincerity in his voice breaking through the walls she had built around herself. She had missed him too, more than she had allowed herself to admit. And now, sitting here with him, she realized that maybe it was time to stop running from her feelings.
"I've missed you too, Ethan," she said quietly. "And I think… I think I'd like to start over."
Ethan's smile was slow, but it reached his eyes, lighting up his face. "I'd like that."
They sat there for a while, just talking—about everything and nothing, catching up on the time they had missed. It was easy, like slipping back into a comfortable rhythm, and Lila felt a sense of peace that she hadn't felt in a long time.
By the time they left the restaurant, the rain had stopped, and the clouds were beginning to break, allowing slivers of sunlight to peek through. Ethan walked Lila to her apartment, the two of them strolling slowly down the rain-slicked streets, talking and laughing as if no time had passed at all.
As they reached her building, Ethan paused, turning to face her. "I'm really glad we did this."
"Me too," Lila said, her heart feeling lighter than it had in months.
Ethan hesitated for a moment before stepping forward and pulling her into a gentle hug. Lila melted into the embrace, feeling a sense of warmth and safety that she hadn't realized she had been missing.
When they pulled apart, Ethan gave her a soft smile. "I'll see you soon, okay?"
"Okay," Lila said, her smile matching his.
As she watched him walk away, Lila felt a spark of hope ignite in her chest. This was the beginning of something new, something she was ready to explore. For the first time in a long time, she felt like her life was falling back into place—not just with her friends, but with herself.
She walked up the steps to her apartment, feeling a sense of anticipation for what was to come.
