Chapter 5: The Festival of Lights

The school was buzzing with excitement as the annual festival approached. Students were busy preparing their displays, performances, and booths. Scarlet oversaw organizing a gallery for student art, while Julian was helping with the writing section.

During one of their late-night planning sessions, Takeshi pulled Julian aside. "Hey, I've got something to tell you," Takeshi said, his tone more serious than usual.

Julian raised an eyebrow, sensing that this was something important. "What's up?"

Takeshi hesitated, then blurted out, "I am into Scarlet. Like, really into her."

Julian's heart sank. He had been avoiding thinking too much about his feelings for Scarlet but hearing this from Takeshi made everything more real. "Oh," was all he could manage to say.

"I'm going to tell her at the festival," Takeshi continued, oblivious to Julian's inner turmoil. "I just wanted you to know first since you're my best friend."

Julian forced a smile. "Yeah, man, go for it."

But inside, he felt like his world was crumbling. That night, he could not focus on his writing. His thoughts were a tangled mess of jealousy, guilt, and confusion.

The festival arrived, and the school was transformed into a vibrant hub of activity. Scarlet's artwork was a hit, her paintings capturing the essence of the town's beauty. Julian admired her from afar, his chest tightening with emotions he did not know how to manage.

After the festival, as the students started to clean up, Julian found himself alone with Scarlet. They walked through the dimly lit halls, the echoes of the day's festivities still lingering in the air.

"Your paintings were amazing," Julian said, breaking the silence.

"Thanks," Scarlet replied, her smile a little sad. "It feels weird, though. Like, everyone loves them, but I am still not sure if this is what I am supposed to be doing."

Julian nodded, understanding her doubts. "You are amazing, Scarlet. Do not let anyone make you doubt that."

Scarlet looked at him, her expression softening. "Julian, I…"

Before she could finish, Takeshi appeared, his usual grin in place. "Hey, guys! Julian, can I talk to you for a second?"

Julian's heart sank, but he nodded. "Sure."

Scarlet watched them go, a knot of unease forming in her stomach. She had a feeling that something was about to change, and she was not sure she was ready for it.
