Chapter 24: The Sea of Silence

The Silence Before the Fury

In front of them spread the boundless Sea of Silence, its placid waters reflecting the sky like a mirror. Lost in their own thoughts, Derek, Emma, Kai, and Lila sat in quiet aboard the little boat. The prophesy continued to weigh heavily on their thoughts. The Hall of Memories appeared to be both their final opportunity to learn the truth and a gateway to unfathomable peril.

"How much further?" Emma questioned, breaking the unsettling silence.

As he stood at the boat's helm, Derek looked out to sea. It's hard to determine. This is not like any sea we have ever seen. The silence gives the impression that time has stood still."

Lila sat next to Kai, her brow raised as she stared out to sea creases. Something is hidden beneath the surface. It isn't organic."

Kai moved uncomfortably. "I've also been experiencing it. It seems as though someone is observing us from underneath. However, nothing exists. not even a smudge in the ocean."

The weather became colder and a heavy fog rolled in, making it impossible for them to see the beach behind them as the boat continued to drift out to sea. Even though there was no wind or tide driving them ahead, the boat groaned beneath the weight.

Abruptly, there was a faint buzzing noise coming from under the boat. It was subtle, yet quite noticeable. Derek's gut told him there was a serious problem, so he gripped the boat's rudder harder.

His voice strained. "We need to be ready," he continued. "Whatever's down there—it's not friendly."

The Rise of Leviathan

Little ripples started to develop around the boat as the still waters of the Sea of Silence started to buzz. Raising their heads, the group surveyed the water for any indication of life.

Abruptly, the water sprang upwards, revealing a giant beast that had surfaced from the depths. Its black scales, which glinted with an unsettling brightness, covered its sinuous body. As the thing grew, its eyes gleamed with a malignant intelligence that made it seem like a living mountain looming above the boat.

"A Leviathan!" Lila let out a gasp that was mixed with amazement and shock.

With a roar so loud it shook the air and caused waves to slam against the little boat. Heart pounding, Derek took his sword out of its sheath.

"We need to move—now!" Derek yelled.

However, the Leviathan sprang at them before they could respond, its enormous jaws snapping only a few inches from the boat. Kai channeled his spiritual force to surround them in a shield of protection.

"This is just too powerful! We must not engage it head-on." With a tight expression of concentration, Kai screamed.

With her bow drawn, Emma directed her elemental strength into the arrow. We must divert its attention! Please slow it down, Lila."

Lila nodded, concentrating her energies and calling out vines from the ocean's depths. The Leviathan's motions were slowed by the vines wrapping around its body, but the beast was too strong. It flailed wildly, effortlessly seizing itself from the vines.

"It's not enough!" Lila let out a cry, her strength wavering.

Derek took a deep grip on his sword. "We don't need to overcome it; simply get away." He peered out across the horizon and noticed a far-off island. "There it is! We are able to reach that island!"

Emma shot, aiming for the eyes of the Leviathan. They had a little window of opportunity when the target of the arrow let out a painful roar.

"Now!" Raising the boat toward the island, Derek let out a cry.

When Kai used all of his energy, the boat started to move forward, and a gust of wind was created. Still full of wrath, the Leviathan chased after them, its gigantic form sending waves crashing on the boat.

The Leviathan attacked again as they got closer to the island, but Derek was prepared. He enveloped the boat with a wall of fire by directing his elemental strength into his sword. They had just enough time to make it to the coast before Leviathan retreated from the flames.

The Lost Souls Island

Shaken and out of breath, the gang staggered onto the beach. With blazing eyes, the Leviathan observed them from the water's edge, but it did not come ashore to pursue them.

"That was extremely close," Emma said, dabbing at her perspiration. "What was that thing?"

"A protector of the Sea of Silence," Lila retorted in a somber tone. "This place is more dangerous than we thought."

Sheathing his weapon, Derek took a quick look around. Mist enveloped the island, and the trees were withered and twisted, their branches extending like bony fingers. The air had an unsettling quiet, and the surface felt strange under their boots, lifeless and frigid.

Derek stated that "we need to keep moving." "The Hall of Memories is still ahead of us."

They continued to feel as though they were being watched as they explored further of the island. Strange murmurs permeated the air as shadows moved in the fog.

With his anxious eyes darting all about, Kai mumbled, "I don't like this place." "It feels… haunted."

Lila gave a nod of approval. "This is a cursed island. It's referred to as the Lost Souls Island. People who come here in search of power frequently never go back."

Derek came to a standstill, his hand resting on his sword's hilt. Then, we must exercise caution. Whatever is in store for us here won't be simple.

The Historical Voices

They continued, and the murmurs

became thicker and the sound more intense. The shadows became more defined, eerie silhouettes that moved among the woods, their features empty and colorless.

"Do you hear that?" Emma questioned, her voice faltering. "The voices... they sound like they're calling to us."

Derek paid careful attention, his heart racing. The voices were unmistakably feeble but echoed with recollections of others who had come before them, voices from the past. His own name and the names of his pals were being whispered to him.

Lila said, "They know us," her terrified eyes wide. "Those who were unsuccessful in the trials have these spirits. They are attempting to alert us."

But the ground under their feet started to move as the murmurs got louder. The island seemed to spring to life, the soil quivering and the trees swinging.

"We need to move!" It was already too late when Derek yelled.

The floor parted beneath them, and as they plunged into the obscurity, the murmurs trailed behind them.
