Chapter 33

Ryuu arrived moments later, her arms laden with platters of steaming roast meats, hearty stews, and freshly baked bread. The aroma wafting through the air made my mouth water in anticipation.

"Here we are," Ryuu said, setting down the plates in front of us. "Enjoy."

Phineas and the others wasted no time digging in, their eyes lighting up with delight at the first bite.

"Wow, this is incredible!" Phineas exclaimed, taking another enthusiastic mouthful.

Ferb nodded in agreement, his eyes widening as he savored the flavors.

Isabella beamed. "It's absolutely delicious! The seasonings are so perfectly balanced."

Even the skeptical Candace seemed to be won over, her initial hesitation melting away as she took a bite.

"Hmm, not bad," she admitted, taking another, larger spoonful of the stew.

Baljeet, ever the scholar, paused to ponder the dish. "The blend of spices is quite fascinating. I detect notes of rosemary, thyme, and...is that a hint of garlic?"

Ryuu smiled, clearly pleased by their enthusiastic reactions. "I'm glad you're all enjoying it. Our chefs take great pride in their work."

Buford, who had been eyeing his apple juice with a slight pout, perked up as he tore into a piece of the roast meat. "Yeah, this is pretty good stuff," he mumbled through a mouthful.

I chuckled, taking a bite of my own meal. The flavors exploded on my tongue - the tender meat, the rich gravy, the perfectly seasoned vegetables. It was a taste of home, yet uniquely Orarian.

"This is absolutely amazing," I said, savoring each bite. "Ryuu, your staff has truly outdone themselves."

Ryuu inclined her head graciously. "Thank you, David. I'll be sure to pass along the compliments."

As we continued to eat, I couldn't help but steal glances at my friends from Danville. Phineas and Ferb were engaged in a lively discussion with Baljeet about the culinary techniques used, while Isabella and Candace chatted animatedly, their earlier reservations seemingly forgotten.

Buford, for his part, was focused entirely on his plate, wolfing down the food with gusto. Hestia, ever the doting mother figure, kept a watchful eye on him, occasionally reminding him to slow down and use his napkin.

As we finished our plates, Ryuu returned to collect the empty dishes. "I take it everything was to your liking?"

Phineas beamed. "Absolutely! That was one of the most delicious meals I've ever had."

Ferb nodded in agreement, a rare smile gracing his features.

I couldn't help but chuckle as Phineas turned to me with a mischievous grin. "Say, David, do you think we could borrow your kitchen for a bit? I've got some ideas for how to improve on the flavors we just experienced."

Mia, who had been hovering nearby, perked up at Phineas' request. "Well, now, that's an interesting proposition. You think you can make my food even better?" A hint of challenge crept into her voice, but I could see the curiosity shining in her eyes.

"Absolutely!" Phineas replied without hesitation. "Ferb and I would be more than happy to give it a try, if you'll have us."

Mia considered for a moment, then nodded decisively. "Alright, you two, let's see what you've got. The kitchen is all yours."

Phineas turned to his brother, his enthusiasm infectious. "Ferb, you ready to work your magic?"

Ferb responded with a simple nod, but I could see the spark of determination in his eyes.

The two of them made their way to the kitchen, and I watched as they began to gather ingredients and equipment, moving with a practiced efficiency that belied their young age. Mia hovered nearby, her arms crossed, but I could see the anticipation written on her face.

It wasn't long before tantalizing aromas began to waft out from the kitchen, and the patrons in the tavern grew restless, craning their necks to catch a glimpse of the culinary wizardry unfolding.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Phineas and Ferb emerged, bearing a tray laden with various dishes. Mia stepped forward, her eyes narrowed in scrutiny, as the two brothers presented their creations.

"Alright, let's see what you've got," Mia said, her voice gruff but tinged with curiosity.

Phineas beamed, gesturing to the plates before them. "We've taken your already delicious dishes and added a few twists. For example, we've infused the roast meat with a blend of herbs and spices that we think will really make the flavors pop."

Mia nodded, picking up a piece of the meat and taking a thoughtful bite. Her eyes widened, and a small smile tugged at the corners of her lips.

"Well, I'll be," she murmured, taking another bite. "This is something else."

Phineas beamed, clearly pleased with Mia's reaction. "We're glad you're enjoying it! We'd be more than happy to help out around the tavern for the day, if you'll have us."

Mia considered for a moment, then nodded decisively. "Alright, you two, you've got yourselves a deal. I could use the extra hands, especially with the dinner rush coming up."

Phineas turned to me, Isabella, Hestia, Lunamon, Buford, and Baljeet, a mischievous grin on his face. "Well, what do you say, guys? Care to lend a hand?"

I glanced at Hestia and Lunamon, who both nodded enthusiastically. "We'd be honored to help," Hestia said, her eyes shining with excitement.

Isabella stepped forward, her hand raised. "The Fireside Girls are always ready to assist! Count us in."

Buford let out a grunt. "Eh, why not? Might as well make myself useful."

Baljeet, ever the eager learner, chimed in. "I would be delighted to assist in any way I can. This is an excellent opportunity to expand my culinary knowledge."

All eyes turned to Candace, who had been uncharacteristically quiet throughout the exchange. She let out a long-suffering sigh, but I could see the corners of her mouth twitching upward.

"Fine, I guess I'll help too," she said, though her tone lacked its usual exasperation.

Phineas clapped his hands together, beaming. "Excellent! Alright, everyone, let's get to work!"

With that, we sprang into action. Hestia, Isabella, Lunamon, and Candace were tasked with serving customers, while Phineas, Ferb, Baljeet, Buford, and I headed to the kitchen.

As I stepped into the bustling workspace, I was struck by the organized chaos that seemed to permeate every corner. Mia barked orders, her voice cutting through the sizzling of pans and the clanging of pots. Phineas and Ferb immediately set to work, their movements fluid and coordinated as they prepared various dishes.

Baljeet hovered nearby, his eyes wide with fascination. "Fascinating! The level of efficiency and teamwork is truly remarkable."

Buford, on the other hand, simply rolled up his sleeves and dove in, his beefy arms making quick work of chopping vegetables.

"Alright, listen up!" Mia called out, her gaze sweeping over us. "Phineas, Ferb, you two are in charge of the main dishes. Baljeet, you're on prep work. Buford, you're on the heavy lifting. And you," she said, pointing at me, "you're on dish duty. Let's move, people!"

I nodded, quickly donning an apron and getting to work. The rhythm of the kitchen was like a well-choreographed dance, with each of us playing our part. Phineas and Ferb worked in perfect sync, their hands a blur as they seasoned, seared, and plated the various entrees. Baljeet meticulously chopped, diced, and measured, his attention to detail unwavering. Buford, despite his initial gruff demeanor, proved to be a powerhouse, effortlessly lifting heavy pots and pans.

As for me, I found a strange sense of satisfaction in the monotony of dish washing, my hands working tirelessly to ensure every plate and utensil was spotless. It was a far cry from the adventuring I had grown accustomed to, but there was a certain meditative quality to the task that I found soothing.

Out in the dining area, I could hear the lively chatter of the patrons and the occasional laughter of Hestia, Isabella, Lunamon, and Candace as they interacted with the customers. I couldn't help but feel a swell of pride, knowing that we were all working together to ensure the Hostess of Fertility ran smoothly.

Time seemed to slip away as we continued our tasks, the hours flying by in a blur of activity. Mia, to her credit, kept us all on track, her keen eye and no-nonsense approach ensuring that every dish that left the kitchen was up to her exacting standards.

I was elbow-deep in soapy dishwater when I heard Anya's voice ring out across the bustling tavern.

"The Loki Familia is coming!"

My head snapped up, water sloshing over the sides of the sink as I turned towards the entrance. Sure enough, a group of imposing figures had just stepped through the doors of the Hostess of Fertility.

Leading the pack was Loki herself, the mischievous goddess radiating an aura of confidence and authority. Beside her strode Aiz Wallenstein, the legendary Sword Princess, her golden hair cascading down her back. Finn Deimne, the captain of the Loki Familia, followed closely, his keen eyes scanning the room.

The rest of the Familia trailed behind - Gareth, the stalwart dwarf; Riveria, the elegant elven mage; the Amazon twins, Tiona and Tione; and Bete, the feral werewolf. Even Lefiya, the young elven mage I had encountered in the Dungeon, was among them.

I felt my heart begin to race as they made their way across the tavern, drawing the attention of everyone present. Mia, ever the consummate professional, stepped forward to greet them, her voice booming over the din of the crowd.

I watched nervously as Mia approached the Loki Familia, my hands still submerged in the soapy dishwater. Mia's voice carried across the tavern, her gruff tone belying the warmth in her expression.

"Loki, good to see you and your Familia. I've got your usual table ready." Mia gestured towards a secluded corner of the tavern.

Loki, the mischievous goddess, flashed a toothy grin. "Ah, Mia, you know me so well. We're famished after a long day in the Dungeon."

Mia nodded. "Well, you're in for a treat. The menu's got a few new items thanks to some talented help in the kitchen." Her gaze briefly flickered in my direction.

Loki raised a curious brow. "Is that so? Well, now you've piqued my interest." Her crimson eyes scanned the room, finally settling on me.

I felt my heart skip a beat as Loki's piercing gaze met mine. There was a glint of mischief in her eyes, and I couldn't help but wonder what she was thinking.

I froze as Loki's gaze landed on me, her crimson eyes filled with curiosity. I gripped the soapy dishrag tightly, my mind racing to come up with a plausible excuse for my presence in the Hostess of Fertility.

"David? What are you doing working here?" Loki asked, her voice laced with amusement.

I swallowed hard, trying to keep my composure. "Oh, you know, just helping out for the day," I replied, hoping my nonchalant tone would convince her.

But Loki was not one to be easily fooled. She sauntered closer, a sly grin spreading across her face. "Is that so? I must say, I'm intrigued. I didn't take you for the type to be slaving away in a tavern kitchen."

Before I could respond, a familiar voice cut through the air.

"Loki! Leave him be!" Hestia stormed over, her blue eyes flashing with annoyance.

Loki let out a dramatic sigh. "Ah, Shorty, always the killjoy. Can't I simply have a friendly chat with your newest Familia member?"

Hestia planted her hands on her hips, her petite frame doing little to diminish the intensity of her glare. "Not when you're trying to pry into his business. David is here to help, and that's all you need to know."

The two goddesses stared each other down, the air thick with tension. I glanced nervously between them, unsure of how to defuse the situation.

I watched in stunned silence as Riveria stepped forward and swiftly knocked Loki's head, stopping the goddess' teasing. Loki let out a dramatic yelp, clutching the back of her skull.

"Ow, Mama! That hurt!" Loki whined, pouting like a petulant child.

Riveria fixed Loki with a stern gaze. "Then stop fooling around and let the boy be. We have more important matters to discuss."

Loki rubbed the sore spot on her head, muttering under her breath. "Fine, fine. You always know how to ruin my fun."

I stood there, dumbfounded, as Riveria turned her attention towards Hestia and me. "Hestia-sama, David, please accept my apologies for Loki's behavior. She can be rather...difficult at times."

I waved my hand dismissively. "No need to apologize, Riveria. I understand Loki's teasing nature all too well." I glanced over at the pouting goddess, who was still rubbing the back of her head.

Riveria nodded, her expression softening. "I'm glad you're not offended. Speaking of which, are you the one they call the Goliath Slayer?"

I couldn't help but smile proudly. "The one and only," I replied, feeling a surge of confidence.

Hestia beamed up at me, her eyes shining with admiration. "That's right! David here is my Familia's greatest adventurer."

Riveria's brows rose in surprise. "Impressive. It's not often we see a Level 1 adventurer take down a Monster Rex." She studied me with a thoughtful gaze. "You must be quite the talented individual."

I felt my cheeks warm under her scrutiny. "I simply had the right partner by my side," I said, glancing over at Lunamon, who had been quietly observing the exchange.

The Loki Familia settled into their seats, eager anticipation written across their faces. Mama Mia's staff swiftly delivered their orders, the aroma of the hearty roast meat and savory stews filling the air.

Tione and Tiona were the first to take a bite, their eyes widening in delight. "Wow, this is amazing!" Tione exclaimed, her voice laced with surprise.

Tiona nodded enthusiastically, her mouth already full. "Mmhmm, so good!" she mumbled through a mouthful of food.

Riveria daintily sipped her stew, a thoughtful expression on her face. "Exquisite. The flavors are perfectly balanced."

Loki leaned back in her chair, a satisfied grin on her face. "Well, well, looks like Mama Mia has outdone herself this time." She cast a sly glance in my direction.

"Actually, the credit goes to Phineas and Ferb," I replied, gesturing towards the two boys who were eagerly digging into their own meals.

Mama Mia, who had been observing the Loki Familia's reactions, let out a hearty laugh. "That's right, these young lads are the ones responsible for the deliciousness you're enjoying."

Loki's eyes sparkled with mischief as she leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand. "So, are these newcomers going to be joining your staff, Mama Mia?" she asked in a playful tone.

I tensed slightly, unsure of how to respond, but Mama Mia let out a hearty laugh. "Oh no, they're not new workers," she said, waving her hand dismissively. "These young ones are just helping out for the day."

Loki's brows rose in amusement. "Is that so? Well, they certainly seem to have the knack for it." She cast a sidelong glance at Phineas and Ferb, who were happily chatting with Baljeet and Buford.

I let out a small sigh of relief, grateful that Mama Mia had handled the situation so smoothly. The last thing I wanted was for Loki to start prying into the details of our visit from Danville.

The Loki Familia continued to indulge in the delectable fare, their initial skepticism giving way to genuine delight. Loki herself seemed particularly pleased, occasionally casting amused glances in my direction. I did my best to avoid her gaze, focusing instead on the task at hand.

As I scrubbed away at the dishes, I couldn't help but notice Aiz Wallenstein approaching me. The Sword Princess had a pensive expression on her face as she drew near.

"David," she said, her voice soft yet commanding. "I wanted to congratulate you on your impressive feat of defeating the Goliath. Reaching Level 2 in such a short time is no small accomplishment."

I felt a surge of pride at her words, and I straightened my posture, meeting her gaze. "Thank you, Aiz. I couldn't have done it without the support of my Familia."

Aiz nodded, her golden eyes studying me intently. "Can I ask you something?"

"What is it?" I asked.

Aiz looked at me, her golden eyes steady. "How did you become so strong?" she said.

I hesitated, unsure of how much I should reveal. "Well, let's just say I've taken a...unconventional path to get where I am." I offered her a sheepish smile, hoping she wouldn't pry further.

Before Aiz could respond, a booming voice cut through the din of the tavern.

"Oi, you! Goliath Slayer!" Bete, the feral werewolf of the Loki Familia, stalked towards me, his amber eyes narrowed in a drunken haze.

I braced myself, unsure of what to expect. Bete had never been one to mince words, and his volatile temper was well-known throughout Orario.

"So, you think you're hot stuff, don't you?" Bete growled, his lips curled in a sneer. "Reaching Level 2 in a measly seven weeks? Don't make me laugh!"

I opened my mouth to respond, but Bete cut me off with a dismissive wave of his hand.

"Tch, you're probably just some lucky bastard who stumbled his way through the Dungeon. Ain't no way a weakling like you could've taken down the Goliath on your own."

I felt my hackles rise at his words, but before I could defend myself, Aiz stepped forward, her expression stern.

"Bete, that's enough." Her voice was sharp, brooking no argument. "David's accomplishments speak for themselves."

Bete scoffed, his gaze shifting between Aiz and me. "Whatever. I still think he's full of shit." With that, he turned on his heel and stormed back to his table, muttering under his breath.

I narrowed my eyes at Bete's condescending words, my grip tightening on the dish I was scrubbing. "How about you come over here and see for yourself if I'm a phony?" I challenged, my voice laced with a confidence I didn't fully feel.

Bete's lips curled into a savage grin. "Gladly," he growled, slamming his mug down on the table as he stalked towards me.

Aiz stepped forward, her expression concerned. "Bete, this isn't necessary—"

"Step aside, Aiz," Bete snapped, never taking his eyes off me. "This is between me and the 'Goliath Slayer' here."

I glanced over at Aiz, silently pleading with her to let this play out. As much as I respected her, I couldn't back down from Bete's taunts. "She's right, Aiz. This is my fight."

Aiz hesitated for a moment, her brow furrowed, before finally relenting with a sigh. "Very well. But don't do anything reckless."

I nodded, already moving to follow Bete outside. As we passed the Loki Familia's table, I caught Buford's eye. "Alright! This is going to be good," he exclaimed, a gleam of excitement in his gaze.

Baljeet, on the other hand, looked uneasy. "This is not a good idea," he murmured, wringing his hands anxiously.

I ignored Baljeet's concerns, my focus solely on the confrontation that was about to unfold. This was my chance to prove myself, not just to Bete, but to the entire Loki Familia. As we stepped out into the cool night air, I felt a surge of adrenaline coursing through my veins.

Bete turned to face me, his feral grin still in place. "Alright, Goliath Slayer," he said, cracking his knuckles. "Let's see what you've got."
