She was correct

Kayler's grandmother worriedly announced.

"Kayler, my dear! Y-your grandfather..!" Kayler's grandmother said as she hugged the life out of Kayler.

It had taken quite some time before Kayler had reached her grandfather's house and when she did, she was surprised at how quiet the house was.

She guessed that it was because of her grandfather being sick that the servants in the house were quiet and hiding away from sight.

She couldn't blame them though, her grandmother wasn't the nicest person to others when she was overwhelmed.

Kayler and her grandmother hurried upstairs, where her grandfather's room was placed and opened the door harshly.

"Grandpa!" Kayler cried out in pain as she inched closer to her sleeping grandfather.

Her grandfather had always been in bad health ever since he reached an old age. It wasn't a secret but seeing her grandfather who always smiled and had a joyful attitude lying down motionlessly on the bed with some medical equipment hooked to him, it absolutely broke her heart.

"We couldn't take him to the hospital because his condition wasn't stable enough so we just called the family doctor." Her grandmother explained.

"And what did the doctor say?" Kayler asked as she brought a chair to sit down beside the bed that her grandfather was lying on.

"He said that your grandfather..." Her grandmother began but was stopped by the abrupt cracking of her voice and the tears that followed after.

"What would happen to grandfather?" Kayler asked. She knew she wouldn't like the answer but she had to know.

The hand that she was using to hold her grandfather's hand tightened as the tears that were held captive in her eyes threatened to escape.

"The doctor said he might not live long..." Her grandmother said in between sobs.

"What?" Kayler was stunned.

Her grandfather who she held in so much regard might die soon.

How could she accept that?

It was impossible.

But, seeing her grandfather's situation, maybe it was true?

"How long does he have left?" Kayler asked quickly.

"I don't know, they said that he had to be stable first before they conduct more tests on him."

Her grandmother answered her question as she paced around the room slowly.

Kayler had her mouth wide open.

What did the doctor mean that he wasn't sure?

Wasn't it his job?

The room was silent after that and both the grandmother and grand-daughter stared at Kayler's grandfather for some time until they heard a soft groan.

"Grandpa!" Kaylar exclaimed loudly as she stood up suddenly making her chair fall down.

"Kayler..." She could hear the hoarse voice of her grandfather calling out to her but she was too happy to respond.

"Honey..." Kayler's grandmother followed suit as she hugged her husband with renewed vigor.

After both of them had hugged him and calmed down, they took a seat on the edge of the bed right at the foot of Kayler's grandfather. They were lucky that the bed was big enough to contain all of them.

"What happened to you, grandpa?" Kayler asked her grandfather in a soft tone which made her grandfather sigh weakly.

"I forgot how weak my body is and went too far, nothing important..." Her grandfather said as he closed his eyes briefly.

It was obvious that he was still tired but he looked like he wanted to say something.Having thought of a great idea, Kayler spoke up.

"How about I go make some porridge? It won't take that long."

"That'd be lovely, thank you." Her grandmother thanked her with a smile.

Kayler had always loved her grandmother's smile, even when she was young.

With their approval, Kayler quickly went down to the kitchen but was stopped when she accidentally bumped into a worker.

"Sorry..." Kayler apologized briefly and wanted to start going to the kitchen but paused as she noticed what the girl was holding.

"It's ok, no need to apologize..." The girl was about to say something else but was stopped by Kayler.

"Wait...what are you using that for?" She asked.

"A guest is arriving soon, we're preparing!" The worker answered with an excited smile.

A guest?

Kayer thought once she reached the kitchen. Maybe the guest was an old friend of her grandfather or something similar.

Kayler decided that she wouldn't waste any more time thinking of irrelevant matters as she started to make two plates of porridge. One for her grandfather and the other for her grandmother.

It was a pity that her mother couldn't come, she had important matters to deal with and couldn't make it.

Once she was done with the porridge, she placed the two plates on a tray and asked another worker to help her take it upstairs as she cleaned up the kitchen a bit. It didn't take long before she started going upstairs. It was just porridge she was making, not a really difficult or messy dish so the kitchen wasn't as messy as one would imagine it to be.

"But are you sure Kayler would agree?"

Kayler's hands stopped right above the door handle as soon as she heard her grandmother say that.

What wouldn't she agree on?

Were they hiding something from her?

Kayler wasn't so sure so she continued to listen in through the other side of the door.

"As much as I hate to admit it, she has no choice unless she wants to see her family and our company go up in flames," Her grandfather said with a sigh at the beginning.

Their conversation was extremely vague and Kayler couldn't understand what they were talking about but she knew it had something to do with her.

"Yes but... why would he suddenly bring back the marriage agreement between both of our families?" Her grandmother asked no one in particular.

Marriage?

They wanted her to get married?

Kayler at that moment didn't know how to feel.

Should she feel happy?

Sad?

Angry?

Or betrayed?

Ever since she had witnessed her parents' failed marriage she hasn't been interested in anything marriage related and they knew that.

So why are they still talking about her and marriage?

Kayler was so absorbed in her thoughts that she didn't notice the heavy sounds of footsteps coming closer toward her or the fact that the door was slowly opening.

"Miss. Harper, what are you doing..?"

Kayler instantly felt goosebumps on her skin, she knew that voice.

Turning around slowly, Kayler cursed her bad luck.

She was correct.

"Mr. Fernando..."
