NEW YEARS PARTY - PART I

"Thanks," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I wasn't sure about it, as you can see." I pointed out to the room.

Mark's gaze didn't waver. He took a step closer, his voice quieter this time. "You should be sure."

The intensity in his words sent a ripple of something dangerous through me. I forced myself to take a breath, to look up at him despite the warmth creeping along my skin.

"Thanks," I said again, my voice softer now. "That means a lot."

For a moment, neither of us moved, the silence stretching between us, charged and heavy. Mark shifted slightly, clearing his throat, and the spell broke.

"I should probably let you finish getting ready, I'll wear a blue sweater, to match your dress, Linda's orders." he said, his usual composed tone returning.

"Right," I said quickly, taking a step back. "And... thanks again. For your input."
