Chapter 10: I Can’t Save You

Luo Li sneered as he heard this, "Really? But have you fulfilled your responsibilities as a father to your daughter? When you divorced your ex-wife, was there no scandal involved?"

"Huh?" The chubby boss thought for a moment and regretfully said, "Could it be that my ex-wife is haunting me?"

It turned out that his ex-wife had passed away, which explained the significant change in his fate.

"It seems you've already figured that out yourself. But let me tell you, the big black dog that bit you isn't your ex-wife; the yellow dog is your enemy, and the black dog is a warning from fate. Think about it, isn't the Kitchen God black? The yellow dog didn't bite you; the real issue lies within yourself."

"So, am I doomed? Can I donate money to build roads and bridges, or release animals to gain merit?" The chubby boss grasped at straws.

"When did your ex-wife pass away?"

"Three years ago," the chubby boss replied.

"If it was three years ago, why is it happening now? Did you ever visit your ex-wife's home to check on your daughter?" Luo Li continued to analyze for him.

The chubby boss looked a bit guilty, "My ex-wife used to keep me from seeing my daughter, and I was busy. My daughter wasn't attached to me. After my ex-wife passed, I thought about bringing the child to live with me, but my daughter was about to enter high school, and the school was far away. She didn't get along with my current wife, and they argued all the time, giving me headaches. So, I sent her back to her grandmother's house. Even though I tried to send her money later, she wouldn't take it!"

"So you think you're off the hook as a father?" Luo Li was already getting angry.

"Here's what you should do: go back and check on your daughter. If she's in trouble and you help her out, maybe your ex-wife will stop haunting your dreams." Luo Li just wanted to get away, so he offered this advice as a last resort.

After thinking for a moment, Luo Li continued, "I can tell by looking at your eyes; you're destined to have only one son, yet you have two. Could this be a case of karma? If donating to build bridges and roads could offset sins, wouldn't everyone be free to do bad things?" Luo Li added sarcastically.

The chubby boss hadn't fully grasped what he said, but when it finally hit him, he shouted in shock, "What did you say? Only one son?"

"You don't have to believe me; it might make you feel better." Luo Li felt he had said enough and was ready to leave.

The chubby boss hurried over to grab Luo Li's arm, pleading desperately, "Master, you can see so much, I really admire you. Regardless of how many children I'm destined to have, you wouldn't want to see him become fatherless, would you?"

"Heh, fatherless children are pitiful, but wasn't your daughter fatherless after your divorce? And didn't she still manage to survive just fine?" Luo Li had completely lost his patience. He tried to pull his hand away, but the chubby boss held on tightly.

"Master, you can't just walk away after meeting me. I won't lie to you, a month ago, I wouldn't have believed you at all. Not only have I dreamt of being bitten by a dog, but for the past month, I've also been dreaming of my ex-wife demanding my life. But I swear, I didn't kill her!" The chubby boss began to use every trick in the book to keep Luo Li from leaving.

Dreaming of his ex-wife demanding his life, yet not even thinking of checking on the daughter she left behind—Luo Li truly wished he'd just die already.

"What do you mean, 'You can't just walk away'? Did you pee on me this morning, or do you think I enjoy being peed on?"

The chubby boss immediately began slapping himself, "I'm worthless; I'm an idiot for not recognizing who you are." He continued slapping himself without stopping.

It seemed he truly valued his life more than anything else, even more than his dignity.

Luo Li just stood there watching him slap himself. He didn't try to stop him. Did he think the pity tactic would work? Luo Li had always believed in going with the flow of fate. Even Bao Puzi (Ge Hong) studied the art of immortality his entire life, yet in the end, he left behind the words "Follow the Way of Nature, Accept Fate" as a warning to future generations.
