Under Xia Lei's guidance, Xia Yu drove in a certain direction. Since this area was by the sea and sparsely populated, there were hardly any cars passing by at night.
A cool sea breeze blew in through the window, refreshing Xia Yu.
At that moment, Xia Yu noticed someone chasing ahead. He looked closely and saw a middle-aged man, drenched and carrying someone on his back, running in front of him. Behind him, a group of people wielding weapons was desperately pursuing him.
Due to Xia Yu's high beam lights, the intense glare made it difficult for the pursuers to see, causing them to momentarily stop their chase.
The unusual scene also caught Xia Lei's attention. Instinctively, he straightened up and focused on the people in front of the car, saying, "Xia Yu, don't get involved. There are many black boats landing around here. The person being chased is soaked and probably escaped from human traffickers. These kinds of things happen all the time. Let's go; it's not worth getting into trouble."
"Got it!" Xia Yu responded, pressing the accelerator to speed away. He had no desire to get involved in trouble and prioritized his own safety.
As Xia Yu pressed the gas pedal, the drenched middle-aged man suddenly waved frantically and shouted, "Stop! Save my son! Save my son!"
The desperation and urgency in his voice cut through the engine noise, making Xia Yu frown. He hadn't expected that the man was carrying his son and was being chased.
The crucial detail was that the man wasn't speaking Cantonese but rather Mandarin, a language Xia Yu had been familiar with recently despite its strong accent.
Combining this with Xia Lei's earlier comments, it was likely that the man came from the mainland across the sea. But why was he carrying his son?
For a moment, Xia Yu hesitated about whether to stop. Just then, the middle-aged man's face became clearly visible under the lights. His eyes were filled with anxiety and pain as he frequently glanced at his son and then looked pleadingly at Xia Yu's car. The sincere look made Xia Yu's heart waver, and he instinctively hit the brakes.
This time, Xia Lei didn't dissuade Xia Yu but looked at the middle-aged man with a complex expression. However, he remained vigilant, unfastening his seatbelt and clenching his fists, prepared in case the man posed a threat.
The car screeched to a halt in front of the middle-aged man, and Xia Yu said, "Get in!"
Xia Yu used Mandarin, the same language he had used earlier with Xia Lei.
The middle-aged man's face lit up with joy. He hurriedly opened the back door and placed his son inside.
As he was about to get in himself, the three people chasing him rushed over. Without hesitation and unburdened by his son, the middle-aged man charged at the armed pursuers with bare hands.
Xia Yu and Xia Lei watched as the middle-aged man moved like a tiger, quickly throwing punches and kicks. Within about a second, the pursuers were all knocked to the ground.
The middle-aged man's expression remained unchanged. He didn't continue attacking but swiftly returned to the car, shut the door behind him, and offered a grateful smile to Xia Yu and Xia Lei, which seemed like a stark contrast to his previous cold demeanor. Xia Yu wondered if it was an illusion.
"Thank you, benefactor. Sorry for the trouble. My son is seriously ill and unconscious. Please take him to the hospital. Please, I beg you," the middle-aged man said, now noticing that the drivers were young. He looked at Xia Yu with a pleading expression.
The man spoke in Mandarin because he had heard Xia Yu speaking in the same language earlier, leading him to instinctively seek help from Xia Yu.
Xia Yu nodded and agreed, then pressed the accelerator, driving quickly towards the distance. He occasionally glanced at the middle-aged man and his unconscious son in the rearview mirror.
The son appeared to be around ten years old, with a pale face and a thin frame, suggesting malnutrition and poor development. His chest barely rose and fell, making Xia Yu almost think he was dead.
From what he had seen, the middle-aged man was quite skilled. The chase was likely due to the danger of carrying his son. Xia Lei's tense posture and vigilant state indicated that the man was potentially dangerous.
However, Xia Yu believed the man wouldn't turn violent, given his son's condition. For the sake of his son's life, the man wouldn't dare act out.
Moreover, sensing Xia Lei's vigilance, the middle-aged man maintained a harmless smile, seemingly wanting to prove he meant no harm.
Now that the middle-aged man was in the car, there was no turning back. Xia Yu had to take him to the hospital.
While driving, the middle-aged man occasionally looked at his son and pleaded in heavily accented Mandarin for Xia Yu to take them to the hospital.
"Hold on. We're going to the hospital now," Xia Yu said in Mandarin, slightly turning his head to address the middle-aged man, and sped up the car in response to his hopeful and grateful gaze.
Once they reached the city, Xia Yu no longer needed directions from Xia Lei. He quickly headed to the nearest hospital.
Soon, Xia Yu arrived at the hospital. He parked the car at the roadside and told the middle-aged man that they had arrived. The man hurriedly got out, carrying his unconscious son, and followed Xia Yu into the hospital.
In the hospital lobby, seeing Xia Yu and his group rushing in with a child, a nurse immediately approached and asked, "What's the situation?"
"Save my son! He's unconscious!" The middle-aged man, visibly agitated, said to the nurse.
However, due to the middle-aged man's heavy accent and use of Mandarin, the nurse seemed puzzled but did not question further, as she noticed the child's critical condition.
The nurse instructed the man to place the child on a stretcher and called out to other hospital staff. She then began basic examinations on the child.
Soon, several other nurses arrived, and a doctor in a white coat came out of the office.
