Taking His Reward

I let out a small hum of agreement, sanking deeper into Arec's embrace. His warmth, his steady presence—it was enough to make the worries about Joanne fade, at least for now. Whatever her true intentions were, I would figure them out soon enough.

The gentle creak of the guest room door opening caught my attention, and I turned just in time to see my mother stepping inside. She paused for a moment, taking in the sight of Arec and me standing together, his arms wrapped securely around me. A knowing smile touched her lips.

"Kate left?" she asked, her voice soft but laced with that familiar motherly concern.

I nodded, still not moving from Arec's hold. "Yes mom."

She gave me a small, approving glance—one that wordlessly told me she was glad I wasn't alone in my thoughts tonight. Then, with a tired sigh, she stretched her arms slightly. "I need to get some rest. My body isn't as forgiving as it used to be, and I might have overexerted myself today."
