Chapter 247: Reaper Death Seal???

The development of Ice Release: Goddess of Dawn's Mercy not only required a vast amount of chakra but also necessitated the absorption of ambient cold energy.

There was clearly no existing jutsu that could directly absorb cold from the surroundings, so Tōshirō planned to take a step back—by finding a jutsu that absorbed chakra and then using that as a foundation for his own development.

After all, if he truly had to use Ice Release: Goddess of Dawn's Mercy in the future—a high-level S-rank technique—the surrounding environment would already be transformed by Ice Release: Ice Age, which itself is created using chakra.

He wasn't sure if absorbing natural energy directly was possible, but fundamentally, the cold energy radiating from that environment would still be related to chakra. So absorbing that chill would essentially be another form of chakra absorption.

"Why are you asking about this?" Tsunade couldn't figure out what Tōshirō was thinking and looked puzzled. "If you're short on chakra, I can just transfer some to you when the time comes."

"That's not the same."

Tōshirō shook his head and explained his thought process behind developing Ice Release: Goddess of Dawn's Mercy. The chakra Tsunade transferred to him would at most help activate the technique—but to maintain it, he'd still need to draw in cold energy from the surrounding area, which she couldn't provide.

After hearing his explanation, Tsunade said bluntly, "What a hassle."

This jutsu placed harsh demands not only on the environment but also on chakra usage.

Tōshirō shrugged helplessly. "Can't be helped—it's an S-rank jutsu, after all. The development process is bound to be complicated."

"It's not just the development that's complicated—even using it sounds like a huge pain." Tsunade thought for a moment and offered a suggestion. "Why not just use a Tailed Beast Ball?"

"Tailed Beast Ball?"

"From what I understand, the Tailed Beast Ball has earth-shattering power. Since you're a perfect jinchūriki, it shouldn't be difficult for you to pull that off, right? So why bother going through all this trouble to develop some new jutsu that might not even be as powerful?"

Her suggestion wasn't unreasonable.

In fact, most jinchūriki did exactly that.

Compared to conventional ninjutsu, those derived from tailed beast power were rarer—and more powerful.

Tōshirō understood this perspective and even agreed with it.

But understanding didn't mean he'd follow the same path. If he did, how would he be any different from an ordinary jinchūriki? He had his own ideas.

Tōshirō shook his head. "That's not how I see it. Sure, the Tailed Beast Ball is powerful—but in the end, it's still the tailed beast's power.

"I've always believed that a true jinchūriki should use the tailed beast's power—but not become dependent on it.

"Instead, they should use it as a foundation to reach even greater heights. That's what it means to be a true ninja."

In the original story, the main character had already demonstrated the ideal way to utilize a tailed beast's power—a perfect example to follow.

Tōshirō could just copy that "homework."

Moreover, using a perfect Tailed Beast Ball came with a drawback—it required him to fully transform into the tailed beast. It wasn't that doing so was bad, but the transformation process consumed an enormous amount of chakra.

Against lower-level opponents, tailed beast transformation was undeniably strong. But in high-level battles, a tailed beast could become a giant target. And considering that the Five-Tails wasn't as ferocious as the Nine-Tails, Tōshirō was even more convinced that he needed to walk his own unique path—one focused on the development of Ice Release.

It wasn't just that Ice Release was the ninjutsu he used most often—it was also the most well-rounded one in his arsenal.

It could be used offensively, defensively, and for control.

Though it wasn't the strongest in any one area, it was balanced across the board.

Other release types all had more obvious weaknesses to some degree.

"Well, okay…" Seeing that Tōshirō was as stubborn as an ox and couldn't be dragged back, Tsunade had no choice but to support him.

Tōshirō urged, "Hey, don't just talk—help me think. Are there any ninjutsu that absorb chakra?"

"Doesn't your clan have one?" Tsunade countered.

"Never asked, but I'm guessing not." Tōshirō knew his clan's attitude all too well.

In theory, the Uchiha clan could replicate any jutsu as long as they were willing to lower their pride—aside from exclusive secret techniques and kekkei genkai, of course.

But unfortunately, everyone in his clan was unbearably arrogant—unlike Kakashi, that shameless ninja who would copy any jutsu he saw.

Otherwise, why do you think only Kakashi, with just one Sharingan, earned the title "Copy Ninja," while the Uchiha clan never had such a reputation? In the end, it's just because they couldn't bear the shame.

To them, copying ninjutsu was basically an indirect admission that their own techniques weren't as good as someone else's.

So, Tōshirō pinned his hopes on Tsunade. Considering her unique status and position, she must have come across a lot of ninjutsu in her time.

Seeing the hopeful look in her boyfriend's eyes, Tsunade gave in reluctantly: "Don't look at me like that. Fine, I'll try to remember, okay?"

With that, she fell into thought, clearly trying hard to recall.

Tōshirō watched her quietly, and thankfully, Tsunade didn't let him down. She actually remembered a jutsu. Looking up, she said, "Got it. Back when I was learning ninjutsu from my grandmother, I once saw a jutsu that could absorb chakra, I think."

"Nani?!"

There really was one?

Tōshirō got excited. "What jutsu?"

Tsunade thought for a moment, then playfully stuck out her tongue: "I forgot…"

"You forgot?"

Tōshirō froze, then gave her a look of disbelief. "Are you messing with me?"

What kind of international joke was this?

A jutsu that could absorb chakra—that kind of technique had to be incredibly powerful and practical.

Wouldn't a normal person learn it immediately?

Tsunade pouted. "Who's messing with you? I really forgot."

"A jutsu that useful—and you didn't learn it back then? You wasteful woman!"

Tōshirō grabbed Tsunade's shoulders and started shaking her for emphasis.

"Stop shaking me!" Tsunade, straining her memory, finally managed to recall something: "I remember now! I think it was called something like… Reaper… something?"

"Reaper…?" Tōshirō asked reflexively. "And…?"

"I can't remember the rest."

Tōshirō frowned.

Hearing that name, he instinctively thought of a certain jutsu.

Reaper Death Seal?

No, that can't be it.

Isn't that an S-rank sealing technique?

And those words—"Reaper" and "Death"—don't exactly sound like something related to chakra absorption. How does a chakra-absorbing technique even connect to something like that?

Tōshirō was thoroughly confused.

"Hmph, you can't even remember a single jutsu. What good are you?" he said with a look of disdain.

"What's with that attitude?" Tsunade pouted in annoyance. "Fine, I'll go ask Grandma about it for you."

That was much more pleasing to Tōshirō's ears. "Oh, now that's more like it."

Tsunade continued, "And while I'm at it, I'll see if she's willing to pass the jutsu on to you."

Tōshirō beamed. "Tsunade, you're the best!"

Tsunade gritted her teeth. "You really can change your face faster than anyone."

Tōshirō smirked. "Haven't you heard? Men can change their mood faster than flipping a page."

Tsunade corrected him. "That's women, actually."

Tōshirō waved it off. "Same difference."

"For real though," Tsunade said, "Can I go back to beating you like I used to? It's been a while, and my hands are kinda itching."

Tōshirō patted her head and tried to reason with her: "Nooo, don't. Girls should be gentle and caring to be cute."

Tsunade: "…"

Tōshirō asked curiously, "But seriously, a jutsu that can absorb chakra is obviously really useful. Why didn't you learn it back then?"

Tsunade thought for a bit. "I think there was some annoying limitation? That's probably why I didn't bother in the end."
