It has just been five hours since Emily was appointed as William's personal maid and life had never been more difficult. She does not understand why and how someone could be that cruel. She was heading towards the kitchen the seventh time to bake cookies for him-cookies she was sure he did not need or want.
She walked slowly, tired and frustrated.
"Hey," A musical female voice called to her.
Emily turned to see Katie, William's younger sister smiling at her.
"Hi," she replied, forcing a smile with all the strength she could muster.
"You are Emily, right? Will's PM yeah?"
"PM as in personal maid?" Emily asked.
Katie giggled. "Yeah, sorry, It sounds disrespectful to call people maids. I hope that makes sense?" Katie asked, a little shy.
Emily was starting to like the blonde girl that stood before her. "It makes a lot of sense," she answered with a smile.
"Sorry about my brother," Katie said, twisting her fingers nervously. "He is not usually like this, he took a special dislike to you."
"Yeah, I noticed," Emily mumbled rolling her eyes. "He is a grumpy old man." Emily blurted before she could stop herself. "I am sorry, I did not mean it like that." Emily's eyes were wise with regret and fear and it made Katie chuckle.
"Hey, no worries, Willy is grumpy, we all know that."
Emily sighed in relief. "For your information, I thought you were going to get me fired," she said.
"She might not get you fired but I will get you fired."
Emily shook in fear as the calm bass vibrating voice she had grown familiar with interrupted.
"I gave you an instruction and it had nothing to do with chatting."
"I will be on my way," Emily mumbled and started slowly downstairs to where the kitchen was.
She could hear Katie scolding her brother for the way he treated her but she could not care less. She walked into the kitchen to find Sarah and one other maid clutching around a crying maid. She went over to see what was happening. Sarah told her that the maid crying was harassed by Kelvin.
Emily suggested they report the matter but they all shus her.
"Are you crazy? You cannot sue the Reeds family, you will just be ruining your life and that of your family." Sarah had replied to her in a harsh whisper.
Emily thought about what Sarah said for a minute and saw truths in it. "Okay, what about we tell her father or his mother, surely they will do something about it." She suggested.
The maids only looked at her as though she was crazy.
Even as she removed the already-baked cookies and placed them in a tray she could still remember the look in the maid's eyes--hurt, pain, low self-esteem, and self-disgust. Her hatred for the Reeds family doubled. She never liked the rich and the experience she is happening now will only fuel the already existing hatred.
She knocked on William's door with that tray of cookies in her arms. She felt proud of herself, this was the first time she had remembered to knock on his door since she came to the mansion. She had walked in on him dressing earlier and even though he scolded her and told her she must knock any time she wanted to enter she barged into his room a few minutes later spilling the cup of hot coffee he had asked her to bring on his clothes.
"Come in." His calm voice called from inside.
She gently opened the door and carefully walked to his study table where he sat. "Your cookie." She announced.
"Drop it on the center table." He snapped. "Should I drop all I am doing just because you made cookies?"
Emily glared at him. She turned and walked to the center table and kept the tray. She turned to see Williams staring at her in disbelief. "Do you have a problem with apologizing any time you do something wrong?" He asked, his voice sounding shocked and frustrated.
"No sir, I do not have a problem with it," she replied and walked out the door.
Williams followed her. "You should never walk out on me when I am talking to you!" His voice was calm, almost a whisper but painful, it sent chills down Emily's spine.
Emily stopped and turned to face him without saying a word.
"Do you not have something to say?" Williams snapped.
"Good Afternoon?"
Williams stared at her his face gone hard with anger. "Are you not supposed to apologize?!"
"Willy, will you leave my friend alone?" Katie interrupted as she came out of her room.
Williams' hard face was softened when he heard the voice of his sister.
"Well, your 'friend' is being difficult." He said his eyes were not leaving Emily.
Katie walked over and turned her brother to face her. "Common Willy, leave the girly alone."
Williams smiled at his sister. "Alright." "But teach her how to use her magic words okay?" he said, messing her hair.
"Hey, don't do that!" She shouted as she attempted to also mess up his hair, making him run to his room.
Emily mouthed a thank you to Katie.
"Come here you grumpy old brother," Katie said as she followed Williams into his room.
Emily took in a deep breath and cleaned the start tear that made its way down her cheeks.
She stared down the stairs and was met by Kelvin. "Hey pretty," He said blocking her part. "How is my brother treating you?"
"Oh Lord, what kind of punishment is this?" She mumbled.
"Good Afternoon Sir Kelvin, she greeted without a smile.
"Hear how appealing your voice is." He said, playing with a strand of her hair. "I want to hear you moan my name on my bed Emmy..." Don't you want that?"
"Kelvin!" A strong commanding voice she did not recognize called.
Both Emily and Kelvin turned to see Me. Reeds. Kelvin quickly straighten his posture and glared at Emily in disgust. "Go now and continue with your work!" He yelled at her.
Emily did not respond. She walked past Kelvin and continued at the pace she was using.
"Hey stop!" Mr. Reeds called to her.
Emily turned."Sir," her voice held no fear, she was indifferent, pulling up with Williams had drained all the goody-goody in her.
"Who are you?" He asked.
"A maid, William's personal maid." She replied.
"I have not seen you here before."
"I am new."
"Oh," he mumbled.
Emily turned and continued down the stairs.
"Maid girl," Mr. Reed called again.
Emily clenched her fist together. 'How many hours will it take before I can get down these stairs!' she thought.
"Yes Sir," she said under clenching teeth
"Stay away from my sons. You are here to serve us and get paid, not filthy with them."
Emily had no idea where she got the strength to remain silent and not risk her job by replying to Mr. Reeds but she was happy she left after just nodding her head.
"What have I gotten myself into?" She asked herself aloud as she stared at herself in the mirror in the maid's restroom. "Mama, I hope all these things I am going through are worth it."
