Just as Sorn was adjusting to the overwhelming kindness of the villagers, he noticed a little boy standing a short distance away, staring at him with wide, unblinking eyes. Sorn felt his gaze like a weight pressing down on him, but before he could react, the boy suddenly pointed at him and shouted,

"Ha! The guy has different-colored eyes!"

The words cut through the noise like a knife.

The murmur of conversation around them faded, replaced by a collective shift of attention. More children, drawn by the outburst, came running over, their curiosity burning bright.

Sorn stiffened.

They surrounded him in an instant, craning their necks, standing on tiptoe, trying to get a better look.

"Wow, it's true!" one child gasped.

"Let me see! Let me see!" another tugged at his sleeve insistently.

"You're like a prince in a fairy tale book I read!" a little girl declared, her voice full of wonder.
