Part-Time Job

A week had quickly passed since Katherine's return to the past. With each passing day, Katherine slowly got used to her new life. Within these seven days, she'd managed to complete four missions.

While there were complications during the mission, she'd found her way around them and ended up completing them.

Her first mission, which was getting accustomed to the new timeline she found herself, was completed three hours before the mission's deadline.

Thinking back at how it had ended, Katherine couldn't help but smile gently. Her mother-in-law had returned from a party on that day, a few hours after Zeke had finished beating her to his satisfaction and Katherine took it upon herself to welcome the woman warmly.

For someone who has always hated Katherine, she was surprised at the girl's actions. She still found a way to deal critical verbal attacks but Katherine didn't think much of it. She simply apologised each time the woman insulted.

When she was done and headed back to the room, she got a notification from the system informing her that the mission had been completed. She'd become accustomed to the past to some extent.

She was adapting. However, what surprised her after the mission was completed, was the unlocking of her balance as well as the addition of the option to withdraw.

At first, Katherine didn't understand it but after her first trial, she became familiar with the withdrawal function.

She had requested a withdrawal of twenty percent of her balance and within a split second, she received a credit alert on her device from an unknown account.

Curious as to whether it was real or not, she decided to test it on an online shipping platform and ended up purchasing a bag worth a thousand dollars. It was the most expensive bag she'd purchased since her marriage and the money hadn't been given to her by her husband. It was by theSystem.

After that, she'd managed to complete three more missions and ended up receiving an average of  $20,000 for each mission completed which brought her balance to a fair bit.

Seeing how she'd accumulated $80,000 within a week, a figure that would've taken her over six months to acquire through a job, Katherine became convinced. The system really made her growth steady and speedy.

However, despite having close to $80,000 on her balance, she didn't try to purchase a thing or even withdraw from the balance. Her last experience after receiving the bag was enough to warn her.

Zeke had been around and seeing the bag's luxurious design and delivery, he asked how she got it. When she told him she bought it herself, he began to threaten her to confess before he beat her unconscious again.

After checking through her phone, he discovered the alert from an unknown account number and pounced on Katherine, accusing her of receiving money from the man she was cheating on him with.

Since then, Katherine avoided purchasing catchy things and also completely refrained from withdrawing.

However, today, it will all come to an end. Today was the day she would resume her new job.

The System had provided her with a new mission. A part-time job at a small mart.

Having discussed it with Zeke, she was surprised to find him agree but she knew why he did.

When she first made the suggestion to him two days ago, he'd pounced on her again, claiming that she wanted to use it as an excuse to freely cheat on him.

Seeing that he wouldn't agree, she took a different approach. Stacie.

Katherine went ahead to warm up to Stacie, and then informed her of her decision to start a part-time job that only required five hours of her time daily during weekdays and seven hours during the weekends.

Knowing that it spelt an opportunity for her to spend more time with Zeke in Katherine's absence, Stacie had promised Katherine to help convince Zeke into permitting her to go and she indeed did that.

A day ago, Katherine did apply at a few marts and instantly got accepted at one of them.

She'd thought of telling them before about how she would like a few days to decide but then it struck her. The faster she grew, the easier life would be for her. Besides, the system wasn't even going to let her slack as there was a deadline for the completion of each mission.

A smile appeared on Katherine's beautiful face as she mentally commanded. 'Status.'

She'd come to learn that the command didn't have to be uttered verbally.

At her command, the panel she'd grown accustomed to, appeared in front of her and her smile deepened. She was alone inside her matrimonial bedroom after all, so there was no need to hide a thing.

The deadline was in eight days but the mission said she had to accumulate a certain amount in seven days. This meant that she had an extra day probably for resting or something else. Resting however, didn't seem like an option to Katherine. With a smirk and a chuckle, she zipped her pants and tied her hair into a bun. "No pain, no gain."

The young lady, dressed in a pair of black pants and red shirt walked out of her room. Her destination was the mart a few miles away. Her new place of work, Lefty's Mart.

Upon arrival, almost thirty minutes after she left home, she arrived at the place of work with a smile that mirrored her freedom, albeit a temporary one as she still had to go back home after her five hour shift was over.

It was as she last saw it. A small, rectangular convenience store with a flat roof. Eight parking spots out front, two reserved near the entrance. Brick exterior with large windows.

"Welcome, Miss Katherine. It's an honour to have such beauty work for us." As she walked into the mart, the owner was the first person she saw standing just a few metres from the door. He was of average height with brown hair and a receding hairline along with brown eyes. His hand was stretched forward, attempting a handshake with his new employee.

Inside, Katherine could see a checkout counter, aisles of snacks and groceries, a deli on the left, and bright fluorescent lighting throughout.

"Thank you for having me." She also stretched forth her hand, holding his firmly with a warm smile that warmed the owner's heart.

After the handshake, the man dipped one hand inside the pocket of his short cargo pants and pulled out a small bottle of sanitiser. "Sorry, it's a habit of mine. If you don't mind." He apologized as he poured a little on his hand and rubbed his palms together after pushing the bottle back into his pocket.

"I understand." Katherine said with a nod. "It's nothing to be offended about." Even though that was what she said, she was looking at her hand, trying to find a trace of diet that might have remained there even after her hour long preparation.

"Please, come with me." The owner gestured as he headed toward the counter and Katherine had no option but to follow.
