Chapter 134: The Rats Go Mad
Before long, Li Yanhong drove up in a military truck.
Wu Heng sat in the truck with several skeletons, moving slowly forward while the rest of the skeleton army flanked the truck, advancing together.
They were heading to the commercial street to gather some much-needed supplies.
Relying entirely on skeletons to carry everything back would be too troublesome; the best option was to drive a truck there.
The army moved forward mightily along the main road, easily crushing any zombies drawn to the sound.
The last time Wu Heng led his forces to this commercial street, his skeleton army wasn't as large.
The street had been packed with zombies attracted by the sound systems.
Now, with a much larger skeleton army, he was confident they could fight the zombies head-on.
At the very least, he planned to loot the jewelry stores and banks before heading to the prison.
It would be a waste not to.
"Ever killed a zombie?" Wu Heng asked.
Li Yanhong kept her eyes on the road, "Yes, the first one I killed was my father. He turned into a zombie, bit one of our customers, and tried to attack me, so I killed him with a wrench."
The atmosphere inside the truck suddenly grew heavy.
Wu Heng didn't say much more.
In a world overrun by zombies, everyone who survived had lost family.
Once you accepted that fact, there wasn't much point in dwelling on it.
"Besides that, have you killed any others?" Wu Heng continued.
Li Yanhong nodded, "Yes, we killed some zombies during supply runs, but nowhere near as many as you."
"Mm, when we reach the prison, stay on guard. Being too friendly isn't always a good thing, especially in situations like this." Wu Heng advised.
"Got it, I'll be careful." Li Yanhong then asked, "What resources are we mainly looking for in the commercial street?"
"We'll take whatever we can find—clothes, shoes, anything useful."
The truck continued its slow journey forward.
Li Yanhong pointed at a red sign ahead and said, "This place used to have the best spicy hot pot. I'd come here whenever I had free time, but then I heard it got shut down. Something was added to the food that made it addictive."
Several restaurants were clustered around the commercial street.
They had formed a small food district.
The two of them looked through the truck windows at the now-ruined restaurants.
Suddenly, a dark shadow darted across the entrance of one of the buildings.
"I think I just saw a black cat run by," Li Yanhong remarked.
Wu Heng shook his head, "That wasn't a black cat."
His heightened perception, both in vision and insight, surpassed that of an ordinary person.
In the split second that the shadow passed, he noticed certain features.
What Li Yanhong thought was a cat was actually a rat, the size of a feral cat.
Hissss~ Squeak squeak squeak!
Suddenly, a piercing screech came from the direction of the restaurant.
A swarm of dark shadows poured out of several restaurants, like a flood of dirty black water.
The few zombies in their path barely had time to roar before they were swallowed by the black mass.
They disappeared without a trace.
A horde of rats, each the size of a wild cat.
Li Yanhong shivered, the hair on her arms standing up in terror.
Wu Heng's eyes widened in surprise at the scene unfolding before him.
During his last scout of the commercial street, a few cat-sized rats had attacked him, but there were only a handful.
The skeletons had quickly dispatched them.
But now, there were so many.
Whether through reproduction or mutation, these rats had multiplied and grown.
These rats weren't zombies; their fur was sleek and shiny. They were still living creatures.
While people were starving, these rats were thriving.
"Prepare for battle," Wu Heng ordered the 'Big Head Skeleton' sitting in the back.
Clatter, clatter~!
The skeleton warriors flanking the truck halted, turning to face the oncoming rat horde.
They raised their cleavers, the sound of bone grinding against bone filling the air.
"Stay in the truck, don't get out."
Wu Heng gave the order, then stepped out of the truck with a few skeletons.
He quickly moved to the front, casting [Grease Spell] onto the pavement.
A slick of grease spread across the asphalt, causing the rats to slip and slide as they advanced.
Seeing the opportunity, Wu Heng followed up with a [Fireball Spell], hurling it into the midst of the rat horde.
Boom~!
The fireball exploded among the rats, sending flames in all directions, igniting the grease on the ground.
Whoosh~! A wall of fire shot up several meters high.
The blaze engulfed a section of the rat horde.
Squeak squeak squeak~!
The rats screamed, their high-pitched cries piercing the air.
A large number of rats were consumed by the flames, but the rest of the horde split into two groups, avoiding the fire and flanking around it.
They continued charging toward the skeleton army.
"Damn, what's gotten into them?" Wu Heng cursed.
The skeletons were not living creatures; by nature, the rats shouldn't have been attacking them like this.
But the rats were getting closer, and the situation was escalating fast.
Wu Heng had no choice but to order, "Attack!"
Clatter, clatter~!
The skeletons launched their charge, wielding cleavers as they met the advancing rat horde head-on.
A clash of white bones and black rats erupted in a fierce battle.
Crack~! Thud, thud, thud~!
The sounds of bones snapping and flesh being cleaved filled the air.
The entire area became a chaotic battleground.
"Xiaoxiao, go check what's going on up ahead. Why are these rats going crazy?" Wu Heng summoned Xiaoxiao.
"Uncle, I'm scared. These rats are disgusting," Xiaoxiao whimpered, hiding behind Wu Heng.
"Cough~! Hey, they're just regular rats. We're adults now, no more being scared of little things like this."
It was odd to see someone who wasn't afraid of zombies but feared rats.
"But I'm still scared!"
"Fly high above them, keep your distance, and take a look inside to see if there are any other monsters. Then come right back." Wu Heng urged her.
Xiaoxiao hesitated for a moment but eventually nodded, "Okay, fine!"
Her translucent form rose into the air, flying toward the restaurant area and slipping inside.
Meanwhile, the skeletons and rats were locked in a chaotic struggle.
The scene was a mess.
The skeletons didn't feel pain and had no vital points like living beings.
But when it came to fighting the rat horde, they were at a disadvantage.
The rats moved low to the ground and were incredibly fast.
The skeletons had to bend down to slash at them, making their movements slow and awkward.
Wu Heng stood near the truck, watching as rats climbed up the skeletons' bones, gnawing at the ribs and chest cavities.
From a distance, it looked like the skeleton army was overwhelming the rat horde, but on closer inspection, the skeletons were dying faster than the rats.
Before long, Xiaoxiao flew back.
"They're all just rats. They've built nests in there."
"Come back, let me see!" Wu Heng commanded.
Xiaoxiao merged with him, showing him the scene inside the restaurant—still more rats.
And even more were crawling out of what looked like sewer entrances, joining the horde and charging toward them.
"Damn, just my luck," Wu Heng cursed.
A simple trip had turned into a battle against a crazed rat horde.
Boom boom boom~!
At that moment, Li Yanhong banged on the truck door, "Look ahead! Zombies are coming!"
Wu Heng looked up to see a massive group of zombies spilling out of the commercial street.
A sea of them poured onto the main road and started rushing in their direction.
Damn it!
