My first day on my new job was April 7th. I scanned the last bit of groceries for the customer before heading over to clock out. I left the building and made my way home and walked through the door. "I'm home, Mel." I say. "Of course you are." Melanie says. "What's that supposed to mean?" I ask. "It's not like our parents are alive. Who else would have walked through the door?" She retorts. "Can you not? I've had a long day." I say. "You worked 4 hours in a supermarket standing still. All you did was move your hands to scan groceries." She said. "I had an 8 hour day at school before that. Shut up." I snap back. "All you do is work or go to Lindsay's. You're never home. We don't even talk anymore." She screamed as tears welled up in her eyes. She ran up the stairs and slammed the door. I let out a sigh and made my way up the stairs into my room. I put on my tux and looked in the mirror. Today was the day of prom. I was obviously going with Lindsay, and we were going to meet James at the school. He didn't have a date, but me and him do everything together. He's like a brother to me. I knocked on Melanie's door and didn't get a response. I told her I was venturing off to prom and would be back around midnight. I left the house and picked Lindsay up from hers, then from there I made my way to the school and picked up James before heading to the park where prom was being held. The three of us walked inside in a fit of laughs and jokes. We were all looking forward to the night ahead. We danced and talked for hours. The time kept passing by. Memories kept being made. It was the most fun I'd had in a while. When there was around an hour left I made my way away from the crowd to use the bathroom. When I came back out Lindsay was standing at the door. "Oh, my God!" I shouted. "You scared me half to death." I said as I recollected myself. "Sorry." Lindsay said in laughter. "You look amazing tonight, Weston. I wanted to thank you for giving me this opportunity." She said. "Are you stupid? You're the one who accepted my request to date. This is all you. It's your night." I say back with a smile. She laughs, and pulls me in for a kiss. She doesn't pull away, and all of my problems seem to leave me. Finally, after what feels like a few minutes, she pulls back. "I love you. I don't know what you're going through, Weston. I'm sorry I don't, really I am. If you ever need anything I'll be here for you." She pulls me in for a hug. This night doesn't even seem real. All of the memories made and the laughter had have been amazing. It's so weird. Both of my parents are gone, but yet I'm able to feel happy moments and experience enjoyable memories. I almost feel guilty. I miss them both so much, but it's time for me to move on. I can't spend my whole life stuck on something that I can't change. I hug Lindsay back and don't let go. She's been my rock in a very hard place.
