The rain was falling harder and harder, making it difficult for the students to watch the game.
For the students without umbrellas, looking up at the sky meant rain water pouring into their eyes. But few students were willing to leave the field and return to the castle.
So the students shielded their eyes with their hands, and struggled to follow the players' swift, swallow-like movements through the downpour.
Suddenly, a sharp whistle sounded. Harry raised his arm high, and circled in the air on his broom. The Gryffindor players cheered and rushed toward him.
Then Madam Hooch loudly announced Gryffindor's victory, and the stands erupted in applause and cheers.
Malfoy stood nearby and watched the scene with a pale face. The captain of the Slytherin team flew over and shouted something angrily at him.
"That was amazing! Did you see him catch the Golden Snitch, Remus? It was incredible! He snatched it right from beside the other Seeker's ear!"
Sirius joined in with shouts and applause, clapping enthusiastically. Although he couldn't see him, Wade was sure Sirius had jumped up and down several times.
"Wade, who's that clumsy Slytherin Seeker?" Sirius asked loudly.
"Draco Malfoy," Wade replied.
"Lucius Malfoy's son?" Sirius sneered and muttered, "That cunning snake!"
Then he shouted even louder, "Great job, Harry! Knock that Malfoy off his broom!"
"Shut up, Sirius!" Lupin said irritably. "Do you want everyone to notice you're here with all that shouting?"
There were no students near them, but one student in the front rows had already turned back, and was curiously looking around.
Seeing only Wade behind him, the student gave a polite smile, as if thinking he'd misheard.
Sirius turned back to Lupin and said relaxedly:
"Remus, didn't Harry look just like he did back in fourth year? I remember James showing off in front of Lily, flying right up to her… only to be knocked off his broom by Snape…"
Suddenly, shouts rose from the crowd, and they quickly turned to look.
The players of the two teams had a dispute in mid-air. A large Slytherin player hurled a Bludger, knocking Wood off his broom. The twins sped toward the others on their brooms, while the girls from the crowd screamed.
Dumbledore extended his hand just in time. From a distance, he halted Wood's fall just before he hit the ground.
"Stop it! All of you, stop right now!"
Madam Hooch, like an enraged eagle, stormed into the midst of the scuffling students and yelled furiously, "Whoever keeps fighting will be banned from the game!"
The players reluctantly stopped, still muttering curses at one another. Suddenly, a thin figure fell straight from the sky.
"Harry!"
Sirius shouted, starting to run toward him, but Lupin grabbed him.
Spells flew from both the teachers' seats and the stands, stopping Harry's fall in midair.
"Thank goodness, thank you, Wade."
Lupin said and quickly put away his wand. They hurried down from the stands while trying not to bump into any students.
By the time they reached the field, a crowd had already gathered around Harry. Among them, Lockhart, dressed like a flamboyant green peacock, was pushing his way through the students.
He raised his wand and said loudly:
"Stand back, everyone. I can fix you up in just a second, Harry—don't worry. It's a very simple spell, one I've used countless times before."
Harry lay on the ground, clutching his arm and moaning, and apparently tried to speak, though his words were drowned out by the pouring rain.
Wade stopped in his tracks, and he immediately gripped his wand and was about to stop Lockhart, but then he hesitated.
—Sorry, Harry.
Wade silently apologized, and then widened his eyes and focused intently on Lockhart's actions.
Lupin and Sirius didn't know that this was the Lockhart that Harry often complained about in the Book of Friends. They instinctively paused, seeing him as a professor.
Lockhart spun his wand with exaggerated gestures, pointed at Harry's arm, and said, "Brackium Emendo!" (Removes bones (according to Gilderoy Lockhart, it cures bones))
A second later, Harry's arm drooped limply, like a rubber glove, and the people around him gasped, showing a look of horror and disgust.
"His arm bones are gone!"
Wood, who was bleeding from his head and had initially hoped for help from a professor, cried out in shock. When Lockhart looked his way, he backed away fearfully, clutching his head.
Alicia from Gryffindor quickly stepped in front of Wood, as though Lockhart were some kind of monster.
"Ah… well… haha, small mishaps do happen sometimes…"
Lockhart laughed awkwardly.
"Alright, Harry, at least you're not in pain anymore, right? Head to the hospital wing… Madam Pomfrey will, uh… fix you up a bit more."
Lockhart hurried away, vaguely sensing the sound of some beastly growl in the background.
"I'll kill him! I'll kill that bastard!" Sirius growled through gritted teeth.
"Yes, yes, but not now… remember? We snuck in here…" said Lupin as he dragged him toward the hospital wing.
Wade quietly cast a levitation spell on Sirius's cloak, lifting him slightly. Sirius flailed his arms and legs, unable to resist as Lupin pulled him along.
Eventually, Sirius gave up struggling and said grudgingly, "We have to teach him a lesson! Treating Harry like that!"
"Of course, absolutely," Lupin agreed decisively.
…
Madam Pomfrey was the only one who could have healed his arm in just a second, but now, with the bones removed, it would take at least an entire night to regrow them.
Ron pulled the bed curtains closed and helped Harry change into his pajamas. Madam Pomfrey handed Harry a large glass of Skele-Gro, then shooed the students out who had brought him to the hospital wing.
"He needs rest now! Out! Everyone out!"
In the corner, three people under the Disillusionment Charm remained unnoticed.
Regrowing bones was a painful ordeal. Once Madam Pomfrey left, Harry lay on the hospital bed and stifled groans as he endured the pain.
"Lift the charm, Remus," Sirius said hoarsely.
"Alright," Lupin replied, lifting the Disillusionment Charm.
Harry was startled. He propped himself up and looked around in surprise. "Sirius, Remus, and Wade? You're all here?"
"I saw your game." Sirius smiled and said, "It was incredible… you flew brilliantly…"
Harry grinned, as if he had even forgotten his pain for a moment.
The group chatted for a while, and then Wade and Lupin prepared to leave, but Sirius stayed seated by Harry's bedside, making no move to get up.
"Sirius?" Lupin asked.
"You go on," Sirius replied gruffly. "I want to stay with Harry tonight."
"Harry needs his sleep too."
"I'll watch him sleep," Sirius said stubbornly. "I won't disturb him!"
"Alright…" Lupin relented, adding one last reminder: "Don't get caught."
"I know… oh, and give me my wand back," Sirius added.
Since he couldn't carry a wand in his Animagus form, he'd given it to Lupin for safekeeping. Once he transformed back, he had forgotten to retrieve it.
Lupin handed the wand back, then said his goodbyes and left the hospital wing.
Wade glanced back, and saw Sirius sitting by Harry's bed with his head bowed, speaking softly to him—like a loyal, protective dog.
