Accompanied by the long sound of the train whistle, the Hogwarts Express finally departed the station.
Harry was on the train, and the thought of returning to the Dursleys' home made him quite upset. Ron and Hermione tried their best to cheer him up.
But for something like this, there wasn't much that underage kids could do.
Wade and his friends managed to secure an empty compartment without any trouble. Not long after boarding, they received an unexpected visitor.
"Hi!"
Cedric knocked on the door and stood at the entrance of their compartment, flashing a bright smile at Wade and his friends.
"Cedric!" Theo and Ryan greeted him enthusiastically.
"Hello, everyone!" Cedric said with a smile. "I just wanted to say—Grey, thank you for your History of Magic notes."
"Huh?" Wade was momentarily stunned before replying, "Oh… you're welcome. Did they help you?"
He had almost forgotten about that.
"Of course," Cedric said. "I have to say, your notes are incredibly well-organized. They helped me achieve a very high score in the end-of-term exams… and they'll be really useful for my OWLs next year too."
"That's great," Wade said with a smile.
"If there's ever anything you need help with—uh, I mean, if there's something I can assist you with, just let me know," Cedric said a bit awkwardly. "Actually, I've wanted to talk to you before, but you always seemed so busy, and I couldn't find a chance."
"There's no need to be so polite. You've helped us plenty too, haven't you?" Wade replied.
…
After Cedric left, several more people came to their compartment, most of them from pure-blood families.
Some invited Wade to visit their homes during the holidays, to which Wade responded, "I'm sorry, but Professor Murray has already made plans for my vacation."
Others came on behalf of their families or clans to express interest in collaborating on the production and sale of Streaming mirrors. Wade's response was, "I've already entrusted this matter entirely to Mr. Marchionne. You can contact him."
Some even wanted to gift him a sum of money—though he had no need for it.
After sending off the Nth visitor, Michael shut the door heavily and turned around with a sigh.
"I finally understand why you're always so elusive at school, Wade." Theo also commented, "It seems like even the slightest opportunity leads to an endless stream of people trying to find you."
"That's why he's rarely even seen in the common room," Michael said, looking utterly exhausted.
"So people keep asking me—'Michael, where's Wade? Michael, can you pass a message to Wade for me? Michael, can you give my photo to Wade? I really want to get to know him.'"
Michael imitated various people's tones and manners of speaking, making everyone laugh.
Just as his words ended, there was another knock at the compartment door.
Michael's face fell instantly.
"Let's see who it is this time," he said irritably, and yanked the door open. But his expression quickly softened.
It was the trolley witch with her snack cart.
Each of them bought some cakes, chocolates, candies, and drinks, piling everything on the table. This would serve as both their lunch and dinner.
The Hogwarts Express wouldn't reach the London station until the evening.
Guessing the flavors of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans remained an evergreen game. Even after two years, Wade had never eaten two beans with the same flavor.
"Try this one!"
Ryan tossed him a rose-colored bean. Wade held it up to inspect it and was about to share his guess, when his expression suddenly changed.
"What's wrong?"
Ryan froze, and tilted his head to look at the bean in Wade's hand.
Wade shook his head, put the bean down, and took out his Book of Friends from his bag. He enlarged a small rectangular piece of parchment that was tucked inside it.
On the previously blank parchment, a tiny black dot was moving, resembling a tadpole swimming in water.
Wade observed it seriously for a moment and confirmed that its direction remained consistent. Then he put the Book of Friends away and looked at the other three.
"Guys, I need to step out for a bit… Before I get back, make sure no one finds out that I've left," Wade said.
"The train is moving. How are you planning to leave?" Ryan asked in confusion. "On a broomstick? But—"
Michael interrupted him, and turned to Wade. "Where are you going?"
"Sorry, that's classified," Wade replied.
"Is it dangerous?" Theo asked.
"Not necessarily… If I encounter danger, I'll find a way to escape immediately," Wade said.
Michael nodded. "Got it… If anyone else comes looking for you, I'll tell them you're contemplating an alchemy problem and don't want to be disturbed."
"Alright, I'll leave it to you then."
Wade tucked his wand into his bag, then transformed his school bag into the shape of a pencil case. He opened the window, took a deep breath, and the midday wind instantly tousled his hair.
The next moment, Wade disappeared from where he stood, and a peregrine falcon appeared in the compartment.
Ryan jerked backward, his mouth agape in astonishment.
He watched as the falcon grabbed the pencil case and clenched the parchment in its beak. With a swift whoosh, it flew out through the window.
Ryan immediately rushed to the window and saw the falcon soaring higher and higher. Before long, it disappeared into the clouds, leaving no trace behind.
In the adjacent compartment, some students also noticed the bird flying past and shouted, pointing out the window, "Look, there's a hawk outside!"
Ryan slumped back into his seat, stunned for a while before asking the other two in an incredulous tone, "—An Animagus?"
Michael nodded and added, "Keep it a secret! Wade hasn't registered with the Ministry of Magic yet."
Ryan nodded absentmindedly and, after another pause, asked, "You guys already knew?"
Theo shook his head. "He didn't tell me… but for a while, Wade wasn't talking much, remember? I paid attention and noticed he had a leaf in his mouth… so I guessed it."
Still, seeing Wade successfully transform into an animal left Theo deeply shocked, though he didn't show it outwardly.
Ryan still looked incredulous. "Wade… just how many types of magic has that guy learned?"
"Who knows!" Michael shrugged. "Even I don't know how far he's gone unless he decides to say something himself."
"But his skills are definitely not much worse than the professors at school… He just lacks their experience…"
Theo gazed at the blue sky and white clouds outside with a faint worry in his expression. "I wonder what's going on… I hope he doesn't act recklessly."
"I just hope Wade deals decisively if he runs into enemies," Michael said. "He's a bit too soft-hearted."
"He has Dumbledore's Book of Friends," Ryan said, trying to reassure them. "If he encounters a dangerous opponent, the Headmaster could rush to him immediately, right?"
"Let's hope so," Michael replied.
