"Yes," another person respectfully confirmed. "The Book of Friends and the recently developed Streaming Mirror were both invented by him... I've interacted with him before, and I can confirm this is him."
If not for the golden specks stuck to Wade's palm, which had dulled his reactions, he would have given himself away at that moment.
This voice... I had just heard it a few days ago!
Will, from the Aslan Magic Workshop.
So this is the real reason that man sought him out?
It wasn't for potion testing... but to infiltrate this private gathering and kidnap the alchemists?
The man who had asked the question chuckled. "The Book of Friends isn't much—just a parchment version of a pager. But the Streaming Mirror is truly remarkable... the leader places great value on it."
"But the most important thing is the Magic Constructs," the woman from the counter interjected as she walked over with a cold sneer. "Wizards treating them like pets is sheer stupidity! With a few modifications, those things can become war machines!"
"That's why we need more alchemists... but Wade Grey is the most crucial."
The man bent down, took Wade's wand and then lifted him. "Still, it's hard to believe! The inventor is just a kid."
"Geniuses have never been in short supply. Mozart could play full piano compositions at the age of six," his companion remarked.
"Careful!" the counter girl suddenly snapped. "Do you have any idea how important his brain is? If you damage it, you can't make up for it even if you give up your own head!"
"Got it."
The man grumbled but adjusted his grip and picked Wade up entirely. He even made an effort to protect Wade's head from bumping against the walls.
As he was carried closer, Wade noticed that these individuals were all wearing something akin to tight-fitting wetsuits underneath their clothing, along with gloves and masks. The masks appeared to have an additional breathing apparatus inside.
A realization dawned on him—these people don't dare come into direct contact with the golden specks themselves.
The man carried Wade into the narrow passage hidden behind the portrait. The light dimmed considerably, and Wade discreetly wiped the specks from his hand and squinted to observe his surroundings.
The passage was damp and cold, with uneven ground and walls marked by excavation scars. Small, faint lights were spaced every ten meters or so, providing just enough illumination.
These individuals seemed to have excellent vision, as they moved steadily even in such poor lighting.
Professor Murray was not far behind, and was being dragged along with his arms supported. His feet stumbled over the uneven floor, but the captors seemed just careful about protecting his head, ensuring he didn't hit anything hard.
Feeling slightly relieved, Wade closed his eyes again and maintained his pretense of unconsciousness.
The power of the golden specks was peculiar and potent. Initially, there wasn't anything unusual, but the effects seemed to intensify over time.
Even though Wade had wiped off all the golden specks, he hadn't yet fully recovered. It felt as if the flow of his blood had slowed down.
After a long while, one end of the passage grew very bright. The man carrying him paused to let his eyes adjust, then climbed out with Wade.
"Huh?" The person receiving them exclaimed in surprise. "This is...?"
"Yes, it's him."
"Really got him?" The receiver clicked his tongue. "I heard he was under Dumbledore's protection, and the leader didn't hold out much hope. Who'd have thought we'd actually capture him this time..."
"And without any casualties on our side." Will, who emerged from the passage, chuckled. "This stuff is incredible! With something like this, what's left for wizards to fear?"
"Don't get cocky. This is still Britain," the receiver cautioned. "Hurry up. We need to leave with everyone before Dumbledore or the Ministry of Magic reacts."
Wade felt himself being shoved into a vehicle, pressed closely against another body.
"Shouldn't we tie them up?" someone asked worriedly. "Wizards are unpredictable. This vehicle doesn't have an anti-Apparition spell."
"No need. As long as the golden specks are on them, they won't wake up. Even if they did, handcuffs and ropes wouldn't hold them. Just take their wands, and let's move!"
The group moved quickly, loading the remaining captives into the vehicle and locking the doors with a loud clang.
Soon after, Wade felt a lurch as the vehicle started moving.
He carefully opened one eye and scanned his surroundings.
It was a box truck, with a layer of foul-smelling mats covering the floor. The alchemists were laid side by side on the mats, like a row of corpses ready for burial.
Strangely, there was no one else inside the truck. It seemed the captors feared the golden specks yet trusted its potency, so they didn't enter.
This worked in Wade's favor.
He slipped his hand into his trouser pocket and pulled out a small pencil case. The pocket itself had an Undetectable Extension Charm. Though it wasn't very spacious, it was more than enough to hold the pencil case.
The case dropped onto the floor, wobbled slightly, and then quickly expanded into a wardrobe-like structure.
The truck's high ceiling allowed it to stretch fully.
Next, Wade retrieved his backup wand and gave it a light wave. The alchemists scattered across the floor floated into the wardrobe's hidden space.
He hesitated, choosing not to immediately remove the golden specks from everyone. Instead, he used a small whirlwind to carefully collect the dust from Professor Murray and seal it inside a crystal vial.
Based on Wade's own experience, he knew it would likely take some time before Professor Murray could regain consciousness.
Inside the wardrobe space, the magic pocket pets gathered around Wade affectionately. Some curiously poked at the people lying on the grassy ground.
Then, a small cat, which had been hopping around on Orlando's body, suddenly froze mid-motion and collapsed with a thud.
The rest of the magic pets were instantly alarmed. They backed away from the group of humans on the ground and turned accusatory gazes toward Wade, silently blaming him for bringing in something dangerous.
The commotion caught the attention of Mikael, the Fiendfyre firebird. It flew over and tilted its head in curiosity as it observed the scene.
A drifting speck of gold dust landed on its body. Surprisingly, it wasn't burned away. Instead, it seemed to add a tiny embellishment to its feathers.
Wade's eyes narrowed slightly.
He pinched a small grain of the dust between his fingers and muttered, "Not even Fiendfyre can burn this... What on earth is it?"
Mikael tilted its head closer in confusion, then suddenly opened its beak wide and tilted its head back, mimicking a yawn.
Wade waved his wand and removed the golden specks from Mikael's body, and smiled. "Mikael, feeling bored in here?"
Mikael let out a soft chirp in response.
"We'll stretch our legs outside later," Wade said. "And our lively little friends here might need a bigger space to move around too."
His gaze shifted slightly and landed on a group of eight-eyed giant spiders nearby. They had been locked up for quite some time and were now turning on each other in a gruesome battle.
