Kai stood frozen, the eerie voice still echoing in his mind. The ruins were deathly silent, the only sound his own ragged breathing. The Codex in front of him was quiet now, its light dimmed to a faint glow. But the voice—the one that had called his name—still lingered, its presence heavy in the air.
"Kai Ren..." it repeated, low and distant, sending a chill down his spine.
He glanced around the ruins, half-expecting to see some new terror lurking in the shadows. But there was nothing. Just the lifeless bodies of the creatures he had defeated and the cold, crumbling stone walls around him.
"Who's there?" Kai called out, his voice trembling. He tried to sound brave, but the fear creeping into his chest was undeniable.
For a long moment, there was no response. Then, just as Kai was about to convince himself it was all in his head, the voice came again.
"You've awakened something far beyond your understanding..."
It wasn't coming from the Codex. The voice was deeper, older, and far more malevolent. Kai swallowed hard, his heart pounding in his chest. He could feel the weight of something watching him, something ancient and powerful.
He took a step back, his hand instinctively reaching toward the Codex, seeking its familiar warmth. But the book remained silent, its pages still, as if waiting. The power it had granted him moments ago was still there, humming faintly beneath his skin, but it felt distant now, as if it too was wary of whatever was happening.
"Show yourself!" Kai demanded, forcing strength into his voice.
The ruins trembled slightly, dust falling from the ceiling. And then, from the shadows at the far end of the chamber, something began to move. At first, it was just a flicker of darkness, barely noticeable, but as it grew, it became clearer.
A figure.
It stepped into the faint light, its form cloaked in shadows, its features obscured. But Kai could see the faint glimmer of red in its eyes—cold, malevolent, and ancient.
"You've taken what doesn't belong to you," the figure hissed, its voice like the scrape of metal on stone.
Kai clenched his fists, trying to summon the power from the Codex again, but the energy felt sluggish, as though something was suppressing it. The figure took another step closer, its presence heavy, oppressive.
"The Codex was never meant for you, boy," it continued, its tone dripping with contempt. "You are nothing but a pawn in a much larger game."
Kai's blood ran cold. The Codex—was this figure connected to it? Had he somehow awakened something darker by using its power?
"What are you?" Kai asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
The figure tilted its head, the red in its eyes glowing brighter. "I am the shadow that has waited for eons. And now, because of you, I am free."
A wave of cold washed over Kai, and he stumbled back, his mind racing. Free? What had he done? The Codex had chosen him, but now it seemed like it had unleashed something far more dangerous than the beasts that had attacked his village.
The figure moved closer, its shadowy form gliding across the floor without making a sound. "You are too weak to understand, too insignificant to wield such power. But no matter… it will all be over soon."
Kai's heart pounded in his chest. He couldn't let this thing—whatever it was—take the Codex from him. It had chosen him for a reason, and he couldn't back down now, not when so much was at stake.
Gritting his teeth, he focused on the faint energy still thrumming within him. He didn't understand how the Codex worked, not fully, but he had to try. He raised his hand, willing the power to flow through him again.
At first, nothing happened. The energy remained sluggish, distant. But then, just as the figure reached the center of the chamber, a flicker of light appeared in Kai's palm.
The figure stopped, its red eyes narrowing. "Foolish," it spat. "You cannot defeat me with such feeble power."
Kai ignored the taunt, focusing all his concentration on the light in his hand. It grew slowly, pulsing with a soft blue glow. It wasn't much, but it was something. He could feel the Codex responding to his will, even if it was weak.
The figure snarled, its shadowy form shifting, growing larger. "You've sealed your fate, boy."
With a sharp movement, the figure raised its hand, and a wave of darkness shot toward Kai, faster than he could react. He barely had time to raise his glowing hand before the darkness slammed into him, sending him flying backward into the stone wall.
Pain exploded through his body as he hit the ground, the breath knocked from his lungs. The glow in his hand flickered and died, leaving him in near-total darkness. Gasping for air, Kai struggled to push himself up, but his body felt heavy, his limbs sluggish.
The figure loomed over him, its eyes burning like embers in the night. "You are nothing," it whispered, its voice full of malice.
Kai's vision blurred, pain searing through him. He could feel the darkness pressing in, suffocating him. Was this how it would end? After everything, had he come this far only to be crushed by a power he didn't understand?
"Get up," a familiar voice echoed in his mind.
It wasn't the dark figure. It was the Codex. Its voice was faint, but firm, cutting through the fog of pain and fear.
"You are chosen. Stand and fight."
Kai's fingers twitched, his resolve hardening. The Codex hadn't abandoned him. It was still with him, still granting him strength. He just had to reach for it.
With a groan, he forced himself to his feet, his body trembling with the effort. The figure watched him, its red eyes narrowing, but Kai could feel the power building inside him again. Slowly, the light returned to his hands, stronger this time, more focused.
The figure hissed, raising its hand to strike again, but Kai was faster. With a shout, he unleashed the energy in a burst of blinding light, the power surging from his palms and crashing into the figure.
The darkness recoiled, hissing in pain as the light engulfed it. The figure's form wavered, its red eyes flickering as the light tore through its shadowy body.
Kai gritted his teeth, pouring everything he had into the attack. The Codex's power was his now—truly his—and he wasn't going to let this creature take it from him.
With a final, agonized screech, the figure disintegrated into the shadows, its form dissolving into nothingness. The ruins fell silent once more, the oppressive weight of the darkness lifting.
Kai stood there, panting, his hands still glowing faintly. The figure was gone, but the voice's final words echoed in his mind.
"You are nothing…"
But Kai knew better. He wasn't nothing. He was chosen.
And whatever awaited him next, he would be ready.
