The wind howled through the deserted streets, carrying with it a deep chill that settled into Hikaru's bones. The sinking realization that they hadn't escaped, that the curse was still with them, weighed down on everyone like a heavy fog.
"We… we can't still be in the village," Yuto stammered, stepping back in disbelief. "We crossed The Boundary. We saw it with our own eyes!"
"But look around," Yumi replied, her voice hollow. "The signs are all here. The twisted trees, the silence. We might not be in the village anymore, but whatever curse held us there, it's here too."
Aiko's breath hitched, tears forming in her eyes again. "Then… what was the point of everything? Riku died so we could escape, and it was all for nothing?" She wrapped her arms around herself, trembling.
"No," Hikaru said firmly, stepping forward. "It wasn't for nothing. We don't know how far the curse spreads, but there's got to be a way to break it. This place… it's different. It might be the key."
Yumi nodded slowly. "We can't give up now. If this town is part of the curse, there has to be something here we can use to stop it. We're closer to answers than we were before."
The group stood in tense silence, absorbing Yumi's words. The town was eerie, yes, but it was also their best lead. If the curse extended here, maybe they could finally find a way to break free from it once and for all.
"We need to find shelter," Mr. Sato said, speaking for the first time since they had arrived in the town. His face was etched with worry, but there was a quiet determination in his voice. "We can't wander the streets at night."
They moved cautiously through the empty town, eyes scanning every shadow, ears attuned to the faintest sound. Despite the lifeless appearance, Hikaru couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, as if unseen eyes were tracking their every movement.
They soon found a small, run-down hotel on the edge of the main street. Its windows were cracked, and the sign out front was so faded it was unreadable, but it seemed stable enough. Yumi pushed the door open, and they stepped inside.
The lobby was dark and dusty, with old furniture that had long since lost its color. The air inside was stale, and the silence felt suffocating, but it was better than the cold streets.
"We'll stay here tonight," Mr. Sato said, looking around. "Let's see if we can find anything useful."
The group split up, searching through the old building. Hikaru and Aiko went upstairs, finding a series of small, empty rooms. The walls were covered in peeling wallpaper, and the beds were nothing more than broken frames and torn mattresses.
As they entered one of the rooms, Aiko sat down on the edge of the bed, her shoulders slumping. "It's all too much," she whispered. "I thought we were free, Hikaru. I thought we'd made it."
Hikaru sat beside her, the floor creaking beneath them. He wanted to offer some comforting words, but he was struggling to hold onto hope himself. How could he promise things would be okay when everything felt like it was spiraling deeper into darkness?
"We'll figure it out," he said softly, placing a hand on her shoulder. "We've made it this far. We can't give up now. Riku didn't give up… and we owe it to him to keep fighting."
Aiko nodded, though her eyes remained distant. "I just… I don't know how much more I can take. It's like this nightmare never ends."
Before Hikaru could respond, there was a sudden noise from downstairs—a loud crash, followed by the sound of something heavy being dragged.
They both shot to their feet. "What was that?" Aiko whispered, her eyes wide with fear.
Hikaru motioned for her to stay behind him as they crept toward the door. His heart raced as they moved down the hallway, the dim light from the cracked windows barely illuminating the way.
They reached the stairs just as Yuto and Yumi appeared from the opposite direction, their faces tense.
"You heard that too?" Yuto whispered.
Hikaru nodded, and the four of them made their way down the stairs together. As they descended, the noise grew louder—something was moving in the lobby.
When they reached the bottom of the stairs, they froze.
In the middle of the room, one of the old chairs was slowly being dragged across the floor, scraping against the wooden boards. But there was **no one there**. The chair moved as if pulled by an invisible force.
Aiko gasped, clinging to Hikaru's arm. "What… what's doing that?"
Suddenly, the chair stopped, and the temperature in the room dropped sharply. Their breath became visible, fogging in front of them, and the atmosphere grew thick with an unsettling energy.
"We need to get out of here," Yumi said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Now."
But before they could move, the front door of the hotel slammed shut with a deafening bang, and the air seemed to hum with an unnatural power.
Haruto, who had been searching another part of the building, rushed into the lobby. "What's going on? I heard—"
He stopped short, his eyes widening as he took in the scene. The door was rattling on its hinges, as if something was trying to get in—or keep them from leaving.
"We're trapped," Yuto said, panic creeping into his voice.
Suddenly, a low, ominous whisper filled the room, coming from all directions at once. It was unintelligible, but the tone was unmistakable—**anger**. It was as if the very walls of the hotel were alive, infused with the curse's malevolent energy.
"We need to find a way out!" Hikaru shouted, grabbing Aiko's hand and pulling her toward the back of the building. The others followed, their footsteps echoing in the eerie silence.
They reached a back door that led to an alley behind the hotel, but it wouldn't budge. No matter how hard they pushed or pulled, it was as if the door had been sealed by some invisible force.
"What do we do?" Aiko cried, her voice trembling with fear.
Hikaru looked around frantically. The curse was here—it had followed them out of the village, and now it had them cornered. But there had to be a way to fight it. They couldn't just give up.
"Wait," Yumi said suddenly, her eyes narrowing. "There's something here… something in this hotel. I can feel it. The curse is stronger here, but that means it's tied to this place. Maybe this is where we find the answers."
"What are you talking about?" Yuto asked, confused.
Yumi turned to face them, her expression grim. "This hotel isn't just cursed—it's a part of the curse. If we can find out what's binding the curse to this place, we might be able to break it."
Hikaru's mind raced. Could Yumi be right? Was this old, decaying hotel somehow connected to the curse that had trapped them?
Before he could respond, the whispering grew louder, more insistent, and the walls around them seemed to pulse with dark energy.
"We don't have a choice," Hikaru said, his voice steady despite the fear gripping his heart. "We have to find whatever's holding the curse here. It's our only way out."
