Driving the machine requires extra vigilance because any little error can lead to death.

The plan was to burn the antidote as as the fumes get into the atmosphere, it burns every trace of the poisonous gas. The machine needs to be driven till it becomes hot enough to completely engage a chemical reaction that would completely vaporise the gas. Whoever is in the machine must make a quick escape or end up being vapourized too.
