Chapter 6: The Enchanted Woods
Kael's travels from the Celestial Forge had been long and arduous. The farther south he went, the more the landscape gradually changed from a stark, mountainous terrain to lush, green forests. Towering trees lined the horizon, their leafy canopies casting intricate shadows upon the earth. Deeper into the heart of the forest his path would take him, where the second Pillar of Light, the Heart of the Forest, was said to lie in wait.
Ancient magic hummed in the air and stirred to life in the Enchanted Woods. These were places of legend, where nature's spirits roamed freely, warding off intruders from their sanctified home. Kael had been told of travelers who entered the woods yet never emerged, lost in the very enchantments within. Now, with the Celestial Pillar safely tucked in his satchel, he was overcome with a surge of new strength that urged him onward.
With each step, Kael walked lightly, but every sound seemed magnified: leaves rustling, branches creaking, and the soft whisper of wind that tugged through the trees. The air was heavy with earthy scents and moss. Above him, slivers of sunlight managed to fight through the canopy overhead and shoot down onto the track ahead in threads of gilt. Yet beneath the fair veneer of the forest, something was amiss-uneasy; a presence never too far off yet always out of sight.
Deeper in he went, the more the woods changed around him. Trees twisted and curved in unnatural ways, and the path vanished and reappeared in strange locations. Trickling water seemed to whisper to him from nowhere. Kael knew that part of the woods' magic was now in play, trying his resolve and determination. Unlike physical tests of will in the Crystal Caverns, this would be one of mind and spirit.
Hours passed, or perhaps it was days; there was no way to tell. The very passage of time seemed muddled beneath the heart of the Enchanted Woods. Kael pressed on, guided by instinct and the map given him by the Elders. Yet the woods had their own mischievous ways, guiding him circularly, mesmerizing his senses.
As the sun began to set, Kael came to a small clearing. The center was dominated by an ancient, gnarled tree-its trunk hollowed out, the roots snaking across the ground like veins. Standing before it was a woman, cloaked in emerald green, her hair around her, flowing like ivy. Her eyes glowed softly within the dim light; her voice sounded like leaves rustling in the wind.
"Greetings, Kael, bringer of the Inevitable Current," she told him, her eyes boring into his soul. "You have come to seek the Heart of the Forest, but few are granted its gift. Only those who prove their unity with the spirits of nature may claim it."
Kael took a cautious step forward. "I have come to save Eldoria from the darkness that spreads. The Heart of the Forest is crucial to my mission."
The eyes of the woman sparkled with humor. "The forest is indifferent for the affairs of men. It cares only for balance, for the harmony that sustains life. If you seek the Heart, you must prove your relation to this balance. You must face the Trial of Spirit.
But before Kael was able to utter a word, she disappeared, and the ground began to shudder under his feet. Giant roots burst from the ground and, twisted, curled, and wove around him in some kind of a maze. The trees bent and shifted inward, shutting him inside where the air grew thick and alive.
And in that instant, Kael felt the presence-no, presences-apparent around him. The spirits of the forest came forth-translucent beings of light and shadow, changing their forms back and forth from beasts to humanoid shapes. They moved with a silence that belied their motion, the light in their eyes like tiny furnaces of knowledge and strength gained over so many years.
One spirit, larger and more defined than the rest, stepped forward. It was a great stag, his antlers adorned with leaves of pure silver. The voice of the stag was deep and resonant in Kael's mind.
"To claim the Heart of the Forest, you must show reverence for the life that is around you-for the spirits that reside within this place of sanctity. You must make your way through the Trial of Spirit and prove your understanding as to how man and nature balance each other out."
Kael nodded, his heart quickening. "What must I do?
Bright with defiance, the eyes of the stag shone on. "You shall have to face the force within you that is striving to enslave nature. Only while setting free and accepting your place in the life cycle will you pass this test.
His mind was racing. Until then, all the issues that came up for Kael to face, he could eliminate them with his powers and the Invincible Flow. It was his powers that made him able to take command over the elements, to fight against the darkness. Here, in the Enchanted Woods, this would be different. Another kind of test-this one a demand to bend rather than dominate.
Kael closed his eyes and dropped to one knee on the forest floor. He laid his palms against the cool earth: here was the beat of life beneath him, in the tangle of roots and insects, in the flow of water through the soil. Kael reached out with his mind-but not to control; he listened. He opened himself to the forest, to the spirits, allowing their energy to flow through him.
Nothing moved for a moment. Then, with slow realization, the shift began for Kael. The spirits that surrounded him drew closer-their forms becoming clearer. The stag stepped forward, its huge presence looming over him, but no longer in challenge. Instead, its eyes shone bright with approbation.
"You are learning," said the stag in a softer voice now. "The Invincible Flow is not something you command; it is a current you join. And the forest lives not by control, but by the harmony of all living in concert.
Kael nodded as comprehension set in. He could feel the flow of Invincible Flow coursing through his veins, yet instead of controlling the energy, he followed its lead and allowed his own to merge with that of the forest.
As the spirits began to retreat, their forms dissolved into the mist. The roots that formed the labyrinth sank back into the earth and the trees resumed their natural shape. A stag stepped aside to let in view the glowing heart-shaped crystal nestled in the roots of the ancient tree: the Heart of the Forest.
Kael rose lighter in body and clearer in mind. He stepped to the crystal and lifted it carefully from its resting place. As his fingers closed around it, a wave of warmth and peace washed over him. The Heart of the Forest was his, another Pillar of Light to add to his quest.
The woman in emerald re-appeared, her face softened. "You have passed the Trial of Spirit, Kael. The forest has come to acknowledge that you are, indeed, a guardian and not a conqueror. Take the Heart onward, but remember this: true power does not lie in strength but in understanding. "
Kael bowed his head in gratitude. "Thank you; this lesson I will carry with me.
As Kael secured the Heart of the Forest, he turned and left the clearing; the way in front of him shone brightly in the soft light of the crystal. The Enchanted Woods were not mystifyingly confusing anymore but welcomed him. Trees parted as he walked towards them, while the forest magic guided him to the edge of the woods.
He came out of the forest at sunrise, the hue of gold falling upon the landscape. Kael stood at the edge of the trees, heart filled with purpose. The second Pillar was his, and with it, he was one step closer to a confrontation with the darkness threatening Eldoria.
There was still one more Pillar to find: the Abyssal Sanctuary, located outside this world. Before him lay the path into the void, where the last and most perilous of all trials waited.
Kael steeled himself once more and set his gaze out to the horizon to meet whatever fate lay in store for him.
