Chapter 118: The Undead Monarch Appears

"I'm glad everyone could make it here, but I must inform you of some unfortunate news." As the mages gathered at the northern city wall, Zhu Meng, with a heavy expression, addressed the crowd.

As he spoke, he walked towards the edge of the hall, stepping in his tall black boots, until he reached the intricately carved dragon-and-phoenix railing. His words paused, leaving everyone with an incredibly somber silhouette.

"A chasm of death has appeared 30 kilometers directly north!" Zhu Meng finally revealed the next part.

When he mentioned "chasm of death," Zhu Meng couldn't help but think of what Mo Fan had said earlier.

Clearly, the ancient city was truly facing a catastrophe!

"ROAAAARRRRR!!!"

At that very moment, a terrifying roar echoed from the gloomy sky to the north, shaking the iron city walls violently!

Everyone felt their eardrums ache as if a massive shockwave, with the power of an unstoppable tide, was crashing toward the city from the horizon.

Several of the higher-ups immediately looked toward the source of the sound.

Beneath the dark, velvet clouds, a colossal shadow appeared at the horizon!

Surrounding this shadow was an overwhelming mass of darkness, like a rising tide spreading outwards. Even though it wasn't entirely visible, the density of undead gathered there was beyond imagination.

The shadow stood tall, roaring toward the sky. The sound rolled like thunder, piercing through the heavens and shaking the very walls of the city.

"It's it again! That Undead Monarch is using the deathly energy from this chasm to gather even more undead, attempting to break through the northern wall!" Zhu Meng said angrily.

"This is very bad. This Undead Monarch already commands millions of undead, and with the chasm aiding it, it will be even more unstoppable. We must request additional reinforcements," said a military strategist named Wei Fang.

"We're running out of available personnel," his superior, Lu Xu, replied grimly.

"No, we can't afford to! Our forces are limited, and the other mages are busy evacuating the civilians. The undead are endless, and if we don't survive this night, the northern wall will be completely overrun by this Undead Monarch. The civilians in the outer city haven't all made it to safety yet…" Another military commander chimed in.

Though some didn't know why Han Ji, the guild leader, had issued the evacuation order, they now realized it was a very wise decision, given the situation.

Zhu Meng glanced at Mo Fan, recognizing that everything Mo Fan had said earlier was likely true.

Thus, the outer wall could not be allowed to fall at any cost!

He immediately said, "It looks like we'll need to execute the plan we prepared earlier."

This Undead Monarch had appeared more than once, so Zhu Meng, a member of the Hidden Council, had long developed a strategy.

"Lord Zhu Meng, that plan is too dangerous. If we're not careful, we could end up surrounded by the undead army," said the strategist Zhu Fang.

"Strategist Zhu, as long as I, Zhu Meng, stand in this city, I won't allow any monster to run rampant. We don't have enough forces to hold back this massive undead horde, but we do have a chance to kill this undead monarch!" Zhu Meng declared righteously.

Zhu Meng didn't hold his high position in the National Magic Association because he controlled wealthy families or had secret backing. His status came from his willingness to personally lead the charge when danger appeared—a trait the other, more complacent council members, sitting in their high seats of power, lacked.

This courage had earned him his position!

"No, absolutely not! If you fail, who will command the defense of the northern wall? Everything would fall into chaos!" Zhu Fang insisted firmly, refusing to let the high-ranking officers risk their lives.

Zhu Meng might have been willing to charge into battle, but that didn't mean others should follow him into such a perilous situation.

"Then what's your solution for stopping the Undead Monarch's assault?" Zhu Meng countered.

"There must be another way."

"If we wait an hour, they'll be less than three kilometers from the wall," Zhu Meng stated.

"Even so, I can't allow it," Zhu Fang was unwavering in his opposition.

"Then how about adding me to the group?" At that moment, a man in a long black robe with sharp, sword-like eyebrows and a calm, confident smile stepped forward from the crowd of mages.

Everyone turned to look at the man. Several members of the Hunter Alliance seemed to recognize him instantly, their faces lighting up in surprise.

It was Hunter King Du Xiao!

His companion was a seductive man in a leather jacket who appeared to have some connection with Clear Sky hunter group, as Lingling often referred to him as "that demon man."

Mo Fan had run into him a few times before.

Glancing back, Mo Fan saw that the demon-like man with a slender, feminine figure was indeed standing nearby, grinning. He walked over to Mo Fan and said playfully, "Getting tired of slaying demons? Looking to try out some undead?"

"Your phrasing makes me uncomfortable," Mo Fan frowned.

Though Mo Fan knew the guy didn't mean anything by it, his eerie demeanor was still unsettling.

"Hahaha, you arrived just in time!" Zhu Meng laughed heartily upon seeing Du Xiao.

"If I had known a summoning call would bring the famous Hunter King Du Xiao, I would have given up on the others," Chief Instructor Feijiao also smiled.

"Strategist Zhu, I can't guarantee that our hunt for the Undead Monarch will go perfectly, but at the very least, our chances will improve, and I'll ensure they come back alive," Du Xiao said confidently, paying no mind to the previous discussion.

Everyone understood the stakes. With the chasm of death drawing in countless undead, the Undead Monarch was summoning them for an overwhelming assault. If they didn't kill it now, more commander-level and warrior-level undead would awaken. The ancient city would only survive if the Undead Monarch was slain!

Zhu Fang understood this, too. With Du Xiao joining the effort, he had no choice but to agree.

"Alright, we have enough super-level mages now. It's time to proceed with the plan."

At this point, Lu Xu added, "The Undead Monarch is surrounded by a group of bone generals, corpse generals, and ghost generals. Bone generals and corpse generals are mere pests to us, easily crushed. However, the ghost nobles, led by their ghost ministers, can deliver devastating psychic attacks. None of us specialize in mind magic, right?"

Zhu Meng glanced at the gathered mages and said, "Apologies, but the situation is now even worse than we thought. We'll need your assistance in killing the Undead Monarch. Don't worry, we'll handle the Undead Monarch itself, but you'll need to deal with the undead swarming in the way and ensure the light-based magic arrays can scatter them."

Thanks to Zhu Meng's leadership, the others didn't hesitate to join the effort.

Mo Fan, too, joined the mixed team heading out to face the undead.
