There's a certain moment when you realize life isn't just slapping you in the face—it's full-on sucker-punching you. Standing in a dark alley, facing off with two vampires while a guy who claims to know my family history pulls out a shiny silver blade? Yeah, I was definitely in the middle of one of those moments.
"Stay behind me," Sebastian said, his voice cool and calm. Easy for him to say—he had a weapon. I had… sarcasm. And apparently, some strange vampire-launching power that I didn't even know how to use.
The vampires crept closer, their eyes glowing with hunger. Or was it bloodlust? Honestly, it all kind of looked the same to me. One of them licked his lips like I was some kind of midnight snack. "Fresh blood," he hissed. "I can smell the power on him."
Great. So now I smelled delicious too.
Sebastian gave me a quick glance over his shoulder. "Whatever you did last night, Cain, now would be a good time to figure it out."
"Yeah, sure," I muttered, rolling my eyes. "Because I definitely know how to not die in this situation."
The vampires lunged. Sebastian moved faster than I could blink, slicing through the air with his silver blade. He caught the first vampire in the chest, sending him stumbling back with a guttural growl. The second one dodged and leaped toward me.
I froze. My body screamed, Move, you idiot! but my brain was like, Let's just stand here and see what happens! Spoiler alert: that was a bad idea.
Before I knew it, the vampire had me pinned against the wall, his fangs inches from my neck. "I've always wanted to taste the blood of a Cain," he hissed.
"Oh, really?" I wheezed, trying to push him off. "Well, I can't say I've ever wanted to be a walking juice box, so how about we just skip that part?"
Sebastian was busy with the other vampire, too far away to help. My heart pounded in my ears, and that strange energy from before started building up inside me again. The vampire grinned, his fangs gleaming in the dim light.
"Okay, body," I muttered through gritted teeth. "Do that thing you did last night. You know, the *get-the-bloodsucker-off-me* thing!"
As if on cue, the power exploded from my chest, sending the vampire flying across the alley. He crashed into a dumpster with a satisfying thud. I gasped for air, my whole body shaking. Did I just do that *again*? And more importantly, how?
Sebastian, having finished off his opponent, turned to me with an impressed look. "Not bad. You're a quick learner."
"Yeah, well," I panted, still trying to catch my breath. "I didn't exactly have a lot of options."
The vampire I'd thrown was already getting back on his feet, his eyes flashing with rage. "You'll pay for that, Cain," he growled, wiping blood from his mouth.
"Wow," I said, sarcasm dripping from my voice. "That's a totally original line. Never heard that one before."
Sebastian moved in front of me, raising his blade. "Go back to your masters. Tell them Eli Cain is under protection now. Come after him again, and it won't end well."
The vampire hissed, but after a moment, he backed off, dragging his unconscious buddy with him. "This isn't over," he spat before disappearing into the shadows.
I leaned against the wall, my legs feeling like jelly. "I can't believe this is my life now."
Sebastian sheathed his blade, walking over to me. "You handled yourself better than most would."
"Oh yeah, sure. Nearly getting my throat ripped out? Totally nailed it."
Sebastian smirked. "You didn't die. That's a win in my book."
"High standards you've got there, buddy," I muttered, running a hand through my hair. "So, now what? More vampires? More 'You're destined to save or destroy everything' talk?"
"Eventually, yes," he said, his tone suddenly serious. "But for now, we need to get you trained. That power you have? It's raw, unpredictable. If you don't learn to control it, you won't survive the next attack."
I stared at him. "Training? Like, vampire hunter boot camp?"
"More or less," he replied, crossing his arms. "Unless you'd rather stay helpless?"
"Well, when you put it like that..." I sighed, shaking my head. "Look, man, I'm not exactly superhero material. I don't know the first thing about fighting vampires or using weird bloodline powers."
Sebastian gave me a long, calculating look. "That can change. You have potential, Cain. Whether you believe it or not."
"Right," I muttered, not entirely convinced. "So, where do we start? Garlic and stakes? Or do I just need to drink a lot of coffee to stay awake during the day?"
He didn't laugh. In fact, he looked dead serious. "We start with your history. You need to understand what you are."
I raised an eyebrow. "What I am? Dude, I'm just a college student. I'm not some ancient vampire-killing warrior or whatever."
"You're a Cain," Sebastian said, his eyes narrowing. "And that bloodline carries more weight than you realize. It's not just vampires who'll come for you. There are worse things lurking in the shadows, things that have been waiting for someone like you."
I felt a chill crawl down my spine. "Worse things? Like what?"
"Demons, dark magic, creatures that make vampires look like house pets," he said, his tone deadly serious. "And they'll all be hunting you soon enough."
Great. Just what I needed. Demons. As if vampires weren't bad enough.
I rubbed my temples, feeling a headache coming on. "Okay, fine. Let's say I believe you. What do I do now?"
Sebastian placed a hand on my shoulder, his expression softening just a little. "You survive, Cain. And if you're smart... you might just live long enough to figure out how to win."
