A Flicker in the Dark

It was as if I was thrown into the black abyss. My mind screamed at me to wake up, to fight back, but it was like being caught in the grip of a nightmare with no end. The void around me was alive, thick with something ancient and sinister. As I hit the ground with a painful thud, my breath left me, and I was left gasping, sprawled in the darkness.

The faint light flickered ahead, casting strange shadows along the damp walls of this building. My head spun, pain coursing through my limbs as I forced myself to stand. The markings on the walls glowed faintly, strange symbols that made my skin crawl. I didn't recognize them, but they felt… old. Like they were carved on the walls a century ago.

I stumbled forward, my breath ragged. The whispers returned, circling me like a predator. "He's waiting, Eli…"

My vision blurred, my legs weak beneath me, but I pushed on. My thoughts flickered to Sebastian. Was he still out there, or had those things—whatever they were—already gotten to him?

"Eli Cain," a voice echoed, sending a chill straight through my spine.

I turned slowly, and there he was—Herald or whatever they are. Their face remained hidden beneath a dark hood, his posture unnaturally still, as if he didn't need to breathe.

"You…" I managed to croak, my throat dry. "Who the hell are you, and what do you want from me?"

Their eyes gleamed brighter in the dim light, and his lips curled into a slow, weird smile. "We are DEATHREIGN...." they said in a malicious tone. "We want you. That's all. You're more important than you realize."

"More important? To you?" I took a shaky step back. My mind raced, trying to connect the dots, but I couldn't. Why would something like this be coming after me? What did I have to offer?

"You are the key, Eli," Deathreign continued, his voice smooth, yet filled with something dark and dangerous. "Your blood… it holds power beyond your understanding. Power that was never meant to be awakened. But now, it's too late. The ancient ones have taken an interest."

My blood? What was he talking about? I wasn't some chosen one. I wasn't special. But the way he spoke, as if I were a piece of some twisted puzzle… it made my skin crawl.

"You think you're just another vampire?" Their voice turned mocking. "But your bloodline traces far deeper, far darker than you could ever know. And once the others find you, Eli… there will be no hiding."

I opened my mouth to say something, anything, but the air grew heavy, thick with the oppressive force of Deathreign's presence. He took a step forward, and for the first time, I felt real fear. There was something truly monstrous about him, something I couldn't fight.

Just when I thought I was done for, the shadows around me exploded into chaos.

A flash of silver shot through the air, and Deathreign's head snapped back, a low growl escaping his lips. Another blur of movement—a figure darting across the room, too fast to follow. I barely had time to register what was happening before Deathreign was forced back, his twisted form slipping into the shadows.

The room filled with a blinding light, and I caught the glint of a blade. Vampire hunters. I tried to focus, my vision blurring as they moved in, striking with precision. Deathreign let out a snarl before they disappeared completely into the darkness, leaving me gasping, barely able to stand.

That's when I saw her...

Amidst the chaos, through my hazy vision, a figure stood on the entrance, long shiny silver hair flowing in the dim light, her eyes flashing with intensity. She wore a sleek, leather jacket, black combat boots, and her movements were as sharp and deadly as the blade she wielded. There was something familiar about her—the way her eyes locked onto mine, just for a brief moment. My heart skipped a beat.

Luna Winters? My mind raced, but I couldn't be sure. The room was spinning too fast.

I tried to call out, but the world around me tilted, and I felt my body give in. The last thing I saw was her face—a flash of concern in her eyes—before everything went dark.

I woke up in my room.

For a moment, I lay there, staring up at the ceiling, trying to make sense of everything. My body ached, but it wasn't as bad as I expected. It was like… I had healed, somehow, "I guess you do get some perks when you are a Vampire". The events of the night flooded back into my mind, but it felt like a blur—falling into the darkness, Deathreign's twisted smile, and then… her.

I shot up, my heart racing. Was that really Luna? Or had my mind been playing tricks on me? I wasn't sure anymore. I glanced around my room—everything looked normal, untouched. Like nothing had happened at all.

But as I swung my legs over the edge of the bed, I noticed something different. A note, tucked neatly under my pillow. My hands trembled as I pulled it out and unfolded the small piece of paper.

"We'll be watching you Eli. You're not alone in this. -Luna Winters."

So it had been her. But why had she saved me? And why was Deathreign so obsessed with my blood?

A knock on my door snapped me out of my thoughts. It creaked open slowly, and there stood Sebastian, looking in a bad condition but, very much alive. His face was pale, his usually confident expression replaced with something close to fear....

"Eli," he said, his voice low and tense. "We need to talk. Deathreign wasn't lying. You're in more danger than you realize."
