Chapter 4

Veronica was stuck in the same place she was in the hospital. She was left not knowing anything about her life before the incident.

Veronica smiled, putting the matter to rest for now. 'I won't get any answers from her.'

"I want to see my room," Veronica said, eager to find a place where she could be alone.

Edna sighed in relief, happy to move on. "This way. I had it cleaned up for when you would return. I always knew you would wake up despite what the reports said."

"What did they say?" Veronica inquired.

Edna bit her lip. Veronica was the one with memory loss yet Liam's order to not say anything was slipping Edna's mind. "They were too negative about if you would wake up. Don't pay those paparazzi flies any mind since they like to make up lies. You never spoke with any so they make us lies."

"So, my face plastered all over the news is because of him, isn't it?" Veronica replied, realising how much of a bigger deal her husband was.

Again, how did she marry such a man?

What was her life like with her parents?

Was she rich?

"Are my parents rich?" Veronica asked.

"It depends on who you ask. To me, they are rich but in the world of your- Oh!" Edna covered her mouth. "I said too much."

"You have not said enough," Veronica responded. "If you ever cared for me, please tell me the truth. What are my parents like? What was I like with him?"

Edna tried to settle Veronica down. "You were happy with him. The happiest couple I ever worked for so please," she pleaded, looking around to see who watched them. "Please trust your husband. You did love him."

"I don't know whether to take your answer as the truth or a lie. I promise not to ask you more about my marriage and family if you answer one thing. Was I afraid of going on boats out in the open water?" Veronica questioned, her mind fixated on her accident.

"Oh, terribly afraid. You two never attend any business parties if they were on a boat," Edna answered.

"I see. Thank you for being honest," Veronica answered, satisfied with the response. "I am going to rest now."

"Oh, okay," Edna replied, not knowing what to make of Veronica moving on. "This way."

Veronica pondered on what the reports said about her accident.

'They said I almost drowned,' she recalled. 'But I was afraid of boats? Who was I with?'

There was an unsettling feeling now that it was starting to seem like it wasn't an accident.

Veronica looked up at where her husband had walked off to his office. He was suspicious and uncomfortable to be around but was he trying to protect her? His methods weren't right but was he her only hope right now?

Upstairs, Liam overlooked the current news articles about his wife.

"They are reporting that she came back from the dead. There had already been reports about her dying a day before and it spread like wildfire over the internet before we got it down," said Jerome, an associate of Liam.

"Her mother went around weeping like she was dead from the day they found her. She accepted interviews and portrayed herself as a broken-hearted mother to anyone who would listen. Veronica waking up stopped her plans," said Liam.

Liam watched the video of Evelyn exiting the hospital with a smile on her face, sharing the news that Veronica was well awake. The only good thing Evelyn had done was not share Veronica's memory loss.

Jerome cleared his throat. "About the remote…"

"I know it was wrong to break it. I took my anger for everything else out on it. Veronica would have gathered the pieces and made me glue it back together," Liam chuckled.

He imagined her standing above him while he sat with glue trying to put the remote back together.

"I don't have video evidence of how her family treated and tried to use her. Her phone, which must have all the answers I am looking for, is missing and no matter how much money I pay, it is not tracked. Tell me," Liam leaned back on his chair, his gaze fixed on Jerome.

"If you woke up not knowing your past and someone told you that your family could not be trusted but they didn't have proof, would you believe them?"

Jerome thought about it for a moment. "It depends on who is telling me and over time, I will be able to witness whether it is true or not. Your mother-in-law was never a good actress though she claims to be a well-awarded one. She will show her true colours to Veronica."

"I don't want her family to get close to her to show her. She was looking into something and kept it from me. Something she knew led to her ending up in that water. I don't know how she got there," Liam sighed.

Again, he was left needing to get answers from Veronica but that might not come soon.

Jerome checked his phone after it vibrated. "Your mother wants to see you."

"Not now," Liam replied, not needing her opinion right now. "I just want peace with my wife. I almost lost her."

"You will lose her now if you keep scaring her. Stay away from remotes," Jerome advised Liam. "Try to answer a few innocent questions. She doesn't know who she is right now. The Veronica that I know will not be happy when her memories are back and you failed to explain her past to her."

Liam closed his laptop, having had enough of the news and all the stories being spun. "I look forward to what she will do when her memories are back. Focus on finding her phone and prepare to make a press statement."

Liam stood up from his chair. "I have to start over winning her trust again and I'm already off to a bad start. I'm an idiot."

"You have many videos and photos of you two together. Show her that and think of this as getting the chance for you two to fall in love with each other again," Jerome suggested, knowing this wasn't the end for the couple.

Jerome peered down at his phone again after it vibrated again. "It is your mother again. She says that if you avoid her, she will tell the press reaching out to her about wanting you to divorce Veronica."

Liam laughed, more humoured than annoyed by his mother's threats. "She wouldn't do that to ruin the family image. Block her."

"That will just enrage her," Jerome answered.

"Good," Liam answered, proceeding to do as he instructed Jerome on his phone. "We will both be angry."
