Chapter 10

'Who is Sarah?' Veronica wondered. She thought of the affair Beth mentioned.

Was there another woman? Why did Edna know about this woman?

Veronica was left believing that the photos she saw of herself and Liam had been once when they were happy but this marriage was ruined now.

"I'm sorry for bringing her up," Edna apologised. She made the mistake of speaking of more than her work. "I will make the sandwich now. Should I make one for you?"

Edna couldn't think of the last time she saw Liam enjoying a proper meal. It was understandable that with his wife unconscious Liam didn't have time to stop and eat meals like he used to. Edna could only hope he would not fall ill as well.

"I don't want one. Take care of Veronica," Liam said, deciding to check on her again.

Veronica had been so quiet that it was starting to be a little suspicious. What had she found to occupy her time with?

Liam left Edna and made his way toward the stairs where he was able to get a glimpse of a shadow moving.

It seemed there was a spy in the house.

Liam headed right to Veronica's bedroom. He heard the faintest sound of the door closing when he reached the second floor. She wasn't swift like she placed herself to be.

Liam knocked on the door, waiting to see if she was ready to speak to him. He had been careless at first but had time to think and regret his actions.

He sighed in relief when the door opened. "Are you ready to talk now?"

'"No," Veronica proceeded to close the door but once again, Liam stopped it with his foot. "I will hurt your foot if I need to. What do you want to speak about now?"

Veronica didn't want to talk to Liam now. Who was Sarah? Why couldn't she be mentioned in this house?

Veronica didn't know why but there was an uneasy feeling from thinking there was another woman. Some part of her had to be still in love with the man before her so Veronica felt conflicted.

What was the woman before the incident so in love with?

"It's time we talk. I am sorry for leaving you in the dark. I thought it would be in your best interest to not let you see all the news stories about you or tell you how vile your family is. I didn't want you throwing yourself back into what got you in this position," Liam explained his actions. "But I am sorry."

"I know you were sneaking around to listen to what I said to Edna. If there is something you want to know now ask," Liam said, willing to answer so she didn't need to sneak around.

Veronica had much she wanted to ask especially about Sarah but knew it was unlikely he would tell her that he was having an affair. "I don't want to talk."

"You wouldn't be sneaking around if you weren't looking for answers-"

"Who is Sarah?" Veronica blurted out. She bit her tongue, mentally scolding herself for asking.

Liam narrowed his eyes. How much had she heard?

Liam sighed, folding his arms. Her curiosity was toward others she shouldn't think about.

Veronica closed her hand into a fist. "See, you don't want to answer my questions. You don't need to tell me about her. It is fine with me if you had an affair-"

"Affair?" Liam interrupted Veronica. "Where did you get that ridiculous idea and with Sarah of all people? She's my cousin."

"Cousin," Veronica repeated, shocked.

"From my mother's side. You were close but after she found herself in trouble with my mother and aunt, she used you as a scapegoat. Sarah fixed her problem by using you and you hadn't spoken to her since you found out. She's been coming to apologise but you said she wasn't allowed in," Liam explained.

Liam noticed Veronica didn't seem to believe him. "Would you like to get my phone to show you my family? A quick search will show her or if you trust Edna more, I can bring her."

"No. It sounds like it is true. I misunderstood," Veronica admitted. He would have to be foolish to lie about what a quick search could fix.

"That happens when you sneak around. What is this nonsense about an affair? Of all the things you can think, why an affair?" Liam asked.

Liam expected her to misunderstand many things but how did she jump to an affair?

Veronica hesitated to reveal why but then quickly decided to. She needed to get answers so she didn't have to pick from conversations and still have the wrong answer. "Beth mentioned an affair when we were in the hospital and then you said Sarah's name couldn't be said here."

"Of course it was Beth. She's among the group trying to find a flaw in our marriage. I am not having an affair and I never thought about one. I certainly won't have one with my cousin," said Liam.

"Truthfully, I don't know what to believe. You can hide anything from me right now since I don't know where to look. I can't just jump to believing everything you say but I do believe she is your cousin. You messed up me trusting you," said Veronica, placing some blame on Liam.

"I have never lied to you," Liam pointed out.

"You have kept things from me. That is not a good look when someone is accusing you of cheating on me," Veronica said, not dismissing anything yet.

Liam held back letting out a curse. "I have never cheated. Beth will never know more about me than you did. If I were so stupid to have an affair, you would not still be my wife. You would have left me."

"We're in the public eye because of my family. There are wrong reports about us. You own an art gallery and there had been a time you met with an artist you wanted to include in a show. You were photographed with him in a restaurant and there were reports I had to stop about our marriage ending," Liam said.

Liam hadn't believed the reports then because he knew about the dinner. He wasn't jealous when Veronica met with men for work as he had to do the same with women. They had both been understanding and informed each other of the meetings.

Veronica was the one who suddenly became secretive yet Liam was patient with her and waited for her to come to him.

If anyone were to suspect cheating it could have been him for how she started to be but he didn't.

"We need to start over and talk. Will you let me or should I leave?" Liam asked, waiting for Veronica's call.

Veronica wanted to close the door again to have him think over his actions a little more but she didn't like not knowing anything. "First, promise to put back on the internet for me to use and I want to use the television."

"You will regret it but fine, I will have it turned on as soon as we are done here," Liam agreed.

Veronica opened the door, freeing Liam's foot. "Then we can talk now."

At the moment, he was all she had to rely on so they should move forward but he or anyone else was sadly mistaken if they thought they could fool her and get away with it.
