Chapter 18

Veronica didn't know why she hadn't thought of this sooner. What had she been spending her money on? Where had she been going?

Jerome wished to tell her that Liam had already gone through them but he didn't want to ruin her excitement. Nothing strange had stuck out to Liam when he looked over her bank statements but maybe it took Veronica to find what they missed.

"They are put away in Mr. Sterling's office. I can find them for you," Jerome offered.

"No. I will get it myself. You look hesitant to allow me," Veronica said, picking up on the fact he didn't like it. "Did my husband tell you to not let me inside his office? What can't I see there?"

"It wasn't like that, Mrs. Sterling. There are a lot of files put away in his office so it would be tiresome for you to go through them. I don't know if there is something there you cannot see. I just get what Mr. Sterling needs," Jerome responded.

"I see. It was a nice offer but I can look for it myself. I won't keep it from my husband that I was in his office. You can stand by the door if you want. Edna, can you bring me a drink there?" Veronica asked, prepared to spend most of her day in Liam's office.

Since Liam didn't have anything to hide then she would sit there all day instead of being bored.

"Do I have an office?" Veronica asked, curious if she worked so much to need one.

"You do. It is to the right of your bedroom," Jerome replied.

Veronica thought of Jerome as a man with not too many words. His responses were short and straight to the point, not caring to add in more than she asked for. She saw why Liam hired him and left him to be the one to get what she needed.

Jerome followed Veronica to help if she would get lost. He was certain once she started to look for where Liam placed her bank statements, she would become tired and need his help. She was underestimating how many documents Liam had put away in his office.

'Or is she looking for something else?' Jerome wondered.

It was strange to see Veronica like this. She seemed without her protective shell which prevented anyone from hurting her.

Though she had become part of the Harper family, Veronica didn't act like the others or was treated like them because she was seen as an outsider. Still, it didn't affect her as she properly dealt with those around her like she had reached her breaking point and refused to be walked over.

The Veronica in front of Jerome was defenceless. She didn't know what it meant to be the wife of Liam Sterling. If her memories never returned, she had to start to adapt to what it meant to be his wife.

Was she ready for that?

Veronica decided to make use of Jerome since he was following her. "Do I have a reliable employee like you or at least a friend?"

"Your art gallery has reliable employees. They wouldn't be there if they weren't since you were very careful about who was hired and who stayed. They have been taking care of the gallery for when you are ready to return," said Jerome.

"I want to go there," Veronica said, wanting to see what exactly she loved about it.

Jerome took out his phone. "I will get a car to take you there when you are ready."

Veronica turned around to face Jerome. "I will not drive? I mean, in my state I shouldn't but is it always like this with a driver?"

"It is,' Jerome nodded. "You are not just anyone. You are Veronica Sterling. You have to be with a guard near you when you leave."

"Right," Veronica replied, finding this all to be hard to get used to. "I know he is this bigshot businessman but I am still shocked that this is what I married into and I don't even know why I am shocked. The emotion is just there."

"You should look into his family. His father is on the business side while his mother's side dives into politics. Mr. Sterling only has interest in the business side which brings conflict from his mother's side," Jerome revealed.

To Jerome, Veronica needed to know this so she had a good idea of who else was targeting her.

"Is the conflict only because he doesn't want to get involved in politics?" Veronica asked.

"Most of it is. There is something about you. It wasn't until he proposed and you started to plan the wedding that his family knew about you. They don't think you fit in and most believe you are why he doesn't want to get involved in politics," Jerome revealed.

"So, there is a lot of blame on me instead of listening to what Liam wants. It would be better to blame me. That seems to be what everyone does. Thank you for the honest answers. I know it is my husband's doing but thank you," Veronica said and then turned around to continue to her office.

Jerome remained quiet. Part of him wanted to share that even though he worked for Liam he was grateful to Veronica which was why he would have given her answers when he had the chance. Like Liam, he awaited the moment she would go back to normal. He admired the couple and didn't like seeing them so shaken up.

When Veronica entered Liam's office her attention went straight to the large portrait of him and her placed at the back of his desk. It was one of them in wedding attire. Wasn't this too much for this room?

The office was tidy with many drawers and bookshelves filled with books she doubted he would ever be able to complete. There weren't any documents out in the open for her to go through those first.

"Time to get started," Veronica muttered.

She wasn't only here to look at her bank statements but also anything worth seeing.

Jerome remained by the door watching as Veronica searched everywhere but where the statements were. He helped oversee where everything went so she only needed to ask him but she appeared to be having fun reading what she discovered.

It was only when her smile fell and she looked in disbelief at what she read that he entered the room. Jerome tried to remember what he had placed in the drawer Veronica had opened.

"Divorce papers," Veronica said, turning the documents for Jerome to see.
