Goodness, I shouldn't be laughing… but I can't stop! Rose thought to herself, biting the inside of her cheek to keep her composure.
The sight of her step-grandmother being rushed into the ward earlier, pale and flustered, had been too much for her to handle. Serves her right! All those times she hurt me… Now look at her! I hope she gets a taste of her own medicine.
To the onlookers, Rose was a picture of tragic innocence. But in her mind, she was gleefully celebrating a tiny victory.
Her hands pressed harder against her face to cover the grin that refused to fade. Tears streamed down her cheeks—not from sadness but from laughing too much.
One nurse passing by even stopped for a moment, patting her gently on the head. "Sweetheart, it'll be okay," the nurse said softly.
Rose nodded dramatically, her shoulders shaking harder as she pretended to cry even louder. If only they knew!
