Lily sat perched on the edge of a velvet chair, her damp hair curling against her cheeks. Her hands trembled faintly, betraying the facade she tried to maintain.
Across the room, Kaden stood by the door, his broad frame casting a shadow. His blue eyes locked on her, sharp as though trying to decide whether to comfort her or berate her.
"You shouldn't have gone near Seraphina," Kaden said finally, his voice clipped. "You knew what would happen."
Lily's head snapped up, her eyes blazing. "Oh, don't you dare start with that."
"I thought I told you..," he bit out, crossing the room in long strides. "You were supposed to stay in the servants' quarters—out of her way. But you—"
"Excuse me?" she interrupted, standing abruptly. "I did exactly what I was told to do! I wasn't looking for a fight, Kaden. Seraphina came for me."
