Qianqian knew she had done something wrong and hung her head in silence.
Jiang Wei took a deep breath and straightened her clothes. As she turned around, she saw a sliver of the room door ajar, paused, and then pulled it open to step out.
The assistant director was startled to see Jiang Wei: "Jiang Wei, how come you arrived so early too?"
"Last night, I rushed to a notice out of town," Jiang Wei politely replied, "and after getting off the plane this morning, thinking about the promotional photo shoot, I headed straight here." She looked at Wen Qiao, "I didn't expect Wen Qiao to be so early either. How long have you been here?"
Wen Qiao knew what Jiang Wei wanted to ask and glanced at her lightly, saying nonchalantly, "Not too long."
Wen Qiao's ambiguous answer made Jiang Wei's heart even more flustered.
But asking any more would only raise suspicion.
Makeup and dressing always take the longest for actresses, and thinking about finishing early to wrap up for the day, and seeing the makeup artist had arrived, the assistant director called for Wen Qiao and Jiang Wei to get their makeup done first.
"Our male lead, Huo Cheng, is still on his way here. You two go ahead and start shooting."
"Wen Qiao, you see, it's like this. Since it was only decided today that you'd play the female lead, we didn't prepare a separate makeup room for you, so please bear with it and use the large makeup room up front with everyone else."
"It's okay, I'm not inconvenienced." Wen Qiao was tilting her head and fidgeting with her nails, thinking about getting a manicure after finishing up.
She didn't really care about having a separate makeup room, but thinking back to what she had just overheard, she pulled her leg back in and raised her chin, "Isn't there a separate makeup room here? I'll just use that one."
As soon as she spoke, everyone present fell silent for a few seconds.
Qianqian snapped out of it and angrily said, "Why should you? That makeup room was specifically prepared by the company for Sister Wei. Why should we give it to you?"
"It was specially prepared, huh." Wen Qiao seemed contemplative. Qianqian thought by saying so she would back off, but to her surprise, the next second, she heard her say, "Then I definitely need to use this makeup room."
"You…"
Wen Qiao cut Qianqian off with a slight smile curling at her lips, "After all, the things you fight for always taste sweeter."
Qianqian's face turned pale, and her retort was stifled back in her throat.
Wen Qiao scoffed inwardly, What a sly little person, only daring to speak ill of others behind their backs!
When Director Zhang received President Fu's call, the assistant director was right beside him. Director Zhang could afford to throw tantrums and not show up, but he couldn't dare such a thing, especially with Wen Qiao, the parachutist, requiring special attention.
But until today, there were rumors inside the company about the close relationship between Jiang Wei and President Fu—an old flame and a new lover—it was somewhat difficult to choose.
The assistant director waffled for a few seconds, unable to come to a decision, when he heard Jiang Wei say, "Then let Wen Qiao have my makeup room. I'll go to the main makeup room. It's been a long time since I've experienced the feeling of squeezing in with other actors anyway. Let's say I'm reliving my youth for the day."
"How nice."
Wen Qiao suddenly interjected with a feeling of appreciation.
Jiang Wei: "?"
"It's nothing, just an exclamation," Wen Qiao played with the tail of her ponytail with her fingers, winding the soft strands around and around, a picture of girlish charm, "I envy Sister Jiang Wei. After so many years in the industry, you have both the seniority and experience. Looking back, you have so many memories. Unlike me, I've just started."
Upon hearing this, the smile on Jiang Wei's face strained to stay.
She was discovered by a talent scout in her second year of high school, and now nearly a decade since her debut, naturally, her experience and seniority were something most people could not compare with.
