Kain woke up to an unsettling stillness, the faint glow of dawn filtering through the curtains. He reached out blindly to Viktor's side of the bed, only to feel cold sheets.
A frown tugged at his lips. Viktor was always cold, but the chill of the empty space felt different, like Viktor had been gone for some time.
Blinking the remnants of sleep from his eyes. Kain sat up and scanned the dimly lit room. A sense of unease settled over him. Viktor was always there when he woke up. This was the first time Kain had woken to an empty space, and it felt wrong.
"Viktor?" He called, his voice soft but laced with worry. There was no response.
His heart quickened. Viktor's enhanced senses should have picked up his voice no matter where he was in the mansion. Something wasn't right.
