There were humans about, so many humans, all walking or standing, talking, laughing, frowning. So varied, yet so similar in their segmentedness.
It stood still and watched it all, let the sounds and smells waft over it, through it. It was there, yet not really there and none of them, none of the humans, should have been able to seen it.
And yet she did.
She had been buying a bushel of apples from a vendor set up on the side of the street when she'd turned, her eyes looking out over the crossing as she bent backwards to offset the size of her belly. It had looked back at her, wondering at that swollen belly, wondering if it was normal or if the woman was ill, all the time thinking that she couldn't see it.
It had been wrong.
"Look out!"
She dropped her bags and rushed towards it, towards the oncoming traffic.
