"Well, hello there. Are you looking for the magic circle I mentioned?"
Rhodes turned toward the source of the voice, finding himself face-to-face with a group of five people—two men and three women—dressed as adventurers.
"Yes, I'm searching for some magic. Do you have any clues? If you help me, I'll make sure you're rewarded!"
The man leading the group exchanged glances with his teammates before responding, "No, no, we don't have any information about that. But you could try posting a request at the Adventurer's Guild."
He hesitated for a moment, then continued, "However, we're currently working on a mission ourselves. The reward is an epic skill for every profession—or magic, if you prefer."
Rhodes raised an eyebrow. "An epic skill? Is it customizable? Can I choose the magic property?"
One of the women in the group nodded enthusiastically. "I think so! The mission issuer is Prince Ledea, and their royal library supposedly has every kind of magic imaginable. You should find what you're looking for!"
Intrigued, Rhodes took the task list from the woman and examined it carefully.
"An epic mission. Recommended team size: 10 elite members or 3 epic-ranked individuals.
Mission objective: Capture a magic raccoon alive. No reward will be given if it is killed.
Reward: One epic skill or spell for every profession in the team."
Rhodes thought back to the magic raccoon, recalling its entry in the monster encyclopedia. It resembled a raccoon cat but had blue fur. Although not particularly strong, it was exceptionally quick, making it ideal for tracking. This magical beast could sniff out anything it was introduced to, making it incredibly useful.
"So, it's a highly valuable creature. But catching it alive? That doesn't sound easy," Rhodes mused aloud.
The group leader, after a moment of thought, replied, "We've already located a magic raccoon. As for capturing it, our plan is to use two magicians to immobilize it while the rest of us drive it toward you. You'll just need to contain it."
Rhodes nodded. "Alright, count me in." Before setting out, he purchased a wood manipulation spell from a nearby merchant, thinking it might come in handy later.
"Let's get to work," the leader said, rallying his team.
---
The group ventured into the dense Warcraft Forest, a quiet and eerie expanse. Rhodes walked leisurely in the middle of the group, his role as the team's magician earning him a position of protection. It was clear these adventurers were experienced; their movements and formation spoke of countless prior missions.
"It's just up ahead," the leader announced, pointing to a dirt slope.
At the top of the slope was a dark cave. A faint black mist trickled from its entrance, and the air around it was deathly still.
Rhodes' brow furrowed as he observed the scene. Something doesn't add up. These people seem experienced, so why can't I sense any monsters nearby?
Activating a spell he had learned from Ken Taili, Rhodes let magic illuminate his eyes. This allowed him to perceive magical energy in his surroundings, but even then, the area remained unnervingly silent.
"If these people aren't incompetent, there's only one explanation," he muttered under his breath.
The group leader and another man at the rear of the team exchanged cryptic glances. As they stepped away from the formation, their behavior turned suspicious.
"Alright," one of the girls asked nervously, "what's the plan now?"
The leader smirked. "Plan? There's nothing left to plan. It's up to you now."
Before anyone could react, the leader waved his hand. Figures began emerging from the forest, armed with knives and weapons coated in a sinister black liquid.
Rhodes narrowed his eyes. Real killers, unlike amateurs like Ma Xiao.
The sudden ambush revealed the true purpose of the mission. The five-person team had been a ruse, with two of them luring Rhodes and the others into a trap. The newcomers, numbering at least ten, encircled them, their faces alight with malice.
"Why... why are you doing this?" one of the adventurers stammered, fear etched across his face.
Before an answer came, an arrow flew through the air, piercing the man's arm.
"Ahhh!" he screamed as blood sprayed from the wound.
The leader laughed coldly. "What a bunch of pitiful fools! Did you think you could walk into our forest without paying the price? Consider this a lesson. And the cost? Your lives."
The killers closed in, their weapons gleaming. The remaining adventurers, terrified, began to tremble.
But Rhodes stood still, calm as ever. He watched the scene unfold, his mind racing to piece together the situation.
"No wonder I couldn't sense any monsters," he muttered, glancing at the would-be assassins. "You cleared the area to lure us in."
The leader sneered. "Sharp, aren't you? But if you figured it out, why didn't you warn your companions?"
Rhodes smirked. "Because I was curious to see how this would play out. It's not every day you meet such dedicated killers."
Before the conversation could continue, another arrow shot toward Rhodes. Without flinching, he raised a hand, and a metallic clang echoed as the arrow was deflected mid-air.
"Cang!"
