Chapter 1: Death and Rebirth

I've always been a genius. Top grades throughout my school years. I, Natsuki, am a third year high school student. I spend my time studying for college entrance exams and have limited my social life. I have a knack for computers and am hoping to work at a top tech firm. I wake up each day bright and early. After getting dressed, I grab a bite to eat, and head out the door. It's a 20 minute walk to school and it's a sunny spring morning. There's only a few months left before entrance exams so I've been cramming info into my head in order to pass. I don't hang out with friends or have much of a social circle anymore. My studies take up all my time.

Everyday is the same routine- wake up, school, cram school, then sleep. I attempt to fit in food when I can but sometimes I'm forgetful. The weekends are the only time I get to relax. I decided I wanted to go out and enjoy some karaoke as a way to relax after a long week. I put on a cute outfit and pair it with a set of fox ears and a tail. I don't go out much so when I do, I enjoy going all out I guess. I head to the train station to catch the last train before the evening rush starts. Once I arrive, I grab an iced coffee and find a bench to sit on while I wait. As I'm sitting there watching people rush by, I noticed a child playing near the edge of the platform. I looked around to see if I could see their parents nearby but before I could finish looking I heard the train whistle.

I frantically get to my feet and try rushing toward the child. I pushed my way through the crowd of people. I grabbed the child by the shirt and jerked him backwards as I fell onto the tracks. Before I could regain my footing, all I can remember seeing was the bright lights of the train and then nothing at all.

[System] "Immortal System activated!"

When I opened my eyes all I saw was this notification. I think to myself, am I dreaming? Last thing I remember was saving that little boy then getting hit by a train. I should be dead but how did I survive? I reached up to touch the notification and all I heard was a strange voice.

[System] "Immortal System Activated!"

"Who said that I exclaimed!"

[System] "Only you can hear me, young fox maiden."

"Where am I, what's this Immortal System thing, and why did you call me young fox maiden?"

[System] "This world is called Hexlia. It's filled with humans and beastkin alike. Humans and beastkin work together to preserve the peace of the world against the Feral Beasts. With the help of magical abilities the peace is secured but conflict is looming in the distance. You were reborn to this world as a young fox maiden and granted the Immortal System." 

Okay so I'm a fox girl who is immortal. Now I know I'm dead because this can't be real.

[System] "Would you like me to run a scan so you're aware of any abilities you may possess?"

"Yes please," I said.

[System] "Scanning…."

[System] "Abilities: Immortality, Genius Intellect."

"So I'm still a genius and I'm immortal. I can't beat that, I guess. Now what's with the young fox maiden comment?"

[System] "When you were brought to this world you were reborn as a Fox. You kept your previous gender so you're a female fox."

"Okay so I'm a female fox. Yeah that's not something out of an anime at all. So what am I supposed to do in this world?"

[System] "You were brought here as this world's savior. You can gain new magical abilities by watching others using your Genius Intellect or by reading Magical Tomes. No more information available at this time."

As I tried to take in everything that was happening I slowly got to my feet. I looked at my hands and feet and to my surprise they were still human looking. So what about my appearance, I thought. I started to run my fingers through my hair when I felt something furry. 

"Are these fox ears!"

[System] "I did say you were a young fox maiden."

"I get that but I didn't think I had fox ears!"

[System] "Don't forget the tail as well."

"Tail!"

I reached around to my lower back and sure enough I felt a long furry tail. Okay so I have fox ears and a fox tail. If this is a magical world with humans and beastkin I won't stand out like a sore thumb. I started to look around to assess my surroundings and all I see is a forest. I look down and luckily I'm wearing some form of clothing. My breasts are still the same size at 32B so I can assume I'm still 160cm tall. I only weighed 45kg in my previous life so I can assume that's the same too. I slowly walked over to a nearby tree, sat down at its base, and started to pass out. I can't manage to keep my eyes open any longer.

[System] "Current state- exhausted. Rest needed immediately."
