The morning sun filtered through the trees as Cael and Lina made their way down a narrow path, leading them to the edge of town. The air was crisp, and despite the weight of their mission, it almost felt like a normal day—a day that didn't have the shadow of endless repetition hanging over it.
For a moment, Cael wondered what life had been like before the loop. What was he doing that day before it all began? Who had he been? He glanced over at Lina, who was scanning the horizon with a tense look on her face. She seemed so sure of their next steps, so confident in her purpose. Yet, the more he learned about her, the more he realized how much of her past was still a mystery.
"Do you remember this place?" Cael asked as they passed an old stone marker near the outskirts.
Lina squinted at it, her fingers brushing lightly over the rough surface. "Vaguely. This path… I think I've been here before, but it feels like another lifetime." She turned to Cael, her eyes narrowing slightly. "I don't know why, but I feel like this is the right direction. Like we're getting closer to something."
Before Cael could respond, the sound of footsteps behind them caught his attention. He turned sharply, his hand instinctively going to his side, though he had nothing there for defense. Lina stiffened, her gaze immediately searching for the source.
Emerging from the trees was Nico—or Aaron, as he had introduced himself before. His tall, lean frame moved with casual grace, and his hands were raised in a gesture of peace. A friendly smile played across his lips, and his deep brown eyes sparkled with what looked like amusement.
"Easy there," he said with a laugh, stepping into full view. "You both look like you've seen a ghost."
"Maybe we have," Lina muttered under her breath, her posture still guarded. She shot a glance at Cael, warning him to stay alert.
Cael's mind raced as he took in the familiar face. "Nico? Aaron? What's going on with your name?"
Nico—or Aaron—raised an eyebrow, seemingly amused by Cael's confusion. "Ah, you remember the name I gave you, Cael. Interesting. I didn't expect you to catch on so quickly."
Cael's eyes narrowed. "How did you know I knew? We never discussed your name."
Nico shrugged, a playful grin spreading across his face. "I have my ways. You'd be surprised what you can learn when you've been around as long as I have." He stepped closer, his demeanor friendly but with an edge of something Cael couldn't quite place. "I've been keeping track of your progress, after all. It's not hard to notice when someone recognizes you."

It's not hard to notice when someone recognizes you."
Lina stepped forward, her eyes sharp. "So you've been watching us. Why? What's your game?"
Nico's smile faltered slightly, but he quickly recovered. "I'm here to help, not hinder. I've been guiding you in subtle ways, hoping you'd find the answers you need. But trust me, it's not always easy to do so while maintaining a low profile."
Cael crossed his arms, feeling a mix of frustration and curiosity. "You've been playing both sides, haven't you? Trying to figure out what we're capable of?"
Nico's expression grew serious. "I didn't mean to play games. The loop affects everyone differently, and I've had to adapt to survive. I gave different names to each of you for a reason. When I first met you, Cael, I needed to see if you were a threat. With Lina, I had to test if you'd trust me. Names matter in this place—they can alter perceptions and influence interactions."
Lina's eyes narrowed, still suspicious. "So, what's the point of all this? Why not just be straightforward from the start?"
Nico sighed, his demeanor softening. "Because every interaction, every name I use, affects how you perceive me. It's a matter of control. If I gave you all the information at once, you might have reacted differently. I needed to gauge your responses, understand how much you could handle."
He lowered his hands and shoved them into the pockets of his jacket, leaning against a nearby tree. "You two are really making progress, huh? I've been keeping an eye on you, and I have to say, I'm impressed. Most people in your situation wouldn't be so bold."
"Bold?" Cael asked, raising an eyebrow. "We're stuck in a loop where we die every day. I don't think bold is the word I'd use."
Nico chuckled, shaking his head. "Maybe not. But you're doing more than most. That's got to count for something, right?" His tone was light, even friendly, but there was an underlying edge to his words, as if he knew more than he was letting on.
Lina stepped forward, her eyes locking onto Nico's. "Why are you here? What do you want?"
Nico's smile didn't falter. "Can't a guy just check in on his friends?" he said, feigning innocence. "I mean, we're all in this together, aren't we?"
Lina didn't respond, and the tension in the air grew thicker.
Cael, however, was curious. This was the first time Nico had shown up without any tricks or cryptic behavior. He seemed… normal, almost too normal. "Why do you keep following us?" Cael asked, cutting through the silence. "Every time we get close to something, you appear. You say you're part of this, but what's your role in all of this?"
Nico's expression softened slightly, and he sighed, as if the question had touched a nerve. He pushed off the tree and approached them, his demeanor more serious now. "I'm not your enemy," he said, his voice lower. "I'm stuck here just like you. The difference is, I've been in this loop a lot longer."
Cael exchanged a glance with Lina, trying to read her reaction, but her face was unreadable.
"How long?" Cael asked cautiously.
Nico's smile faded. "Long enough that I've lost track of time. Long enough to know that if we're going to get out of this, we can't do it alone." He paused, as if weighing his next words carefully. "That's why I'm here. I've been trying to figure out how to break this loop, just like you two. But I can't do it by myself."
Lina's eyes narrowed. "So now you want to work together?"
"Is that so hard to believe?" Nico asked, his tone slightly teasing, though his expression remained serious. "Look, I get it—you don't trust me. But the truth is, I've been trying to help you in my own way. I've been nudging you toward the right clues, making sure you don't get stuck on dead ends. You think it's a coincidence you've been finding answers faster since Cael woke up?"
Cael felt a flicker of doubt. Could Nico have been helping them all along? The thought made him uneasy, but there was something about Nico's tone that suggested he wasn't lying.
"Why didn't you just come to us directly?" Cael asked, crossing his arms. "If you really want to help, why play games?"
Nico sighed again, his shoulders slumping slightly. "Because every time I've tried to work with someone before, it's ended badly. People in this loop… they don't trust each other. And for good reason. I didn't want to overwhelm you two. I figured you needed to find your own footing before I stepped in."
Lina didn't look convinced, and neither was Cael, but there was something undeniably human in the way Nico spoke now. He wasn't the cold, manipulative figure they had first encountered. He seemed tired—worn down by the endless cycle, just like them.
"Fine," Lina said slowly, her voice cautious. "Let's say we believe you. What's your plan? How do you propose we break the loop?"
Nico's face brightened, his trademark grin returning. "Well, that's the tricky part. I don't have all the answers yet, but I do know one thing: the loop isn't just a random occurrence. It's being controlled by something—or someone."
Cael's heart skipped a beat. "You think someone's behind this?"
"I don't think, I know," Nico replied, his tone darkening. "There are patterns in the loop—rules that someone had to put in place. And if we're going to break free, we need to find out who's pulling the strings."
Lina crossed her arms, still skeptical. "And how do we do that?"
Nico's grin widened. "We start by going back to the beginning. There's something you both missed—something that ties all of us to this loop. If we can figure out what it is, we'll be one step closer to breaking free."
Lina and Cael exchanged a glance. This was the first real lead they had gotten in days, and though neither of them fully trusted Nico, they couldn't afford to ignore his help.
"Okay," Cael said, his voice firm. "We're in. But if you try to double-cross us, we'll make sure you regret it."
Nico raised his hands in mock surrender, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Hey, I'm on your side. No need for threats. Trust me, you'll need all the help you can get."
As the three of them set off down the path, Cael couldn't shake the feeling that things were about to get a lot more complicated. Nico might be their ally for now, but whether or not he could be trusted was another story entirely.
