Chapter 231

"Can't find me, can you?" A voice crackled through her comms, cutting through the hiss of steam still leaking from the burst pipe.

"Wait," Morrigan clicked her tongue, ducking behind a fallen medical cart. "I know this voice. This is Xavier, right? One of Jean-Claude's lackeys?"

"Right hand, more precisely."

She scanned the room again. "I must admit, you are clever in hiding. How did you figure it out?"

"Oh, you mean your super hearing?" Xavier chuckled. "From Jean-Claude, your brother."

"Is that so?"

"Yeah, he told me these cloaking sheets won't work on you. So he gave me some advice about keeping my heart rate down to confuse you."

She slid along the wall, tracking every shadow. "Is that all he said?"

"No. He said you won't be able to detect me as long as my heartbeat doesn't rise. That's how you spot your prey, isn't it? The harder the beat, the better you'll spot them."
