Marcus, growing uncomfortable, finally began to stand, brushing dirt from his pants.
"You're far scarier than you let on."
The sudden remark made Marcus freeze mid-motion. He looked over his shoulder, noticing the subtle shift in Roof's demeanor.
Gone was the casual ease he often portrayed; his golden eyes were sharp, guarded, almost calculating.
"You fooled her good, didn't you?" Roof's voice was even, his smile faint but humorless.
Marcus frowned and pointed to his mouth, his typical response, reminding Roof of his supposed muteness.
"Ah yes, the mute act," Roof said, feigning amusement, though his tone suggested otherwise. "You're very convincing. I'll give you that."
