Instantly, James's expression turned pale, and his hand trembled. He was too shocked to process what he had just heard.
"My mother?" he repeated, fearing he hadn't heard her correctly or perhaps refusing to accept the truth.
Sophie nodded as she smiled bitterly.
As she noticed James's expression darkening, she continued, "Your mother appeared at my house two days before we registered our marriage. She offered me a large sum of money to leave you."
"She did that? How did she know your house?" James asked, confused. He remembered that no one in his family knew about Sophie.
"Yes. I don't know how she found my house, but I remember you were on a business trip then..." she explained.
James opened his mouth several times, trying to find the words to ask, but nothing came out. He still couldn't believe his mother would do something so horrible.
Sophie chuckled when she saw James still struggling to find the words to respond.
