Part 1: Unseen Layers
The cold night air hung heavy around them as Lin Feng, Liu Xinyue, and Zhao Yue made their way through the streets of Beijing, slipping away from the scene of the brutal fight. The encounter with Li Wei's bodyguards had shaken the women to their core. They had witnessed Lin move with speed and precision that defied all logic. Now, the eerie silence between them wasn't just from shock—it was from the growing mystery that surrounded Lin.
Zhao Yue, ever the strategist, kept stealing glances at him. She had known Lin for years, seen him navigate complex deals, yet never had she seen him fight like that. It wasn't just that he won the fight—it was how effortlessly he had done it, with movements that didn't belong to someone without martial arts training. Meanwhile, Liu Xinyue, a world-class hacker in her own right, had watched in stunned disbelief. Something about Lin had changed. Dramatically.
They walked in silence, each processing what they had seen.
Finally, Xinyue broke the tension, her voice low. "Lin, that fight... it wasn't just reflexes. You were ahead of them—like you knew what they were going to do before they did."
Lin's expression didn't change. He had already anticipated the questions, but he wasn't ready to reveal the full extent of the A.I. yet. "I've been... adapting," he said simply, choosing his words carefully. "I've learned a lot lately. Let's just say, I'm not who I used to be."
Xinyue opened her mouth to respond, but Lin's phone buzzed sharply, cutting her off. He pulled it out and glanced at the screen. A new message had just come in from the A.I., hidden in plain sight as an ordinary text.
"Hostile digital trace detected. Li Wei's network is actively monitoring for your location. I suggest countermeasures."
Lin's brow furrowed. Li Wei wasn't wasting any time—he had already deployed his hackers, likely tracking their movements through CCTV cameras, traffic systems, and personal devices. But Lin had the ultimate advantage now: the A.I. could outpace anything Li Wei could throw at him.
"Xinyue," Lin said, slipping his phone back into his pocket. "How fast can you disable any tracking attempts Li Wei's hackers might be using?"
She raised an eyebrow. "I can hack most systems in under ten minutes, maybe fifteen depending on their security layers."
Lin nodded, considering his options. He didn't have fifteen minutes. The A.I. could do this in seconds.
"Let me try something," he said quietly, stepping off the main street and pulling out his laptop. "Keep an eye out for anything suspicious."
Xinyue gave him a confused look, but didn't protest. She had never seen Lin initiate any kind of hacking attempt—he wasn't a hacker by trade, after all—but she had already been surprised by him once tonight. Now, as he opened his laptop and began typing with speed that seemed beyond his usual abilities, Xinyue watched closely, the doubt creeping back into her mind.
"What are you doing?" Zhao Yue asked, her voice low, leaning in slightly.
"I'm tracking them," Lin replied, his fingers moving rapidly over the keyboard, though he barely needed to. The A.I. had already begun running an advanced trace on Li Wei's hackers, infiltrating their system with ease.
Within seconds, Lin's laptop screen displayed lines of code scrolling rapidly, and a map popped up, showing the location of three active signals. They were all within Beijing, converging on Lin's last known position.
Xinyue's eyes widened as she saw the display. "Wait... how did you—"
"I've been learning," Lin said, cutting her off as he continued typing. "Li Wei has teams actively searching for us. But we're going to stop them before they get any closer."
In a normal scenario, it would take even the best hackers time to break through sophisticated tracking systems. But with the A.I.'s assistance, Lin was moving at a speed no human could match. The A.I. processed and dissected Li Wei's digital network with an efficiency that seemed impossible. Firewalls collapsed as the system infiltrated multiple layers of encryption. Within seconds, Lin had not only located the hackers, but he had also severed their connection to the tracking systems.
"Digital countermeasures deployed. Hostile tracking disabled. New surveillance routes established to redirect future tracking attempts," the A.I. reported calmly in his mind.
Lin hit one final key, and the screen blinked. The trace was wiped. They were invisible again.
Xinyue was staring at him now, her mouth slightly open in disbelief. "How the hell did you do that? Lin, that's not... I've never seen anyone hack that fast, not even me."
Zhao Yue, standing nearby, narrowed her eyes, her sharp mind quickly piecing together that something more was going on. "That was beyond just knowing how to hack, Lin. You outpaced one of the most aggressive networks in Beijing like it was nothing."
Lin straightened up, shutting his laptop with a quiet click. He could feel their eyes on him, both waiting for an explanation. But now wasn't the time to lay everything bare.
"I've been... working on some new skills," Lin said, his voice calm but firm. "I'll explain more later. For now, we need to stay a few steps ahead of Li Wei. He's not going to give up easily."
Xinyue looked like she wanted to ask more, but she stayed silent, clearly still processing what she had seen. Zhao Yue, always a strategist, seemed to be running the numbers in her head. Whatever Lin had done, it had left them both reeling—and even more curious.
Part 2: A Dangerous Advantage
As they moved deeper into the night, Lin felt the A.I. continuing to scan for threats. It was constantly adjusting his awareness, tracking surveillance cameras, nearby devices, and digital signals that could potentially be connected to Li Wei. The level of control the system offered him was terrifying, yet intoxicating. He was always one step ahead, always in control.
The power was overwhelming, but Lin knew he couldn't afford to let it slip away. Not now.
They eventually found refuge in a small, dimly lit café, away from the major streets. The place was mostly empty, the few patrons sitting in corners, lost in their own thoughts. Lin, Xinyue, and Zhao Yue sat at a booth near the back, their conversation quiet but intense.
"We're being hunted," Lin said, his voice low but steady. "Li Wei's network is more extensive than I thought. He's got teams of hackers working around the clock to track us."
Zhao Yue nodded, her expression serious. "He's not just after your company, Lin. He's after you personally. What exactly does he know?"
Lin hesitated for a moment. He couldn't tell them about the A.I., not yet. But he had to give them something. "He knows I've been developing something," Lin said, skirting the truth. "Something powerful. That's why he's targeting me."
"What kind of 'something'?" Xinyue asked, leaning forward. "Is it tech-related? Is it why you've been acting... different lately?"
Lin's eyes flicked to her, and he could see the worry in her gaze. She had always been able to read him, always able to sense when something was off. But now, Lin was a mystery even to her.
"It's not something I can talk about right now," Lin said carefully. "But trust me, I'm not the same as before. And that's why Li Wei sees me as a threat."
Xinyue frowned, clearly not satisfied with that answer. "Lin, you've always been smart—smarter than most people I know—but this is different. I've been in the hacking game a long time, and I've never seen someone move through a system like you just did. You're hiding something."
Lin sighed, knowing that the conversation was heading into dangerous territory. "I'm not hiding anything from you," he said softly, looking at both Xinyue and Zhao Yue. "But there are things I'm still figuring out. You have to trust me."
Zhao Yue crossed her arms, her sharp eyes locked on his. "I do trust you, Lin. But whatever's happening here, it's going to get worse before it gets better. Li Wei won't stop. If he knows you're developing something powerful, he's going to come after you with everything he's got."
Lin nodded. "I know. That's why I need both of you with me. We're going to turn the tables on him, but we need to do it strategically."
Xinyue, though still clearly puzzled by Lin's abilities, leaned back in her seat, exhaling slowly. "Alright. I'm with you, Lin. Whatever you need, I'll help."
Zhao Yue, after a brief pause, nodded as well. "We'll bring him down. But you need to be careful. Whatever advantage you have, don't let it go to your head."
Lin smiled faintly. "I won't."
Part 3: The Web Tightens
As the hours passed, Lin continued to rely on the A.I., using it to gather more information on Li Wei's operations. The system scoured through financial records, communications, and security networks, uncovering hidden deals and backdoor trades that even Zhao Yue couldn't access.
He relayed the information to Zhao Yue and Xinyue, but carefully omitted how he had obtained it. The women, though impressed, grew more suspicious with every new piece of data he provided. It was becoming harder for Lin to maintain the facade that he was just an ordinary man with a few extra skills. His ability to hack, strategize, and outthink Li Wei's network at every turn was beginning to seem... unnatural.
Zhao Yue was the first to voice her thoughts. "Lin, you've been one step ahead this entire time. It's like you're seeing the moves before they happen. How are you doing this?"
Lin paused, the weight of her words hanging in the air. He could feel the A.I. humming in his mind, its calm, precise presence guiding him through every decision. But he couldn't tell them that. Not yet.
"I've been preparing for this," Lin said, his voice measured. "I knew Li Wei was coming, so I made sure I was ready."
Xinyue narrowed her eyes, clearly unsatisfied with that answer. "You're not telling us everything, Lin. Something's changed. I've known you for years, and this... this isn't you."
Lin's gaze softened as he looked at both women. They were right—he wasn't the same. The A.I. had changed him, made him stronger, smarter, more capable. But it had also distanced him from the people he cared about.
"I promise," Lin said softly, "I'll explain everything soon. But right now, we need to focus on Li Wei. Once we deal with him, I'll tell you everything."
Zhao Yue and Xinyue exchanged a glance, their skepticism clear, but they nodded in agreement. For now, they would follow Lin's lead. But the mystery surrounding him was only deepening, and Lin knew that sooner or later, he would have to reveal the truth.
