The word hung in the air like a blade suspended mid-fall, its edge glinting with the promise of devastation.
Evelyn stood in Wyatt's jersey, rain falling outside the window she was in front of, her expression an unreadable mask of ice and shadow. Her gaze flicked between them, between Wyatt, his face twisted with fury, and Kayla, standing there with her fists clenched, her whole world crumbling beneath her feet.
Kayla swallowed, but her throat felt like sandpaper. "Evie, I—"
Evelyn's laugh was soft, but it wasn't amused. It was broken. Fractured at the edges, held together by something razor-thin.
